We started the Cassiar-Stewart hwy today. Maybe less than an hour from 16 we picked out this beautiful spot on Crown land in northern BC.

There were a few people in and out earlier today, since this is the access point for the lake, including an odd fellow who was swimming and then driving his remote control truck on beach.

If I what I read is correct these are maybe a hundred years old, so not ancient. But pretty cool.

When I read about them I expected they'd be in some sort of touristy situation, but they were just there along the road in front of some houses.Read more

We camped for a night on the side of the road in West Seattle. Great view of the Seattle skyline.

We worried a lot about whether we'd get a knock, but no. Had a great night sleep.

Oregon state forest boondock

This was a beautiful spot on the top of a hill in an Oregon state forest. So nice, we stayed an extra night. Could see sunset and sunrise.

The only bummer was that there was trash, especially a lot of shotgun shells and bullet casings. Cerelle picked up a big bag's worth.Read more

Cool boondocking spot near Mt. Hood, right on the river. The river was pretty rough, but people had blocked off these two pools you could hang out in. The water was cold.

Craters of the Moon

Huge lava field -- flood basalt, to be accurate -- created by the same hotspot that's now under Yellowstone.

Before hiking in the lava tubes they give you a mini lecture about the white nose fungus that kills bats. They say it stays on your clothes forever unless you soak in bleach, so you could transmit from one cave to another one years later, if you wear the same clothing.

There was a little amphitheater at the campground and the rangers gave a lecture at night. I guess they're PhD students when they're not rangering. We learned some interesting tidbits, but it was also a little weird and boring so we left early.Read more

Stupendous. Another last-minute call. It was only a little out of our way as we headed to Provo to drop some stuff in storage before our Canada-Alaska trip. Well worth it. We did a hike down into the canyon, which I had a rough time with for some reason, but it was beautiful.Read more

The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has a very dog-friendly hotel in Kanab. We stayed one night because of the heat. It was lovely.

Another visit to Flagstaff

We headed back to Flagstaff, since that's where the doggos are staying while we go to Greece for Sandy's wedding.

Adal and Lorena were great. They have this amazing little homestead near Flagstaff, with a garden, ducks, chickens, rabbits, a little blacksmith shop. For the dogs it was like summer camp.

When we came back, Lorena made a delicious quiche -- seriously delicious. Adal gave us an incredible first-aid course for humans and dogs. They also gave us a trauma kit to keep with us. They were awesome.Read more

Petrified Forest NP

A last minute call to swing through the Petrified Forest, and glad we did. It was stunning. First, just an amazing landscape of desert and badlands. But, the petrified wood is beautiful!

It was pretty hot, though -- 90s, maybe 100 -- so hard to spend too much time outside.Read more

I think we ended up eating here 3 times, since it was the only game in town. Tons of local color, but sloooooooow service. Once we just ordered fries to go and it took 40 mins.

Because the road is closed, this ends up being a 10 mile round trip. It was a bit much for us, but the hot springs were beautiful -- a really stunning place.

When we got there, there was one guy, so pretty quiet for most of the time we were there. More people started showing up just as we were going, so we timed it well.

We had previously attempted a shortcut via another road, which we later learned was not a legal route. We'd left because just after we parked, and just as we were starting the hike, there was a guy lurking in the bushes following us. Super creepy so we split and did the full, legit hike the next day.Read more

This is downhill from Jemez Springs. We had low expectations at first, but it turned out to be a pretty sweet campground, right on a river and beautiful views. While we were there, the moon rose over the cliffs, and I managed to take a cool shot holding the camera up to a pair of binoculars.Read more
