On December 22nd, movers loaded all of our belongings into a truck to haul off to long-term storage in upstate NY. Wow. I was more emotional leaving our apartment than I expected to be. But, running on adrenaline now. I wonder how I'll feel once we settle in.Read more

We spent our first night of camper life in the parking lot of a (Methodist?) church in Mt. Kisco.

The church participates in Harvest Hosts, which is an indispensable resource on this trip. We pay a yearly fee to access overnight stays at churches, farms, breweries, and more. They suggest you purchase something from the host (if they have retail, like produce from a farm store or beer from a brewery), or otherwise they suggest a donation.

We had dinner in a nice restaurant near the train tracks. I can't remember the name, but it was a nice meal. Did I have steak?

The next day, in what would turn out to be the beginning of our long process of minimizing our cargo, after driving about 10 mins, we turned back and donated some canned goods to the church's food pantry. Cerelle worried that some of the items might have been past their expiration date.Read more

Another Harvest Host. We stayed at Mohican Farms in Blairstown, NJ. It was cold and wet. We parked in the parking lot right in front of the farm store -- the only place that wasn't muddy. The cold and grey is already getting to us.Read more

Artillery Ridge Campground & Horse Park

"Well, that looks expensive." The first, and only, thing our neighbor said to me during our stay here.

We had reserved a nice spot in the corner of the campground, but it turned out the water was off there for the winter. And we needed water. So, they moved us in among a cluster of families who seemed to be living there long-term.

It was one of those moments that you think a lot about later, trying to concoct a more perfect response. I had merely shrugged, which I guess was fine. But what if I'd been fast enough to say something really sharp and witty, maybe like, "expensive is as expensive does." No, probably not that.

It turned out to be a decent stay. There was a guy behind us from New Jersey. I wasn't expecting that accent in Gettysburg. He and his wife like to travel with their two horses, to go riding. I didn't realize that's a thing, but now I know.Read more

Sharonview Farm, Monroe, NC

We arrived toward the end of the day, but still enough time for a tour of the mushroom farm. They grow mushrooms in logs in the forest. Only shitake were in season, but we picked and purchased a couple of pounds. They also sold us a half dozen fresh eggs.

The next morning was a gorgeous day. Sunny and crisp. We lingered, drinking coffee and enjoying the pleasant vibe. They were such nice, warm people. The place exudes positivity and resourcefulness.

It seems I did not manage to get a photo of a mushroom on the mushroom farm. But I did get that moldy old Cadillac.Read more

Oconee Brewing

It was already dark when we arrived to a full parking lot, including a number of cop cars. Despite our fears and hopes that we'd be intruding on bar brawl, it was in fact a retirement party for the local sheriff's office.

The brewery was fine. They served beer. Friendly people. I am learning; in the south if you are not over the top friendly (by NY standards) you will be read as surly.

Cerelle wanted to buy the piece of land across the street. It's a cute town, with some antique stores and a café. But small. Tiny.

I shopped at a cute market called Ripe Thing. Got some veggies, some meats, and some farmhouse pickles.Read more
