  • Sea Day #2

    6. januar 2025, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Today is a sea day again, and the ship is noticeably crowded. The weather is not cooperating today. We have heavy skies, rain, and large swells. The pool deck is wet, so we need to walk carefully.

The pools and hot tubs are closed. The jogging track is closed, so I figure the only way to exercise today is to try the gym. As expected, there is not a treadmill available anywhere. That leaves me with walking the stairs. There are 9 decks I can go up and down (I only make it 5 each way).

That will have to do. Next up is breakfast. I have gotten very used to having someone make my omelet to order. That with an English muffin and coffee to round it all out. I try to sit on the pool deck, but the pool is splashing everyone. I head into the Spinaker lounge and do some knitting.

They have a presentation on the food and beverage department as well as the housekeeping department. It's very interesting to listen to. All the food on board is loaded in Miami. They do not get any food from the islands.

After the lecture I get some lunch. I then go back to my cabin for some peace and quiet.

I meet up with the solo group again and have dinner in the Magenta restaurant. The Caesar salad and Cordon Bleu chicken was very nice.

I have an early morning tomorrow, so I head back to the cabin to pack my bag.

  • Ship Almost To Myself, Let's Explore

    5. januar 2025, Gulf of Mexico ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Today, we stopped in Grand Cayman. I'm sure it is a nice port, but I didn't see any excursion that piqued my interest. Apparently, the hit of the day was the turtles, according to my dinner mates. This port is what is known as a tender port. That means that you don't dock on land, you drop anchor off shore, and small tender boats come and get passengers and take them ashore. While this is efficient, it is also a little cumbersome. I thought I would stay on the ship today. The advantage of being on the ship when most are not, is that you can get any lounger you want by the pool. There is no hunt to find a table in the buffet, and it is quieter and more relaxing.

So, after doing my laps and having a nice fresh made omelet, I settled by the pool. Beside me was a lady with crutches and a leg brace. What a way to start a vacation. I started a conversation with Anna and found out she is from Tillsonburg, Ontario! It is a small town out by Simcoe area. I used to live in St. Williams, and I worked at the Home Hardware in Tillsonburg. Small world indeed. We chatted for a while marveling at the coincidence of being on the same ship. Then, it was time for a dip in the pool. The pool is a little cool and therefore empty. Yay! After doing my laps like a good girl, I got out to do some reading. Then another dip in the pool (it is a nice day and the sun is out), then a stint in the hot tub. After drying off a bit in the sun and listening to people say how cold it is (27C), I head in for lunch. Now I know that I haven't been adding any food pictures, but I will today. I usually have breakfast and lunch at the Bistro Cafe and then dinner in one of the main dining rooms. Lunch is a salad with grilled chicken and a cake for dessert.

After lunch, I go to explore the ship and get pictures for you. I was on the Norwegian Prima last year for the Fjord cruise. I was enamored by the light fixtures on board there, here not so much. While the atrium lighting is cool (it changes colours), the rest of the ship is pretty bland. That is not to say that it isn't absolutely spotless, but there is nothing really about the decor that stands out. The Grand Pacific dining room has some neat decor, but the rest of the ship is pleasant but not outstanding.

After an afternoon nap, I went to the solo gathering again. There seems to be more there every night. It is nice to see that people are interacting with others, and we have something in common. Those who know me would say I'm not a joiner, but this has been enjoyable. Stretching my boundaries is maybe a good thing. We head to dinner, and I have the Bang Bang Shrimp and Chicken with a cream of potato soup to start. Desert is a chocolate brownie. I haven't mentioned the food much because it seems a little lacking as well. The soup was luke warm, and the dinner was a little dry. The brownie was a dessert that definitely needed some ice cream. The service is also a little bit slow. You wait a long time between courses, and trying to get a glass of wine is hit or miss. The same is true with coffee or tea afterward. Nothing is offered but is served if asked for. I have been sitting next to a man from Denmark named Mons (that may be wrong but close enough). He is very quiet spoken but fascinating to talk to. He was in the textile business and then real estate. He worked in Germany and Denmark. He also likes to travel so we have plenty to talk about.

After dinner, I managed to lose money at the Casino. Then it is off to my cabin to write this up. Tomorrow is a sea day again, so we'll see what trouble I can get into.

  • First Sea Day

    4. januar 2025, Gulf of Mexico ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Last night, I went to the solo traveler's meet and greet. It was run by a lovely young lady named Macarena. She is from Argentina. There were about twenty-five people there. There were 3 Janes all spelled the same. What a coincidence! We played a get to know each other game, and I won a deck of cards and an NCL beach bag! They have a meet-up every night, and then they have a group reservation at one of the dinner places. You don't have to go to dinner together, but it allows you to sit with people. Some solo travelers have a tough time eating alone.

This morning, I went for a walk on the top level. They have a jogging track up there. Three laps are about 3000 steps. Then, some breakfast. After breakfast, I found a lounge chair near the pool. The weather is sunny and there is a nice breeze off the ocean. There is a younger man who is from Florida, and then a German couple also sits down. We converse about where we are from and then slide into a comfortable silence. This is the other benefit of travel but cruising in particular; you meet all different people from different countries who have come together for a single purpose. The Panama Canal has a huge draw worldwide, as is clear by how many people have told me this has been on their bucket list.
I had some lunch as the cafe, and then a nap was in order. After my nap, I did another three laps up top. Then I got ready for our social hour and dinner with the gang. This time we went to the Magenta restaurant. I did the shrimp fettuccine. Dinner was good with great conversation. We had a gentleman named Mons from Denmark, 4 from the US, and 1 Canadian.

It's time for bed, though. Tomorrow is Grand Cayman, but that is a story for another day.

  • Home For the Next 11 Days

    3. januar 2025, Panama ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Good morning, all. After a wonderful sleep at The Clinton hotel. I have a shower and head in search of coffee. I didn't realize when I booked, but one of my favourite restaurants called The News Cafe is just down the street. This is a lovely place on Ocean Blvd that has ordinary food at reasonable prices. I head down to get a coffee and a yogurt bowl for breakfast. After a quick trip to the beach (just to make sure it's still there, yep, it is.) I head back to wait for my car.

