    Flew into Portland last night and had a quick visit with Robert and Britany-got a quick glimpse of Blake before she went to bed. Woke up to a rental car that wouldn't start but with the assistance of one of the hotel assistants we were able to drive over to Robert's house. Took a little time for Blake to warm up to us but a trip to the playground helps. A delicious lunch at Bollywood and dessert at Salt and Straw! Then we had a 3 hour drive to Bend. Gorgeous scenery driving from tall forests, around Mt. Hood, to the drier, warm flat area near the Cascade Mountains. Met up with our friends and enjoyed dinner in Bend by the Deschutes River.Læs mere

    What an amazing first day with Backroads in Oregon. Started in Bend with group orientation. Shuttled to Smith Rock State Park where we had a quick hike, snack and then on our bikes for a 16 mile ride to lunch at an Alpaca Farm. Delicious lunch with local fresh food. Learned about Alpacas and of course got some yarn. Afternoon ride was 26 miles through beautiful scenery with the Three Sister mountains always in the background. Arrived at our beautiful accommodations for 2 nights at 5 Pines Lodge. We have a sweet cabin in the woods. Shuttled to dinner at a local farm and learned how hard it is to grow food in Oregon d/t a short season and water rights. Wonderful meal finished our day.Læs mere

    Another great day with Backroads. Bike trip left from our cabin and went across the McKenzie Pass. Total 40 mile trip. First half was climbing up the mountains with a very barren, lava rocked landscape. Got to the top and had some great views of 3 Sisters, Mt Hood and Mt Jefferson. As soon as we began our descent, we were plagued by a swarm of small butterflies which were annoying when they ran into your face! The landscape changed dramatically which is the "rain shadow" effect. Tall Ponderosa pines, cool, shady. We rode down for 20 miles to our lunch at a hot springs. After an excellent lunch, we enjoyed the pool where the spring water was piped in and then a very quick dip in the 38 degree water of the McKenzie River. Back to Sisters for a nice pizza dinner. Oh, and we found out the faucet for the bathtub was in the ceilingLæs mere

    Left Sisters, sadly-such lovely accommodations. FYI-Pondersosa Pines smell like caramel and vanilla!! Shuttle 25 minutes to do Tumelo Loop, 20 miles-and then had lunch at Bite-a Food Truck lot. Then did another 15 mile out and back extra ride ending into a 10 mile coast into charming Bend. Our hotel, The Oxford, is so nice!! Had an exceptional meal at Bar RBC where we feasted as a group on amazing treats-best things were the Wagyu Beef (melt in your mouth) and the Panna Cotta. Thanks Backroads!!Læs mere

    2nd day in Bend. Drove to our start point in the Cascade Lake Area. Was anticipating a hard, steep ride but had a relatively do-able ride. Rode past a few calm, beautiful lakes-one named Devil Lake hence the costume on our guide Rueben. Had a fun downhill section-cruising around 32 miles per hour. Excellent Cardomom bread from a local bakery. Rode past Mt. Bachelor Ski area. Coasted into Bend and had another food truck lunch at a neat brewery. Then did a tube float on the Deshutes which was fantastic! Thai for dinner. On to Crater Lake tomorrowLæs mere

    Left Bend and drove 2 hours to Crater Lake. Had a variety of bike route choices but since we are #Ordersstrong we chose the 38 mile route despite hail, rain and cold. Our motto is Be Here Now!! Staying at the Crater Lake Lodge which is a time capsule-70's wall paper in the room-but what a view!!!! Nice dinner with the group! Last day tomorrow.Læs mere

    Last day! Woke up to a serene sunrise. Quiet, peaceful. Went on a 1.5 mile hike up to a great look out over the lake. Everywhere you looked was a beautiful site!! Checked out of the lodge and had a delicious picnic overlooking the lake. Backroads knows good food!!! Drove back to Bend and said good bye to the group except for Martha and Michael. Staying in a very eclectic place in down town Bend-McMenamins Old St. Francis School. We enjoyed their soaking pool and Speakeasy. Easy walk to dinner. Back to East Coast tomorrowLæs mere
