  • Tory Island

    October 6, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Caught ferry to Tory Island at 11. Not a big ferry! Luckily the seas were smooth for the hour trip. We went to Tory Island because Jacko's grandmother was a Doohan and this is where they originated from. Unable to trace back past 3 generations (common for all families). We walked out to the lighthouse. Finally one of the 2 pubs opened at 2 and we had pizza for lunch. The manager was a Doohan so we had a good chat. It bucketed down while we were in there, but when it was time to leave the sun was out again. We had a great time over there. While there we were 15200km from home. Back on mainland for tea, and then an earlyish night.Read more

  • Loch Altan - Belfast

    October 7, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

A couple of flu-filled souls with not much sleep made for a pleasant morning - not! On the road at 9. Planned to stop for a wander in Londonderry, but a wrong turn and traffic queues changed that idea. Quick toilet stop and back on the road. Arrived at lunch destination just on 12. A thatched pub operating since 1832.
Arrived at Belfast airport to drop car off. Taxi into town (another humerous taxi driver). Got settled then walked to Titanic museum. Very interesting place. Walked back along the river, a couple of pubs, tea then back for bed. Not sure what to make of Belfast. We saw both ends of the scale and the differences are very noticeable.

  • Belfast - Glasgow

    October 8, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

After rain all night the day started gloomy but dry. The ferry trip from Belfast was quite calm, and we arrived in Cairnryan on time. We got the bus to Glasgow, riding through the lovely city centre. The scenery on the way was beautiful - the first part following the coast line. Our accommodation is a little out of town but it is a very bustling scene. We had dinner in the 'Old School House' before heading off to bed. Picking up another car tomorrow for the next adventure.....Read more

  • Glasgow - Kenmore

    October 9, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Left at 8.30 for 30 minutes walk to pick up car. Finally organised and drove out of Glasgow at about 9.45. We enjoyed our time there. First stop was the Falkirk Wheel. We watched it go round- fascinating. From there we got off the main road and took to the country lanes to Doune for a picnic lunch. After lunch we explored Doune Castle and much to our delight discovered that Monty Python filmed 'The Holy Grail' there. It has been used for other movies and TV shows. We then stopped at Killen to look at the Falls of Dochart. Lovely little place on a river. It has a mill with working wheel. It is no longer a working mill.
The pub we had a drink at is said to be 600-800 years old. From there to Loch Rannoch Hotel Resort, where I worked during the Scottish summer of 1988. Being in that beautiful location again brought back so many wonderful memories of that time. And it was so cold today! We journeyed back to Kenmore to book in. Once again the farms & forest are gorgeous. Fat sheep & highland cows being the stars of the show! Tea at the Courtyard Bar then back to unit for bed. Another busy day tomorrow!

  • Kenmore- York

    October 10, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

We left just before 8 this morning and it was quite chilly- around -2°! We drove along the very picturesque Loch Tay. We arrived in Edinburgh and went straight to the Castle. It is a very imposing place. We wandered down the Royal Mile before heading off. Our drive south took us through some really pretty landscapes. We arrived in York at around 6.30pm. A really gorgeous place.Read more

  • York- Cambridge

    October 11, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Started the day at the Jorvick Viking Museum. Very well done and 'interactive '. After that we walked around 'The Shambles'. Walked through museum gardens. Totally loved it. York is a really beautiful place. Traffic in the centre is very ordinary, so we chose to bypass it. Off down the highway to Cottesmore, Rutland.
We went there to place a poppy on the grave of W. T. Curhbetson (my 'almost uncle'). That poppy was the last thing Mum knitted, knowing where it was going to go. Another emotional experience for various reasons. From there we ventured to Cambridge via the A14. However, on the way, we encountered a huge traffic jam due to an accident. It took us an hour to travel 4 miles. We were late for car drop off, but the chap was happy with everything, so all good. After finding accommodation, we walked around to find a good place for tea and then to bed

  • Cambridge - London

    October 12, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Wet night, but clearing by the time we got organised. Caught the train to Whittlesford (my grandfather grew up here [Mum's dad]). We went over the road from train station to the Red Lion hotel. They agreed to hold our bags while we went off. The pub began life as a monastery in the 1300s. Beautiful carved beams and revealed wood wall frames. A most gorgeous pub. We got a taxi to the Duxford Air Museum and spent 2 of the most amazing hours of our lives. Bi-planes and others were taking off and landing (joy flights).
The collection and display was so awesome!
We got a taxi back to the pub, planning to have lunch, only finding that the chef became ill and had to be taken to hospital! So we got on the train to London. We got there and finally sorted the right train to be on. Got to our accommodation just after 5. Not a flash area but accommodation is good. Out to find tea then back by 9pm.