I'm trying something new this time by arriving at the cruise terminal by 11:00 AM. This worked out very well. Just walk right into the cruise terminal with no lines. There was a little wait to get on board (behind the exclusive members and Haven guests). However, by 11:30 AM I was sipping a Long Island Iced Tea in the library. The cabins were not ready until about 3:00 PM, but I had lunch another loaded iced tea and was quite comfortable. My room is classified as a partial ocean view with a life-boat mechanism outside my window. That is okay because I was only going for some natural light.

The room is very spacious, especially for one person. I had the beds separated to give a center walkway and make it easier to get in and out of bed. The bathroom is very nice with all the space I need. There is plenty of closet space (with lots of hangers!), plenty of drawers and shelves to put stuff away and keep the place neat. I'm on deck 8 forward, and so far, things seem nice and quiet. The one thing I love about cruising is that you can unpack once and visit various locations. I am off to a singles welcome get-together tonight and will let you know how that goes.

  • South Beach, Here I Come

    2. januar 2025, Canada ⋅ ⛅ -1 °C

It is a travelling day today. I'm up early to catch my ride to the airport at 3:30. My ride is on time at 4:45. The ride to the airport is uneventful. I had already checked in, and security was surprisingly painless. I used an app called MPC to get through border patrol.

I have purchased a Priority Pass membership, which gets me into lounges all over the world. The one at Terminal 1 in Toronto is my first experience. It did not make a good first impression either. The lounge is crowded, small with very tight walkways. I have carry-on luggage and have a tough time making my way through. The food was good. The service was okay. You can not make a reservation here ahead of time, and when I left, there was a lineup and wait list. I hope Miami will be better on the way back.

We board our small plane and jostled to find overhead space for luggage. The flight is just under 3 hours, so the economy seat will do.

My driver was there quickly but it took about an hour to get to the hotel. I'm staying at a small hotel on Washington named the Clinton Hotel. I'm about 3 blocks from the beach, which is a nice walk.

The room is clean and reasonably quiet. I have a small terrace that is private. This place has a bar, restaurants, and a quaint pool. (That means a tiny splash pool). This place is great for one or two nights. There are plenty of places to eat and you have the beach.

I head out to the beach...cause like it is Miami, and you must. It is a beautiful day, and the walk is welcomed after the flight.

I was up early, so a nap is in order. The bed is incredibly soft but surprisingly comfortable. Now that I'm refreshed, it is time to find some dinner. This led me to a Cuban restaurant on Washington and 10th called: Havana Vieja. https://havanavieja.com. When in South Beach, Cuban food is a treat. This place has a nice outdoor patio, and it is a beautiful night.

I have a dish that is called Ropa Vieja Grandma style. It is shredded beef in a tomato sauce served with rice and fried plantains. Accompanied by a Sangria and dinner is a success. It is a beautiful 24C outside with a gentle breeze. It is so nice to be in South Beach again. Yes, there are food pics.

  • Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

    6. juni 2024, Island ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

I'm up bright and early just before 6:00 AM. I shower, finish packing, and am downstairs by 7:00 AM. A last trip to Neros for my coffee and crossiant and I'm waiting for my car to the airport. I am flying out of Stansted airport, which is a 1.5-hour drive from Paddington. I'm not going to do that on the tube or rail with luggage. RHIP.

As I drive through London, a few notes. I don't know if it is my age or the fact that I have seen London before, but the shine has rubbed off this penny somewhat. The people are not quite as engaging or helpful as I remember. The driver for my car came into the lobby and announced it was the white car and then left. The lady at the desk brought my luggage out since my hands were occupied with my coffee and crossiant. I loaded the luggage I to the trunk and opened my own door to get in. I'm not royalty or a snob, but one would think that for 120.00£ maybe a little help would be nice. The ride to the airport is quiet, I guess not everyone is a morning person. I don't know if I have changed or London has, but it feels as though the romance is gone.

One thing I haven't seen or noticed is a petrol station. I'm realizing that as I drive to the airport.

On a more practical note. Since Canadian cell phone companies are ridiculously priced for travel packages, I use a company called Airalo. I bought 5G of data for around 25.00 US. It was for a Northern Europe package and covered many different countries. After using it for over 2 weeks, I still have just over 3G left. I have used it for all our on land connections for everything from email to banking to maps and more. The other thing I do is travel carry-on only. I'm too old to lug heavy suitcases. Lastly, for footware, I invested in a pair of Vessi shoes. They are a Canadian company on the West Coast. These have been great. They have good support, are waterproof, slip resistant, and lightweight. We have been in all kinds of weather, and they have held.up great. Check them out if you want. https://vessi.com.

I get to the airport with plenty of time. I get through security and find a restaurant for some breakfast. I don't think there is food on board. This is only a 2 hour flight to Iceland, from there I catch a 5 hour flight to Toronto. We board and push back from the gate 15 minutes late. It is a beautiful day to fly here, at least. I don't know the weather in Iceland. I have lucked out with having an aisle seat of three. The middle seat is empty! Yay! I am flying on Play Airlines. The seats are comfy enough, and there is plenty of room.

I had a good flight to Iceland. The flight was quiet and I had some extra room. I have spent a couple of hours in the Saga Lounge in Iceland prior to boarding to go to Toronto. We are boarding late, so I think it might be later getting in. Maybe we will get a good tail wind.

We landed at 7:20 PM. in Toronto. It was a nice flight with a nice dinner, wine , snacks and quiet. Then, of course, the lunacy called Toronto Airport. Customs kiosk that are self-serve. Customs agents that are chit chatting as you go through. Hand them a piece of paper and then leave. As always, I have a car hired to take me back home.

    It's been a 16-hour day for me.
    4 countries
    Over 16,000 kms

    Good night.

  • Last Day For Me

    5. juni 2024, England

Today is my last day in London. I have woken up to a beautiful sunny day. We had some rain late last night, but that is a thing of the past. I head down to Neros for a coffee and crossiant. I come back and start to sort my luggage out. I, unlike Kitten, am not buying another suitcase. I don't want to try and navigate a larger suitcase, and I certainly don't wish to check bags at the airport. I am taking two planes home, unlike Laura, who had a direct flight from London. Trusting two airlines with checked luggage is just pushing you luck now a days.

