THE ART OF SPENDING A FORTUNE ON WHEELS FROM CHANTILLY
    Travel diary by DerBlaueBussle………
Welcome to Chantilly, that corner of deepest France where the bourgeoisie decided that untouched lawn is worth more than your house, your car and your student debts put together. Located in the Oise department, just 50 kilometres from Paris, this picturesque town boasts canals, forests and a very aristocratic atmosphere. I came here on Sunday, 13 September 2026, with the firm intention of understanding why people prefer to admire gleaming nuts and bolts – and, along the way, to question my own financial decisions.
AN ELEGANCE CONTEST THAT LEAVES MILAN’S RUNWAYS IN THE DUST
Describing the “Chantilly Arts & Elegance – Richard Mille” without exaggeration is impossible. It is basically an eccentric, high-end excuse for the planet’s richest automotive industry to meet haute couture and prove to the world that when money is truly abundant, you spend it on things that are absurdly beautiful and utterly useless. Here, future prototypes and museum classics parade in unison while attendees try to hold a glass of champagne without fainting.
A FAIRY-TALE CASTLE FOR MILLIONAIRES WITH EXCELLENT TASTE
The stage for this display of vanity is the imposing Château de Chantilly, a Renaissance architectural jewel surrounded by moats, postcard-perfect towers and kilometre-long gardens designed by Le Nôtre himself. The castle is not just a pretty backdrop for profile pictures; it is the passive protagonist that gives the event its patina of feudal nobility. Basically, it serves as a reminder that even if you buy a car identical to the one on display, you will never possess the historical elegance of breakfasting surrounded by priceless artworks while hypercars roll across immaculate lawns – except on the day of the event.
SIZE DOES MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO MULTI-MILLION BUDGETS
To grasp the level of delirium I signed up for that Sunday, let’s talk numbers, because the scale of this event is as obscene as it is fascinating. We’re talking about a massive gathering that drew around 28,000 visitors willing to pay to see a concentration of more than 1,000 exceptional vehicles scattered across the palace grounds. Among them stand out 900 classic cars contributed by some 40 European car clubs come to show off their relics, plus a surgically precise selection of 17 contest classes (categories) where the “most beautiful cars in the world” compete.
With such a display of cheque books and chrome, the “Chantilly Arts & Elegance” does not compete in just any league: it clings firmly to the global top 3 of the most exclusive elegance contests on the planet, rubbing shoulders without inhibition with the legendary “Pebble Beach” in the United States and the “Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este” in Italy (Lake Como). In short, a living open-air museum where mere mortals watch millions roll by on four wheels, while owners calculate whether they can write off the maintenance of a V12 engine as a tax deduction.
LUXURY PICNIC: LUXURY AND WICKER (PANIER) AT MORTGAGE PRICES
This basket combined high-end French gourmet takeaway cuisine – including select delicacies and fine wines – with prices starting at 350 euros. The result is a countryside menu where every bite costs as much as the very meadow you’re sitting on.
THE €20 MILLION TOY: A PONY WITH 1,600 HORSEPOWER
A Bugatti Brouillard. This one-off piece, valued at 20 million, pays tribute to Ettore Bugatti’s favourite horse. The best part: it is the apotheotic farewell to the 1,600-horsepower engine, with green carbon fibre and details made from real mane. A millionaire whim so absurd that it outshines any castle.
