    Outdoor climbing

    Having taken yesterday to just sunbath near the pool, today I went rock climbing. We drove out to a little river outside the city and went to a spot in the mountain which had been split in two. Having never climbed outside, this was quite the learning experience and weirdly both harder and easier than indoor climbing. I was with a nice group and I had a fun morning.Okumaya devam et

    Back on another bumpy minibus ride, this time to the capital. The city is pretty underwhelming and very low rise for a capital; didn't really see any large hotels or businesses. They do however have their own version of the Arc de Triomphe which you can go to the top off and look out across the city. It has some nice looking embassies and ex-colonial buildings which are now catering to tourists. We had a wonder around, saw the sunset by the Mekong (which flows all the way through the country) and dinner before looking at the huge night market.Okumaya devam et

    Buddha park and COPE

    We successfully took the public bus out to the strange Buddha park. The place is quite small but it is chocked full of hand-carved statues and a small building you can climb into and up through which is also full of statues. There is a mix of Buddhas and Hindu statues throughout, some happy and beautiful and some darker ones. It's an interesting place to wonder around. After heading back to the city we visited the COPE centre which has a small museum dedicated to the cluster bomb and it effects. The centre itself is a charity which support people who have been affected by the bombs and does amazing work providing prosthetic for free. Finished the day in a fancy cafe with a blue butterfly pea latte.Okumaya devam et

    Bolaven Plateau

    I took the overnight bus to Pakse and transferred straight to the tour, due to the bus being late, quick wash/clothes change at the first cafe and I was set for the day. We drove around a small section of the Bolaven Plateau visiting three waterfalls, a tea and coffee farm and finished in a local village where we watched the locals chipping cassava in preparation for drying. I had lunch at an unexpectedly post hotel before wading into the shallow cascading waterfall and enjoying the sun. Little too cold for a swim.Okumaya devam et

    Pakse

    Last day in Laos. There isn't much on the tourist side of Pakse, just a few hotels and restaurants as essentially tourists just use it to sleep before going to the plateau or further south. I borrowed a hostel bike and cycled over to a temple on the other side of the river. The cycle wasn't too far but got lots of odd looks from the locals, not sure they were used to seeing us this far out on a bike. I stopped on the way and looked around the biggest non-tourist market I have ever been too. The place was huge and split into all different sections and at the back they have a parking lot full of pick-ups full of people from local tribes who come into the town to buy and sell their goods. The temple was up a surprising number of steps but did have a giant gold Buddha and views of the Mekong which made it worth it.

    In the afternoon I started the long journey to Bangkok. First up a mini-bus out to the boarder, which was just some scrub land and a few buildings for passport control and a tunnel under no-mans land into Thailand. Once we had our visa stamped in and out, I got a mini-bus and taxi to the nearest train station where a lovely lady on the info desk told me to pre-buy some dinner, let me on to the Wi-Fi, and how to find my car. Luckily I was there in plenty of time. I had got a sleeper bunk and there was a bag of clean sheets and a pillow and plenty of spaces for bags. I settled in for the evening and slept pretty well until the morning when the guard changed our beds back into seats. A little late, and 17 hours later, I arrived in Bangkok.    Okumaya devam et

    Bangkok

    Today's exploration started with a visit to a large sports shop an hour out of the centre, I then planned to slowly make my way back into the centre via the public riverboat service which was quiet when I got on and rammed by the time we were in the centre. There's a lot of different architecture to see from the river; colonial, religious, trendy and high-rise towers. I spent some of the afternoon exploring many of the alley ways in Chinatown where I was staying. This area is known for its wholesale show shops and there are more shoes on show than I'd ever seen. These shops join on to a sort of market which is made up of conjoining alleys flanked by shops which spill out into the alley, allowing just a thin procession of people through. I happened across another magical Bangkok park before heading to the colourful and heaving Chinatown for an al fresco dinner.Okumaya devam et

    Cycling Bangkok to Hua Hin (56km)

    Having spent yesterday enjoying the rooftop pool at the hotel, it was now time to start the epic cycling tour. We met our guides and then boarded the mini-van to head south to Petchaburi where we visited Tham Khao Luang temple cave. It had two main rooms and was about three stories high., legion has it an old King discovered the place by abseiling down into it from an air hole at ground level. We had lunch at a trendy cafe, before heading to the hotel in Hua Hun to leave our bags and collect our bikes. Now I was super nervous, everyone else cycled as their main hobby or commuted by bike, which put me firmly in the worse cyclist category. Luckily today's warm up round cycle to Hua Hin was slow and traffic free. We went through farms and plantations and stopped at Wat Mongkol, a popular shrine with a huge image of the famous monk.     Hua Hin to Kuiburi (86km)

    Having got to know people a little better over dinner the group began to bond a little better. Unfortunately most people were German and English was not the main language but there were a small group of us that spoke English. We started early to avoid the heat and headed south along the dedicated cycle routes. I was glad of the rest when we got stuck behind a slow-moving herd of cows. We cycled past lots of lush green rice fields and coconut plantations before stopping for a break at a temple. We were at our hotel just after lunch and most of us spent the afternoon by the pool. looking out at the beach.Okumaya devam et