I leave and head to the park near my hotel. This one is called Kensington Gardens. What a beautiful day to get some shots of the waterfountains and the fowl. They have an old Rolls Royce that has been converted to a truck. Just past this are many fountains with birds.

I used to love shopping at Mark's and Spencer (we had one in Hamilton, Ontario). I am going to head down to the one on Oxford Street and see what they have. I hop on the tube and off I go. I get there and open the door, excited to find a dress to take home with me. I wander through the store and quickly realize that the M&S of the past is gone. Instead, they seem to have the same clothing as everywhere else. They used to have pieces that would stand the test of time, but now they have just disposable clothing. There are no lined wool skirts or jackets. No classic blazers. It's a little disappointing. I suppose that time really doesn't stand still.

Next up is St. Paul's Cathedral. A short tube ride, and I pop up near the cathedral. Built in 1765 and opened in 1710, it is on the site of a previous church. It has a height of 111 meters and is built in the baroque Renaissance style. I was missing a cathedral in the blog, so here you go. A splendid one at that. I didn't climb the 300+ stairs to the top of the dome, sorry. The inside has many crypts, one of which is the Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon.

Dinner tonight was at the Italian place across the street from the hotel. I had a marvelous carbonara and a Panna cotta for desert. Tonight I pack and tomorrow I leave.

  • On My Own Again

    4. juni 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Laura had to leave early this morning. Gone by 8:00 AM. It was absolutely hilarious watching her pack last night. We had to buy a larger suitcase for her since she had a successful day of shopping yesterday. I believe that this is normal since Laura and Nicole had to do the same thing in Greece a couple of years ago. Ah well, youth, what can I say. I don't think I laughed that hard in years. Laura is a determined little thing (no idea where that comes from) as she tried to squeeze one more thing into a suitcase. Laura did make it to the airport on time and with everything in tow.

I had a leasurely day to myself. I took a nice long shower, then went down to Nero's for an almond croissant and a latte. I head back to Collectif today because their outlet store is open. They have more clothes in my size. It was a disappointing trip as they didn't have anything I wanted. After that, I took myself down to the Victoria and Albert museum. This is free and open to the public. The displays range from architecture in Britian 1760-1900, design in gold, silver, ironwork sculpture, tapestries, medieval and renaissance Britin, To Buddhism, Japan Korea and more. An amazing way to while away the afternoon.

It is just interesting to walk around and see stuff. Check out the clock video. The imagination here is great!

I came back to the room for some quiet time. I haven't said much about where we are staying. It is called the Edward Hotel in Paddington. The room is small, maybe 4 meters by 3 meters. The bathroom is tiny (included in the 4 X 3 meters). There is one hanging closet (with 6 plastic hangers), no dresser or drawers of any kind. While it is functional, it is not luxurious by any means. Somewhat of a letdown after our cruise cabin. It is fairly close to the Underground, and there are many restaurants within walking distance. It is quiet at night and the staff are lovely. However, it was not a place where I would come back to again. You rely on pictures and reviews, but I'm wondering if they can be counted on anymore.

I had dinner at a noisy pub just down the street called The Bear. I had a burger and a glass of wine. The burger was delicious and just enough for tonight. This place is for the locals to come and get a pint and work through the worlds problems. I like visiting places like this to see everyday people. It allows you to get a vibe of where you are.

Tomorrow is my last full day here. We'll see what happens.

  • Laura's Last Day In London

    3. juni 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I actually slept well last night. That may have been the over 13,500 steps from yesterday! There is a wonderful barista down the street from our hotel named Nero. I head down there for a coffee and crossiant. Then I head over to the bank. The last time I was in the UK (10 long years ago), I had brought back some leftover currency. I brought it back with me this time to use. I tried to pay for our lunch yesterday, and they told me that the currency was not used anymore. So I went to the bank down the street to change it. The old paper notes and the 1 pound coin have been changed. Now my wallet is much lighter.

Today is Laura's last day in London, which means that we are shopping. We went a store called Collectif. They have new clothes but in the 1940's style. This is where Laura gets many of her dresses. We went shopping for me today. However, they don't have my size. They have an outlet store beside them, but they are closed today. I'll head back here tomorrow.

We then see the Spitalsfield Market. Sure, why not. There are plenty of stalls selling everything from leather goods to jewelry to clothing to food. We stop for some fish and chips and conrinue shopping. A few hours later, we head to Camden Market on Hawley Warf. More shopping is done here. Next on the list is the Camden Brewery. Is it considered elder abuse is Laura walks me over 15,000 steps? She didn't even water me!

We finally caught the tube back to our hotel and some well-deserved dinner. Wine is involved.

Laura had to pack up tonight. We had to buy another suitcase. It has been a jenga puzzle and hilarious to watch. Laura has to leave early tomorrow to go back to Canada. That leaves me with two more days to myself.

  • London's Next

    2. juni 2024, England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today is sad because we have to disembark the ship. Now, who's going to cook? Who's going to provide fresh towels and make my bed? Ah, the luxuries of cruising. We are all packed up and looking forward to London. We dock I Southampton, UK. It is a beautiful day in Southampton, I'm hoping for the same in London. We have to catch a train and then the tube to our hotel. Wish us luck!

We have breakfast and make it off the ship. I already have 2500 steps in at 9:00 AM. I hired a ride to get to the train station in Southampton. They use Bolt app over here. We get our tickets and the train arrives 15 minutes later. We take the train to London Waterloo and then we catch a Tube to Paddington. This is a 109 km or 68-mile trip. So that is a ship, a car, a train, and then an underground all before noon. I think I'm going to need a nap!

We found our hotel after navigating the rail and tube. Our room is quite small but it is London. That means you pay a fortune for a small room. However, we won't be in it for long. We drop our bags and head down to grab a bite to eat. There is a nice Italian restaurant across the street from our hotel. Yes, please! After dome food we head to the Tower of London. Laura must see the Crown jewels. We do the tour with a very nice Beefeater named Gary. He gave us a brief history of the tower, and then we went I to see the tower. There are 292 steps up ( and another 292 down) . There are many exhibits ranging from the horse statues to weaponry. After I kill myself in the tower, we head over to the Crown Jewels exhibit. When I was here 10 years ago, they had many more jewels on display. However, Laura got her fill of bling. (She snuck through twice)

We head back to Paddington and find a Mexican restaurant called Wahaca.

