  • Dunebug baby!

    September 15, 2015 in Peru ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

A great fun morning. We caught our dune buggy early and drove out into the desert. On the way we got to pass another ancient ruin, old cemeteries disturbed by looters and old aqueducts, built 1,500 years ago and essential for life in the desert these are still used today!Read more

  • Quarry Trekking

    September 22, 2015 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Back tracking a little as I've not had a moment to collect scribble my thoughts for ages! Given my usual last minute booking classic Inca Trail permits were sold out for the next 8 months so I elected to take the alternative route. Another Inca Trail our route took us up high, with beautiful views in all directions every time you took another step. Up, up, up and up we went. But perhaps the highlight of the first day was when we were surprised with hot chocolate, popcorn and dairy milk once we reached our 3,900m campsite. That and our very competitive games of Uno.Read more

  • Trek

    September 23, 2015 in Peru ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

That same afternoon (sorry too many gorgeous photo opportunities for one post!) we elected to walk even higher to summit at 4,850. And the views were truly spectacular. No other word. It was so peaceful up there without a mother person in sight and nothing to hear bar our voices, the birds and the winds. Oh and after we managed to survive the super steep scramble down we walked along to a lovely Inca temple, celebrating Mount Verónica. This mountain was so named because no one could reach the summit (despite a great many attempts) Finally a German woman named Verónica showed up and sumitted no bother, embarrassing all the men.Read more

  • Homestay

    September 28, 2015 in Peru ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

We were quite relieved when our host parents turned up after being led to our host be a grumpy teenage boy. However after some bonding over cute animals, volleyball and terrible Spanglish we were all fast friends. It's a fantastically peaceful way of livingRead more

  • Oros Islands

    September 29, 2015 in Peru ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After saying goodbye to our surrogate mamas and papas we headed back to the lake to travel home to Puno, visiting the floating islands on the way. Once a refuge and home for hundreds of people, today it is a tourist trap (albeit a very pretty one). Their way of life is dying asthenia young people leave for high school and never returnRead more