    Kuiburi to Haad Baan Krut (108km)

    We continue to cycle south along the coast and passed through an unusual army base. It's right on the coast, and while you have to check in, and aren't supposed to take photos, it seemed a popular local tourist spots (not many international travellers around here) as it has a good beach but also plenty of army barracks and checkpoints. After lunch we continued cycling to Wat Tang Sai Tempel which sat on a small hill, giving it lovely views out to sea. It has an impressive entrance and the inside is covered in hand painted murals, and unusually stained glass windows. Once again our hotel was right on the beach with a great pool.Okumaya devam et

    Haad Baan Krut to Chumphon (140km)

    Our longest day cycling, which was hard work through the heat of the afternoon. We carried on cycling along the coastal path and up a steep hill to get a beautiful panoramic view out the sea, carrying on a bit further we stopped at a temple with a large white Buddha, perched even higher up. The keen-beans cycled up but I enjoyed the walk up and you can enter the Buddha and go up to viewing platform.Okumaya devam et

    Rest day

    We have a much deserved day off the bike, which made me happy. After breakfast we had a Thai cooking class taught by one of the guides. We made some classics; coconut soup, green Thai curry and green papaya salad, all delicious. We all got a chance to participate which was fun, but a bit much straight after breakfast. Miranda and I went to beach for the afternoon and sunbathed, swam and explored a few of the local bars. Dinner tonight was a pizza buffet as the hotel owners were Italian.Okumaya devam et

    Today we cycled past some lovely fishing villages and sea views, near then end of the journey we stopped at a picturesque bridge over the river. It barely seemed stable for us to walk over but somehow the locals were happy to ride over it. We stayed at an amazing hotel tonight, with three different kinds of banana snacks in the rooms, double balconies and two bathrooms. I took an evening stroll down to the beach and found local families fishing on the beach with long nets, which they pulled up onto the beach and then the kids ran along picking up the fish.Okumaya devam et

    Today was long! We stopped for breaks but nowhere very exciting, today was about getting as far down south as possible before we start our journey across to the west coast.     Surat Thani to Cheow Lake Koh Sok (82km)

    We cycle to the Ratchapraba dam via a temple with a giant sacred tree. Once in the national park we take a long tail boat across the lake to the floating huts we're staying in. The lake is a beautiful colour and we have a leisurely afternoon swimming and kayaking before taking an evening boat tour to watch the sunset. The floating accommodation has a fish farm on the side with some huge ravenous fish.Okumaya devam et

    Ratchapraba to Phuket (59km)

    It’s the last day of cycling! We board the long-tail boat back to the mainland and continue our cycle south to a small village for lunch. After lunch we all congratulate ourselves on completing the tour in one piece. We store the bikes away before hopping in the minibus to finish the journey to Nai Yang Beach. I check-in to my hostel when I have a room to myself and enjoy hunting out some delicious local food for dinner.Okumaya devam et

    Kata Village, Phuket

    I spent yesterday and today doing very little. Sitting by the pool, walking to the different beaches, (Kata and Kata Noi) swimming in the sea, exploring the shops and market by the beach and basically relaxing. The beaches are packed; the busiest places I've been for ages. Kata is essential just a huge number of hotels and restaurants. For a bit of entertainment I went to Simon's Cabaret in the next town which is a fun drag show with amazing costumes.Okumaya devam et

    Racha Yai & Coral Island

    Today I went on a snorkelling tour, which was more of a beach tour but I still had a good time. After lots of waiting around at the office for our departure and a quick breakfast of instant coffee, sweet toast and marmalade we finally walked down to our boat. It was a wet ride to our snoreklling spot off the beach at Racha Yai. We had an early lunch on the island, after which I walked over to the deserted and beautiful bay on the other side. There weren’t many fish to see at Coral Island but there were a lot of sea urchins! Plenty of beautiful sights to see on the tour but not that many fish.Okumaya devam et

    Phuket old town

    I took the local blue bus (songthaew) into Phuket old town which is about 45mins from the beach resort I was staying at with a plan to see the famous colourful buildings. The center of town was much pretty than I expected given the very modern outskirts but they have preserved 3 or 4 streets for tourism. The area had painted houses and shops, cute craft shops, lots of street art, colonial buildings and a large temple. I enjoyed a delicious freshly made roti and curry at a traditional but famous hotspot and a shaved ice topped with everything. I spent my final evening down on the beach before going to the night market for a fresh fish dinner.Okumaya devam et

    Bangkok old town and street art

    Seeking something different for my last day in Bangkok I took a motorbike taxi to Talat Noi to hunt out some street art. Talat Noi was a special little area in Bangkok. It still had old fashioned wooden fronted houses, tiny passage ways, street art, garages with massive piles of spare parts, lots of food stalls and I had my best handmade Thai tea here. Seeing a different side to Bangkok was a perfect end to my trip.Okumaya devam et