  • Brugge - Last Full Day

    1. juni 2024, Belgien ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today is a gloomy, windy day out, with a temperature of 14 C. I am signed up for a 1.5-hour walking tour with a 30-minute canal boat ride. They call it the Romantic Brugge tour. Not unless I can find someone with a lot of body heat to snuggle up to! Laura is not feeling well, so I'm going solo.

Brugge is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The population is 19,000 and is surrounded by a water ring. There are many canals that work their through the city.

Our tour was marvelous, with many of the buildings explained. Brugge is known as the Venice of the North. Another influence in Brugges was the French. This is a very international city.

We did a walking tour first and then a boat tour. We had some spare time to eat and shop. I did find some gluten-free chocolate.

Tonight, we pack because tomorrow we disembark and head to London.

  • Amsterdam Is But A Dream

    31. maj–1. jun. 2024, Belgien ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

We were supposed to be sailing into Amsterdam today. However, the weather is not behaving. We have to go through a lock, and the weather is too rough. Hence, we move on. Laura was soooo looking forward to Amsterdam. Amsterdam has legalized marijuana. Laura has been pot free since we left Canada. Needless to say, she was like a two year with her blankie in the dryer during the announcement (leg kicks and everything). The Captain arranged for an overnight stay in Brugges. We are going to be dockong around 2:30 PM, and we have no curfew tonight.

Laura and I have lunch at a new restaurant today called Indulge. This is a group of street food carts that you can order from. You have tapas, Thai food, Shwarma, Coco deserts, etc. Laura had pre-ordered Pad Thai, and I ordered a noodle salad. I also got the goat cheese and apple tapas. Desert was, of course, a chocolate éclair.

We dock around 3:00 PM and get off the ship at 4:00 PM. We are in a small town, and we have to figure out how to get to Brugge. After checking out a church, we follow the crowd to the local Spar and get a train/bus ticket. We wait for the train into Blankenberge and then catch a bus into Brugge.

We made it into town and to the old city center. Unfortunately, most of the stores are closed. We can still walk the streets and see the amazing architecture. The trek back took about an hour and 20 minutes. We made it back just in time for dinner.

Dinner was the usual wonderful fare of potato and cheese soup, turkey with gnocchi, and some mango cake for desert. Wine was included as well.

  • Last Day At Sea

    30. maj 2024, North Sea ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today is our second day at sea. Laura had a late night, so I let her sleep. I head down for breakfast and then find a spot to look out the window at the north sea. I then start a new pair of socks. I got so e new needles and wool in Alesund.

Today, they are doing a pre-immigration for when we dusembark on Southampton, UK. It is a great way to do customs check on board instead of trying g to process 3000 people when we dock. I've never done this before, so we will see how easy it is.

Today, the weather is overcast with periods of rain. It may be an inside day of reading knitting and getting more shots of the ship.

We have a slow day, and there is nothing wrong with that. Constantly being on the go gets a little tiring. We have a nice dinner tonight. I hit the casino to lose some money and then head back for some sleep.

  • Happy Birthday To Me

    29. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today is my 63rd birthday. This is how I like to celebrate, somewhere different. I have Laura with me this year. Last year was the East Coast of Canada. Today, we are in Bergen, our last port in Norway. Bergen is a burning metropolis compared to our previous ports. We don't have a tour booked today. We are just going to 'wing it'. So out of my comfort zone.

The weather is rainy when I wake up, but it is starting to clear. Apparently, Bergen has over 200 days of rain a year. We are fortunate that the rain has stopped.

When we get off the ship, we get tickets for the hop-on hop-off bus. This will take us everywhere we want to go. We hop off first at a park by the university. It is a beautiful place area. The trees and flowers are all in bloom down this far. As we walk in, there is a pond with ducks and a water fountain. There is a little bridge to walk over the water to get to the main part of the park. The lilac bushes are still blooming here, so I can bury my nose in for a good sniff! We follow a path to another section where it opens up to a large fountain with kids run I g and playing. It looks like a school class is having lunch here. There are also other families with their children and older adults enjoying the beautiful day. The sun is out now, and we have shed our jackets.

We catch the bus again and head to the fish market. The one here is not the chaotic crowded wharf type that I have seen in other countries. This on is in a nice building and has more of a farmers market type feel. There are plenty of fish and other things from the sea to buy. They even have sea urchins that you apparently slice open clean and eat some part that is like caviar. Um, no, thank you.

Next up is the funicular up to the mountain top. At the top, we can see a large portion of Bergen and the cruise port. Yep, the ship is still here. The day has turned out great and we can get some really nice pictures.

Back down the mountain, we waited for the bus again to get us back to the ship. We have a short day in port today and have to be back on board by 4:30 PM. I'm starting to get nervous because the bus is taking g a really long time. We do make it back with 10 minutes to spare.

Tonight, we have booked the Onda restaurant for dinner. It is the Italian restaurant tucked away in the corner of the ship. In all honesty, it wasn't that great. We both had the salmon, and the portions were large but nothing special. Laura did, however, plan for a birthday cake, and the staff did sing Happy Birthday to me. This is a nice ending to the day.

  • Another Day, Another Town

    28. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We wake up in Alesund today. This is a much bigger city, with a population of 67,000 people. It's much bigger than Geiranger. The port looks a little more industrial than the scenery we have seen the past few ports. This port is actually at the entrance of the Geirngerfjord, where we were yesterday. There are many shops within walking distance that we take in after our tour. Alesund is actually made up of 3 different islands connected by bridges.

Today we are going to an ocean park. Our tour starts with a drive-through town. There was a fire in 1904 that devastated a large part of town. It started in a fish factory and spread quickly since the buildings were made of wood. After this time, all the buildings had to be made of stone or cement. There are beautiful views from everywhere and i can't image a house without a view of the mountains or water. Spring is in full bloom here, with many colourful flowers and trees. The buildings are interesting with their norse emblems and facades. Many of the buildings have the date of when they were built up on the top. We see more of this when we walk through the town. The ocean park doesn't disappoint. They have many natural tanks of various fish and crustaceans inside the main building. Outside, they have two areas; one large one for the seals and a smaller one for the otters. The day is a little overcast, making it hard to get good pictures, but I try.

