  • St Isaacs Cathedral

    June 11, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

It is the 4th largest cathedral in Russia. It is symbolic to Russians for the old and new Russia.

We were supposed to pay to take our cameras in, so we left the big ones in the transport and brought the little one just in case. It was a good call as we were able to snap a few covertly. Hope they don’t stop me at customs and ask to see my pictures. I can see it now, some big Russian woman in a big hat looking at the pictures and looking up at me saying “ Is this St. Isaacs Cathedral? Oh you’re in trouble now Canuck “Read more

  • Yusupov Palace

    June 11, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The Yusupovs were the second richest family in Russia and descendants still survive today in France. The killing of Rasputin is a famous story and depicted in the Palace because this is where it occurred.
The Palace is extraordinary and has a home theatre. Not like the ones we have as movies were not invented yet. This one has a stage, orchestra pit, box seats, loge seats, balcony and regular seating for about one hundred. The story is Mr Yusupov built it for his wife, who fancied herself as an actress. Plays were written just for her to star in. My guess is she wanted to play a poor girl from unfortunate circumstances as a way to ease her troubled mind.

No cameras were allowed inside, unless you paid an expensive charge. Our tour guide took the picture in the theatre.

  • Day 3 St Petersburg- METRO RIDE

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Last day in St Petersburg and we are dragging butt! Slow to get going but arrived at the bus to see our 10 companions already there. Smiles on; first stop; a Metro ride!

Svetlana gives us all tokens to ride. Good instructions on how to board and such. I’m busy taking pictures as this is the nicest subway station I have ever seen. I doubt the locals are impressed with us, but it is hard to tell as the general facial expression is indifference.Read more

  • Metro ride

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Here we go! The first metros in St. Petersburg will built in the 50’s. They say it is a Palace for the people. The one we went was much newer. The Admiralteyskaya goes down 86 meters below ground. The subway travels under the river Moya.

We are travelling in a group of 12 of which 9 have never been on a subway before. Dianne sits with a group of Canadians in our subway car. They all look pretty happy to be riding. See if you can pick out the local from the picture.

  • The Hermitage

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There is security at the entry to the Hermitage museum, like all museums around here. Our group of 12 doesn’t have any problems with it until the last guy, who is me. I do security all the time and generally get it right. Today I have pockets full of stuff, a communication device with an earphone, my passport holder strung underneath my jacket, and a camera in my hand. I leave the camera and walk through the metal detector. It rings, so I take out my cellphone, rings again and security Ivan suggests it’s my man purse underneath my jacket. I try to take it off but it is strung around my neck and gets caught in the earpiece I’m wearing. There is a huge line behind me and I can sense an angry mob mentality starting to grow. All the others of my group ahead are waiting and saying don’t worry, we’ve got all day. Ivan makes me move aside while others who are better prepared pass through. I wrestle with my jacket and headset and passport holder, finally getting it all piled in a heap beside the metal detector and walk through again. Beeeeep!!! I’ve taken off everything I can think of, but there is still a pen in my pocket. Out it comes and finally I pass through without alarm. My group is still saying, to take my time, but I can see they are clearly enjoying my predicament. I refill my pockets, don my jacket and headset and silently curse the pen in my pocket.Read more

  • The Winter Palace - Hermitage

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Here rests a collection started by Catherine the Great and added to by others. The Hermitage museum rivals the Louvre for masterpieces of art. They have Rembrandt, Picasso, Matisse, DaVinci, Michael Angelo, Degas, Monet, Cezanne, and Van Gogh to name some. You could spend a lot more time here than we did, and it was crowded as six cruise ships are docked and they are bringing them in by the bus load. We kept moving throughout.Read more

  • Peter and Paul fortress

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

This was presented as a very important and special structure. Being originally built in 1703 it was one the first buildings of the city. It is an important military structure, has been used as a political prison and is the burial site for the Russian Tzars.

This was near the end of the day and we are pretty tired at this point and was hard to get a smile on Grumpy’s face for another selfie.

  • Inside Peter and Paul Fortress

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

What is left of the Romanovs is buried here, at the original site of St. Petersburg. I would say that people here have a soft spot in their hearts for the Tzars and their family because there is an impression of quiet respect from everyone here. This city was basically built by the Romanovs and it is impressive.Read more

  • Tallinn, Estonia

    June 13, 2019 in Estonia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Oh good Dianne brought her handy-dandy thing-a-majigger! So it is selfie day!

I am not interested in going to a museum if it doesn’t have a Rembrandt or a DaVinci! Tallinn has non of those so we stay out of the museums and instead head for the souvenir shops. I get a tee shirt in about 5 minutes, Dianne takes a lot longer and many more shops to find hers.Read more

  • Stockholm

    June 14, 2019 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was a bit of a cluster@#$& this morning getting out of the port and in the van with SPB. There are 6 of us off the boat, the tour guide Maria and the driver Veronica.

So we go for a driving tour around town, the traffic is a bit overwhelming but we get to our first stop Vasa Museum.

If you couldn’t figure out the last pic...it is a commode!

  • Vasa ship

    June 14, 2019 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Largest ship of its age ever salvaged. Interesting story. King Gustav commissioned the war ship with some other ships as well. This one was built first and with a lot of input from the King. I guess he fancied himself as a ship designer. The boat was built pretty quickly, in about a year. The man in charge ultimately of the design of the ship was named Captain of the vessel. On August 10 1628, Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage and sank in Stockholm harbour. She hadn’t got far, maybe a kilometre or so. The wreck was salvaged in 1961 and is now in a museum that in my opinion is a very nice museum dedicated to the glorification of vanity and incompetence. Harsh, I know.Read more

  • Still at the Vasa Museum

    June 14, 2019 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

This is a model of the Vasa ship as it was. There is extraordinary detail in the carvings and colours that they found the ship to have.. After being the ocean for more than 300 years pieces of ropes, sails, and even some remains of the 50 people who perished in the quick descent of the ship.Read more

  • City Hall - Stockholm

    June 14, 2019 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A little disappointing to see as it is under construction. Here is a couple shots of the courtyard. You can be married here. There are 2 types of services; a short one and a long one, the long one is 3 minutes and the short is 30 seconds!

Kick bikes apparently are the latest thing in Stockholm and are used as much as bikes.