    October 13, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We had a lovely, lazy morning before heading into town. Luckily, the rain cleared. We walked lots and saw lots. In Trafalgar Square, we came across a 3 piece band busking - they nailed Deep Purple's Highway Star.
    London has it all.
Even though I have lived here (long time ago), it was amazing to see it all again.

    October 14, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

We woke to a grey wet day, but that didn't matter. Got various trains into town again. Found Abbey Road and saw the famous cross walk. Then onto Lord's Cricket Ground for our tour. Very interesting and lovely place. It was awesome to walk in the same corridors and rooms as the legends. We had a very delicious lunch at Lord's Tavern. Well worth the effort. Following that we got on another train to see Churchill's War Rooms. A long line but we got in quite easily. Another very interesting place. Along with the Churchill's Museum were the underground War Rooms, Map Room, accommodation, kitchen. It would have been quite intense at the time.
From there we had tea in a pub at Liverpool St, then caught the train home. We were held up for a bit because of a trespasser on the track further up. We eventually got to our stop, but not after being thoroughly entertained by the train driver's announcement about 'the bloke should be arrested soon, but in the meantime, only busses further up.'

    October 15, 2024 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

We were up early on order to get us and bags on train before the crush set in. And a crush it is. We got to Heathrow ar about 7.30 and it was pretty constant to wait in line and get processed. Brekky at 8.30 and then to gate for a short wait to boarding. A good flight (3 hours). A very very long walk to baggage collection. Got train into city. Very impressed by all we saw on the way. Traffic congestion does not appear to be a thing in peak hour! Checked in to hotel then spent a few hours wandering around this lovely city. Will see more tomorrow arvo.Read more

  • Liljendal

    October 16, 2024 in Finland ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

This morning we picked up our hire car and drove up the lovely motorway to Liljendal. My great grandfather (ggf) came from this area. It was only 70km away so didn't take long. Such a beautiful little town. We went into the Municipal Office and spoke to some people. The lady, Carolina, took us to Garpom (where ggf grew up). An area made up of small farms. We had a look through their tiny museum which was a house dating from 1890 and was set up as such. Really cool. We then went on to Haddas Farm, where ggf was from. They have a weather vane with the date 1792- year farm was established. Not sure how old the house is, but possibly in ggf's time. I was very happy and at home the whole time we were there. Very kind and generous people. We got back to Helsinki around 3. Nicolo and I walked to and around the marina/port area. Very scenic. Tea at about 8. We walked back to hotel. The fellas have gone off for a couple more drinks. I am done for the day.Read more

    October 17, 2024 in Finland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Off at 9 to catch ferry to Soumenlinna Fort, just off Helsinki coast. An old fortress from the late 1700s. Some amazing buildings and architecture. Cannons and wild coastline. We got back to the mainland, picked up our luggage and after lunch at an Aussie bar we found, caught the train to the airport. Our flight is delayed for an hour. Helsinki is a wonderful place. So open and not a huge amount of people. It was refreshing to come here after the crush of London. The people are very friendly. The weather has been chilly. Even for the locals as they are rugged up as well!Read more

  • Prague

    October 17, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Our flight was nearly 2 hours late, and we were worried that we would miss our connection. All good - same airline, so they held it for all connecting passengers. Our 2 hour stopover in Copenhagen turned into 15 minutes! We arrived in Prague only half an hour late.
After brekky, we went off to find a laundromat and do a bit of exploring. The boys went off the other way. Gorgeous architecture everywhere. We met up for lunch at one of the many Irish pubs. Then we went our separate ways again. We did the bridge & admired more architecture. By 4, we were done. Back to our room for a rest. Met up with the boys again at 6. KFC for tea on our last night! But the bonus is we ate it on the rooftop area of our hotel. Early night.