Back in town, we are left to walk around on our own. There are many shops that catch our eye. One of which is an antique store. The owner is very nice and speaks very fluent English. (Thank goodness because my Norweigian is definitely lacking!) He has many little spoon collections and jewelery from the past. The best part was the paintings. His father was a painter, and he showed us how his and other painters used a technique that changed the painting with lighting. If you look at the painting in full light, it is a nice landscape, but when the light is lowered, the painting seems to have a light coming from within. It was amazing! This is why I like to travel because you discover things in the real world that books can describe, but experiencing them is so much better.

We walk farther into town and check out the buildings and winding streets. When we boarded the ship, my wooden knitting needles were broken in the luggage. This, of course, means that the socks that I was knitting had to be put on hold. Today, however, I found a wool store! They didn't have the same size needles, but I did manage to pick up some more needles and wool to start another pair. After this, I leave Laura to her shopping and make it back to the ship. My poor little feet aren't as young as hers.

  • Geiranger, The World UNESCO Fjord

    27. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I wake to see mountains outside my window. These ones are green with vegetation and terns flying through the sky. It is milder here as well. Geiranger is a small town at the end of the Fjord with a population of 200. Yes, 200 people, no typo. This is a very long fjord. It is 15 km (9.3 mi) long and 1.5 km (0.93 mi) wide. There are several fjords that branch off of it and Geiranger. The mountains are high at 800 meters, and the average depth is 260 meters. There are waterfalls everywhere you look. The mountains are lush with trees, and it is just beautiful to look at. Every now and then, there are houses and farms up on a slope. I have no idea how they get in and out because I don't see any roads. We finally make it to the town of Geiranger. It is at the very end of the fjord and is rather small. There is a hotel, grocery store with a post office, several tourist shops and restaurants, as well as plenty of tourism activities. An interesting thing to note here is that this fjord will be closed to all vessels that are not zero carbon in the future. They have an expandable dock here that unfolds to meet the ship after the ship has moored to the floating bouys.

Today, we are doing the ride up the mountain to the sky walk. The mountain is called Dalsnibba Mountain, and it is 1,476 meters high. Our guide is very enthusiastic about the area and points out many interesting things. It seems that everywhere we turn, there is another waterfall coming down the mountain side. The sounds of the water pounding down in torrents are deafening. Our guide has told us that we are very fortunate because we have hit the perfect time for the snow melt. Another week or two, and the waterfalls will be nothing more than a trickle. We make our first stop at a scenic point, where we can get pictures of the fjord and the ship. It gives you a good perspective of how high the mountain walls are that enclose the fjord. We then keep climbing up. We see plateaus where people have set up farms for sheep and goats. We climb higher until we reach the tree line at about 1000 meters. After this there are no more trees and just mosses on the ground. There is a lake that is still mostly frozen up here. Our guide said another 2 weeks, and it should thaw. We finally make it to the top. There is still snow up here, and the mountains are barren rock and snow. The view is amazing from up here. On our way down, we stop at a cultural museum to see the fjord in all four seasons and see how people lived back in the day. Not for the faint-hearted.

There are two waterfalls that are famous in this Fjord. One is called the 'Seven Sisters' and the one opposite it is 'The Suitor'. On our way out of the fjord, the Captain stopped and did a 360 with the ship to let everyone get pictures of both. Isn't he a nice man?

Back down the mountain, we have to head back for another delicious meal.

  • Day At Sea

    26. maj 2024, Norwegian Sea ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

I have had a stomach bug for the last few days. Today is the day that I cave and head to medical. It's a good thing that it is a sea day and I can lounge around the room. I head down there, and the doctor gives me a once over. Tells me I'm grounded for 24 hours from the last bout loose bowels. That was last night at 8:00 PM. I take the pills and electrolytes and head back to my room. Laura went down for breakfast, but I'm not very hungry.

We had a tour booked for 'behind the scenes' of the ship. This takes you through the laundry, kitchens, the back of the theatre, the I95 (main through fare for all things crew related), and the bridge. I had to bail on this one since I was grounded, but Laura had a good time.

I have had some room service delivered (dry toast and grilled chicken with jello, not even picture worthy). Thank goodness I have a balcony. We have been going in and out of fog banks, but the sound of the ocean is soothing. I take a nap and am feeling a little better. I haven't had any episodes, so I'm freed by 8:00 PM.

I have wondered around the ship a bit. I'm thoroughly enamored with the light fixtures on board. They are so intricate and just beautiful. The ship is very light and airy. I have tried to take pictures when a loung is closed so that I can capture the way it actually looks while being sensitive to peoples privacy. I'm probably going to bore you with pictures of light fixtures, but you can skip through those.

I also haven't written about the food on board. The thing I like about this ship is that you can eat whenever you like. There are six dining areas open at various times of the day. You are not pinned down to one place for lunch or breakfast. They have the buffet, but since Laura is celiac, we eat in the dining rooms. Laura pre-orders her meals the day before, and then the chef has a heads up of what needs to be cooked. They have made her a very happy foodie. They have pancakes, waffles, toast, eggs benedict, hamburgs, and so much more. Laura's meal every night looks scrumptious. Seeing the smile on her face while she eats is worth a thousand thank yous to the staff. The ship is obviously clean as a whistle, and there is no wear and tear of any of the finishes. I'll post some pictures of the lounges that are dotted around the ship.

  • Santa's Here

    25. maj 2024, Island ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

This morning, we get to sleep in. We have a tour in the afternoon. We have breakfast in the Hudson today. Laura can get a gluten-free meal prepared just for her. Today is bacon, eggs, breakfast potatoes, and toast. They have a system here where you can order your specialty meals the day before so the chef has some warning of what to prepare. Laura is quite happy that she can have basically whatever she wants gluten-free and cooked to perfection. I think she ordered Eggs Benedict for tomorrow. So we have breakfast and head back to the room to finish booking our excursions for the trip.

