A FASCINATING MEDIEVAL CATACLYSM: CHRONICLES OF A JOURNEY TO JOIGNY
**THE ILLUSION OF POSTCARDS AND THE REALITY OF THE STREET**
I arrived in Joigny expecting the typical medieval fairy tale with princes, maidens, and lute music. What I found was an open-air museum having a massive existential crisis.
The Upper Town is beautiful, I won't deny it. Its timber-framed houses survived the fire of 1530 and the centuries—which is quite an achievement, because I saw some crooked beams that seem to defy gravity through pure Burgundian faith and tradition. It's the classic postcard setting that makes you want to grab your camera, until you realize that half the shops in the historic center have their shutters down and the only breathing you can hear is your own—or that of a confused cat. Outside the tourist circuit, the Lower Town greets you with that touch of French rural decadence: tired asphalt, empty premises, and an atmosphere of "nothing has happened here since the French Revolution."
**THE TWO EXTREMES OF THE SAME ABYSS**
The funny part is the contrast. On one hand, you have historic buildings falling apart between blocked inheritances and neighbors who probably long forgot what lies behind their walled-up walls; on the other, you learn that La Côte Saint-Jacques lives here—a temple of haute cuisine with Michelin stars where a menu costs as much as half a month's rent. I find it fascinating to be in a place where you can starve to death in a deserted alley or spend a year's salary on an oyster with a local vineyard staging just fifty meters away.
**A PERFECT REFUGE TO ESCAPE… OR TO GET BORED**
In the end, Joigny is a play with a brilliant first act and a rather gray backstage. Living here? If you like absolute peace, the smell of ancient stone, and have a car to escape to Sens or Paris when the silence crushes you, it's a perfect refuge. For the rest of us mortals, it's a magnificent stop to stretch your legs, eat like a king with a count complex, and silently thank your lucky stars that your home doesn't depend on a 16th-century Renaissance beam.
**THE LIMITATIONS OF THE SCREEN**
I know that what you're seeing in these photos and videos cannot even come close to conveying how special this city is. I'm sorry for you, dear reader, but it's the most I can do to try to bring you—even if only in the tiniest percentage—the real experience of inhabiting this strange corner of the world.Read more