Today, we are in Akureyri. Akureyri is a large town with a population of 20,000. That is huge for Iceland. They have all the modern amenities from outdoor swimming pools (geothermally heated) to hospital, police, high school, and university. A booming place! The sun is shining and it is really warm out, 17 celcius. We head off at noon for a trip to a botanical garden, Santa's house, and a local museum. Spring has not really sprung here yet, so there are not many flowers out. Apparently, this garden was started by some of the local ariticratic women back in the 1950s. It was later taken over by the town. It is a nice walk, and many locals are here getting some sun. Next up is the highlight of the tour. It is a little Santa Village created by one of the locals. It has three little stores with everything from candy apples, sweets, cookies, and Christmas ornaments to tea towels, homemade soaps, jams, and knit wear. They have done a wonderful job in creating the area, and their products are very nice. After a few purchases, we head on to the museum. Here, we learn a little about the settlers of the area and how they lived. They started off in peat houses and then moved to wood houses. After a few fires, they were outlawed, and all houses were made from cement after that. The houses are heated geothermally. They have large pipelines that run along the side of the road carrying hot water from holes that they drill into towns. Genius! If their homes can't be heated by geothermal methods, then they have electric heat, which is created by waterfalls all over the island.

We head back to the ship in time to leave by 4 PM. The sun never really sets here, so when we leave, we the sun is still shining on the mountains.

  • Let's Go See Some Foxes...

    24. maj 2024, Island ⋅ 🌧 3 °C

Today is our first port. We have arrived in Isafjordur in the north of Iceland. This small town (which is the largest in the north) has a population of 2,700 people. Yes, this is the largest town up here. It has a police force, hospital, university, and apparently the only grocery store in the north. We woke up this morning to find us gliding through the fjord on our way to the dock. We are the only ship in town today. Today, we head up for a very rushed breakfast and then down to the theater to catch our tour. We are heading out to see an avalanche site and artic foxes with some local music at a stolen church thrown in.

First was the memorial to the avalanche victims in Sudavik. On January 16, 1995, an avalanche hit the town at 6:00 AM, killing 14 people, 8 of which were children. They have built a memorial to this disaster. The town only holds 200 people, so losing 14 residents would have been devastating. You can actually see the path where the avalanche came through when you look towards the water and see the spaces between the buildings.

Our next stop was a church that was actually stolen from another town. One of the remote towns was gifted a church by Norway. This other town was shut down because it was too remote. The church leaders decided to move the little church to another town instead of building a new one. Here, we heard a nice gentleman give us a quick description of the church and how they barged it down the fjord to it's current spot. He then gave us a little concert in his native Icelandic language. He was quite good and the music was very enjoyable.

Our last stop was the Artic Fox rescue center. Here, they help injured foxes and release them back into the wild . They have two foxes that are permanent residents. They were hand raised from babies and can not be released back into the wild. Since today was a rainy day, the foxes didn't want to come out of their den. However, the lady from the center brought out some dried fish, and one fox (Fryda) decided it was worth braving the rain. They are small and normally shy in the wild. They are also capable of killing a sheep. This is why they were hunted in the past by the farmers here in Iceland.

Our ride back to the ship is quick, and we board with no problems. Laura and I headed up to the Hudson for a late lunch. They staff here are absolutely amazing in handling Laura's food allergies. Laura was able to get a cheeseburger and fries specially prepared by the chef for her requirements. I did the Italian wedding soup and Cobb salad. We both came back for a nap so we can prepare for tonights escapades.

  • Today is Boarding Day

    23. maj 2024, Greenland Sea ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

This morning has started slow for me, I have a bad headache, and my stomach is not behaving. I'm not sure if I picked up a bug on the airplane/airport or something I ate. Laura is on her own for todays adventures. This is not a problem for Laura, who likes to shop and browse. I haven't mentioned much about our hotel but I will now. We have stayed at the Midtown Hotel. It is very centrally located to all the touristy stuff. The room is very clean and bright. However, this is a self check-in hotel. That means that you get a code the day before for use while you are there. This is much easier for travelers who come at odd hours and have to check out at night, I guess. All communications are done by e-mail or through the Booking app. I do prefer to have a real person to talk to. There is no one at the front desk to ask for restaurant suggestions, etc. Communicating through e-mail is not timely and impersonal. I needed to get late check out because I wasn't feeling good, so trying to negotiate this over email was tedious. They also charged an arm and a leg between the early check-in and late check out.

We finally got to go to the ship to board. The weather is overcast but not railing yet. The ship is huge! So is the line to get in. We did book a time slot for boarding, but I don't think it made a difference. I think next time I will board later around 3 pm. We are boarding the Norweigian Prima. It is a new ship in NCL's newest class of ship.. It has 18 floors, with a water slide that goes over the side of the ship and then comes back in. Other than waiting in line for security, our boarding goes off nicely. You enter the atrium and are greeted with elagance and subdued sofistication. The colours are shades of creams and beige. The lighting is in gold metal in different patterns. Our room is on the 15th floor, closer to the front of the ship. We have a balcony so that we can see the fjords as we come in and out. This type of trip where the scenery is the destination means that you just have to have a balcony to enjoy the views. Our cabin is very spacious with more than enough storage. It is always amazing how these ships can pack so much into so little. We grab something to eat up on deck 17. The weather has turned a bit and we now have a light rain. We then head back to our cabin to see if our luggage has arrived. We unpack and gather ourselves before heading out for dinner.

We have dinner in The Commodore restaurant for dinner. Laura has celiac disease (no wheat, rye, or barley), so it is safer for her to eat in restaurants as opposed to the buffets where cross contamination can occur. I had the French onion soup with the talapia. Laura had the ceasar salad and roast chicken. Both were delicious. Afterward, I headed back to the cabin to make it an early night. While Laura headed down to the main atrium for some music. We have a tour tomorrow morning, so it is off to bed for me.

  • A Day At The Spa

    22. maj 2024, Island ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

This morning, we had crepes at a nice little restaurant. Then we went shopping. They have a Christmas store here, so we just had to check that out. They had so many cute things in there, and they ship to Canada. Yes, please! This way, we don"t have to worry about ornaments breaking or taking up luggage space.

We had an appointment with the spa at the Sky Lagoon (https://www.skylagoon.com/) A marvelous way to while away 3 or 4 hours. We had the The Ritual. First off, you go in and have a shower and change into your bathing suits. Then you wallow (no other word) around in geothermal heated fresh water. No sulfur smell or effects. Just warm water with an infinity edge that overlooks the bay. We met some cool ladies from the states Donna and Patty. They are going to be on our cruise as well. We just make friends anywhere we go! We talked with them for a while and enjoyed the warm soothing water. Then you plunge into a cold pool next. if you're Laura, you walk down the steps and walk right back up. I think explisives were involved as well. Then you go into a dry sauna. This sauna has an entire wall of glass overlooking the bay as well. It was quite warm so we only lasted 5 - 7 minutes. Then you have a cool mist shower (Laura, not a fan of this either) before heading into the steam sauna. They give you a salt and almond scrub prior to entering the steam shower. This was more brutal than the dry sauna because the steam made it difficult to breathe and very hot. The next step is to shower off and go back to the warm pool for as long as you like. Our new kept following us and we had a very enjoyable time. We even ended up sharing a cab back into the city.

I'm a bit jet lagged, so I have stayed back at the hotel while Laura has gone off to visit the Penis Museum. Yes, you read that right.

Laura learned a lot about penis today at the museum. She learned the difference between human and other species penis. The hamster has the smalles, and the largest is the sperms whale.

We had another wonderful meal. Laura went to a bar, and I came back to write this.

Tomorrow is our last day in Reykjavik, and tomorrow we board the ship.

  • Another Birthday, 4 Different Countries

    21.–23. maj 2024, Island ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

We have begun our trip. Our limo picked us up at my place. It was a nice Lexus with plenty of leg room. We had some light rain on the way to the airport but we should be good for take off. This is an overnight flight; we are taking off at 11 PM and arriving at 8 AM Icelandic time. We are flying Icelandair for the first time. We are flying Premium Saga class. This sort of a cross between premium economy and business class. The flight is only 5 hours but we have a 4 hour time change.

We made it to the airport and through security pretty quickly. I'm impressed. Next up is the lounge. We have access to the Premium Plaza lounge in Toronto. I have never been to this one. It is very busy but nice. The food is good but not overly special. Laura is celiac, and we did find something for her to eat.

The boarding process was painless. Our seats are wonderful. They are 20" wide and will recline 40°. We had an amenities bag, a pillow, and a nice blanket waiting for us on our seats. We took off on time, and the flight time is 4 hours and 55 minutes. They started me off with si e crispy bread and a nice sparkling rose from Endland. Oh, and you know you're in Saga class when you actually get real glasses and not plastic. The drive ks menu has a Gin library. Yeah 7 different types of gin. I'm not a gin drinker, but I guess I could learn.

I chose the lamb for dinner. That was marvelous. Kudos to Icelandair. The lamb was tender and flavourful. The gravy was rich and tasty, the chocolate mousse and cake divine. Unfortunately, Laura was not impressed with her gluten-free offering. It was bland and just not delicious. Well, time for a nap...I hope.

Kitten slept on the plane, but I didn't. We land and head to customs. Through customs in 5 minutes. Then we catch the Fly Bus into Reykjavik. It is about 40 minutes from the airport. This is a good way to check out the landscape. The landscape here looks very barren. There are not many trees, and the ground looks like volcanic rock.

We get to the central bus station where you catch another bus to the different parts of the city. Reykjavik is the largest city in Iceland. It looks like your typical European city so far. Modern with good roads. Our driver is a very pleasant young man and he lets us know where to get off. There are a few apps that I always travel with on my phone. One of them is Google Maps. We plug in our address and Laura navigates us to our hotel. The streets are narrow and uphill (typical Europe, although Iceland is pretty flat!). We are only about 6 blocks from where are bus let us off. The streets are lined with shops and Laura's eyes are bright!

The hotel is the Midtown Hotel. As with everything these days, it is a self check in place. Our codes work, and we get to our room. It is clean and bright with twin beds. (I had enough of sleeping with Laura when she was small!) It has everything we need for a couple of days. I take a nap, and Laura goes out to explore (aka shop).

We start out walking g down towards the water. There are sooo many shops to check out. There is a lot of Icelanic knit sweaters, hats, etc. Along with sheep rugs, typical tourist stuff. There are many jewelry stores as well that feature volcanic stone. There are many artisan stores with uniquely designed jewelry. We walk all the way down to a harbour area. It looks like a place to get tour boats as well as fishing boats.

We stop at a place by the water to get some baked chard and vegies. (Yes, there are food shots) Then we make our way back to the hotel.

The natural beauty of Iceland comes through with every corner that you turn . All of a sudden there is a street with a backdrop of mountains in behind. Another thing to note is that we don't have sunset until 11 PM here, and apparently, sunrise is going to be around 4 AM. Our sleep may be a little messed up.

  • I'll Be Back

    5. februar 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The last morning on board. I was up at 5:30 AM. Finished packing, returned the extension cord, and left our rooms for the last time. We went up to the buffet for some much-needed coffee. Since we have kept our luggage, we can get off whenever we want to.

We have a coffee or two and then start on breakfast. I have confirmed our car for the morning, so it looks like we are all set.

Disembarkation goes as smoothly as embarkation. It has just started to rain a bit here in Miami, hopefully we can find our car easily. Yep, there he is! A nice black suburban all for us. Off we go to the airport. Traffic looks terrible, but Arnie, our driver, says one-half an hour. He is right.

    Hopefully, the airport is good.

Yeah, the airport sucks! We get here at 10 AM and don't get through security until 11:30! Then we trek to our gate and get there at 12 noon. We settled in for a couple of hours waiting to board. We grabbed some sandwiches for the plane. Boarding is called, and we get on board.

We make it to our seats, store our luggage, and sit down. We have 3 children about 3 - 7 years old. The parents sit across the aisle with a 6-month old who is not happy. You know that high-pitched squeal? The flight is 2 hours and 44 minutes. As we taxi away from the terminal, the pilot says that flights are grounded due to weather. They are trying to reroute us, and we will be delayed for a bit. Finally, at 2:42, we are up. Only 45 minutes late.

We're in the air, and we stay in the air, yeah! The kids in front of us are typical misbehaving kids. The baby screams, one torments the other. The parents don't have control. Seat belts are optional in that row as well. Why do people think that it is okay for other people to be inconvenienced by their kids? It is going to be a long flight. We picked up some sandwiches and cake from the terminal and had those on the way home.

Once home, we have to go through customs. In Toronto, which means using a machine to declare. Then we show the receipt not once, not twice but three different times as you make your way through to the exit. Talk about government redundancy! Once through customs, we then have to walk another kilometer to get to our door for the car we hired to pick us up. Apparently, Pearson Airport will only allow pickup at one door, which is the farthest from where you exit customs. Ken and Gabi are toast by this time, and I'm fuming.

The ride home is okay. The driver has to slam in the brakes hard a couple of times, which scares the daylights out of me. Finally, I'm home safe and sound. In the quiet. Where's the scotch?

  • Last Full Day On Board

    4. februar 2024, Bahamas ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

This is our last full day on board. I think everyone had a good time. Freeport is more an industrial port. Not as pretty as Nassau. The weather is threatening to rain, but we are staying on board again. The temp is about 70 F or 23 C. There are some port shops, but they are mostly just clothing and restaurants. No beaches here to walk to.

I have managed to get us a car to the airport tomorrow. Haven't been able to get our boarding passes yet, though.

Ken and I do our usual hot tub routine. Then we headed in for some lunch. The buffet has been quite good. The food is varied, hot/cold, visually appealing, and very tasty. I can't fault the food on board. The decor is a little dated but clean. The bathrooms are always clean and well stocked. The communal areas are clean and sparkling. My cabin has been very well looked after by Luis and his crew.

I finally got our boarding passes, thank goodness. I have a car picking us up at the cruise terminal tomorrow, so I'm hoping things end better than how they started. We head back and pack up our stuff for tomorrow.

We head down for a drink in the smoking lounge before dinner. Dinner was also very good, and the wait staff in the dining room has been very good as well. All and all this has been a very nice cruise for a budget cruise line. Ken and Gabi have enjoyed their first cruise immensely, and I'm very happy for them.

Tomorrow, we are back home, but the memories will last forever.

  • First Port Day

    3. februar 2024, Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today, we arrive on Nassau, which is the capital of the Bahamas. We don't dock until 9:00 AM. I'm always amazed at the skill of the captain who gas to dock these huge beasts without hitting anything. It's absolutely amazing. A Carnival ship is already docked, and a Royal Caribbean ship is also here. After we dock, a Disney ship comes in. I'm glad we are staying on board. There are 4 ships here today. The port is going to be crazy.

We all meet for breakfast and enjoy the fact that half the people are not here. I can't imagine what the port is like with 12,000 + people there. There are no crowds at the buffet, no problem finding a seat. Yes!

After breakfast, we head down to deck 5 to check out some of the ship while it is empty. There is a nice central staircase where Gabi and I have some fun with poses. We found the cigar lounge on deck 6. This is a quiet, cozy place where Ken can have a smoke inside.

We then headed up to deck 14 for some hot tub fun. We meet a nice couple and chat about the differences between the USA and Canada. Then I show them the blogs and talk about travel.

All three of us head to the hot tub and enjoy a soak. Then, back to the deck for a bit.

After a quick lunch, we had a drink, and I head back for a nap. One more trip to the hot tub, and then it's time for a shower before dinner. We could get used to this daily routine.

Another successful dinner. I had the snapper, Gabi had Cajun shrimp, and Ken had the sirloin steak. We all enjoyed our meal. Afterward, we headed to the cigar lounge for our night cap of Jack and Coke. Gabi joined us for wine as well. Another port day tomorrow, so we should have some peace and quiet again.

  • First Full Day On Board

    2.–4. feb. 2024, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I had a great sleep. The bed was amazingly comfortable. The darkness of the room is okay for me. I had requested that the beds get separated, but that hasn't happened yet. The bedside table is crowded with my c-pap, the phone, and the TV remote. I will have to get the beds separated. I phoned the front desk to get housekeeping, but 40 minutes later, I gave up. I need coffee!

I grab Ken and off we go for coffee. Gabi joins a bit later, and we have breakfast up on in the buffet. It is loud and crowded. It was hard to find a table, but we managed. I was a little disappointed that there was no station to make omelets. They have plenty of food areas: hot breakfast, cereal and yogurt, fresh fruit, breads, and pastries. Something for everyone.

Afterward, we headed back to the open deck 14. There is a smoking area here for Ken. We finally got into the hot tub. My back is still not the best, and Ken's knee is still sore.

Soaking in the tub is nice. We sit back down for a bit. I grab a slice of pizza and salad for lunch, Gabi has some pizza, and Ken has a beer. (Still full from breakfast). The pool deck is very crowded and loud since it is a sea day. They have a lot of entertainment going on from dancing to contests. The weather has been nice, sunny, and about 22 C or 74 F.

We headed back to the room to have a nap. My room is very cold, I think the thermostat is broken. I will have to get a hold of the cabin steward. They have split my beds now, and I have much more space.

After a nice nap, we all headed back up to deck 14. Ken and I head to the hot tub, and Gabi enjoys the sun on the deck. We get to try different drinks this afternoon. I have a vodka and cranberry, Gabi tries a bloody Mary ( way too spicy), and Ken sticks with a Heineken. Mine is pretty good. We sit and enjoy people watching for a bit. We head back down for a shower before dinner.

There is plenty of hot water, and the shower is big enough for me. The blow dryer works well, and pretty soon I'm ready for dinner. We all head down together.

Gabi goes with a lobster tail, Ken has the chicken Parma, and I do the salmon. All our dinners were very good. Yes, there are the obligatory food shots down below.

After dinner, Gabi heads back to the room. She is still bothered by the motion of the ocean and needs a Gravol. Ken and I headed back up to 14 for our now customary Jack and Coke nightcap.

Ken heads back to the room, and I head down to the Casino. No luck at all. I leave my donations and head back for a good night's sleep.
