    Vernazza, Italy

    We took a short, but expensive, train to get here and enjoyed meandering around the town which is part of Cinque Terre (5 towns) as a famous part of the Italian coast. The views were stunning, and we explored a small church, the castle, and the sea front before getting a snack for lunch at a nearby focacceria.

    I was still feeling a bit under the weather but we were enjoying the atmosphere of the town so we found a shaded spot to sit and do some planning while we were here.    Les mer

    Staglieno Cimitero Monumentale, Genoa

    A stunning beautiful cemetery just outside the centre of Genoa. It was HUGE as well, and with the weather still hot and insects starting to descend we couldn't explore all of it unfortunately.

    As we wandered around each statue or monument seemed to be competing with the previous to be more artistic, or elegant, or thought provoking - which has resulted in a beautiful area.Les mer

    Genoa, Italy

    Although we only had a short amount of time in Genoa we really enjoyed exploring the city. The cathedral was stunning and we happened to be there during a mass too. We got to walk around the streets of the old town while looking for a restaurant, where Luke got to try pesto (best pesto he's ever had!).Les mer

    Triora, Italy

    The cutest of towns, perched high up in the edge of the Alps. It was a bit of a mission on the bus to get up here but was well worth it, the views were amazing!

    The cobbled streets don't feel like they have changed in years, it was like stepping back in time while wandering around. There was only two restaurants but both amazing, plus there was a famous bakery with fantastic foccacia and the cutest shop selling produce and sauces etc. We ate very well while here!

    The town is famous in Italy for being the place of the last witch trials, which is what drew us to visiting, but its so much more than that.    Les mer

    Musuem, Triora, Italy

    There were two musuems in Triora, and we decided to go for the cheaper one obviously! This was fun to look around, although all in Italian so it was hard to learn much.

    There was information about life in Triora in the past, as well as some impressive neolithic archaeological finds from the area. The main draw is the witches though, and they played into this with lots of witchy memorabilia. There was some information about the actual trials too, with mannequins representing the people involved. I would have liked there to have been more facts regarding the events though, but this could have been because not much information actually remains.Les mer

    Chiesa di San Bernardino, Triora, Italy

    We were told by our hosts that this small church had only just been renovated and opened to the public, so we were lucky to be able to see inside. The opening hours were also surprisingly short so we were happy we were able to visit quite easily.

    The building itself was quite an unusual design, with doors at the side as well as the front. The inside had been beautifully decorated with murals around every wall, but they had been worn away or bleached by the sun.

    The views outside were outstanding, as you would expect with Triora, although quite low compared to the rest of the town it was still perched high up in the mountains.    Les mer

    Dolceaqua, Italy

    It took us far too long to get here, considering what a short distance from Triora it was. Originally we were going to stay in Dolceaqua and do a day trip to Triora, at least we know know that that would have been near impossible!

    Although the small streets were reminiscent of Triora, the rest of the town was completely different. Although still beautiful views across the valley, it was the river, castle and bridge that I loved. We were able to cook in our apartment so made the most of this to save some money, and spent our time enjoying wandering the streets of Dolceaqua and people watching while sat by the river.     Monte Carlo, Monaco

    A quick hop and a jump from our accommodation in Menton and we were in Monaco. The weather had got even hotter here, so we ambled around and tried not to drink too much water after paying €8 for two bottles.

    The casino was as extravagant as expected, although we were surprised we were able to enter the lobby without paying!

    We were able to see part of the iconic track, as well as some sculptures commemorating iconic moments.    Les mer

    Montpellier, France

    We booked accommodation in Montpellier to have a bit of a rest after quite a few hectic days travelling. We did manage to slow down while here, but this was also due to the fact it was so hot (yet again) and our apartment didn't have aircon. Relying on the open window/double doors to cool the apartment down, we hid from the sun as much as possible!

    There wasn't too much to see in Montpellier but we still enjoyed what we managed to see, the unusual architecture of the Cathedral stands out but the Arc de Triomphe and Botanical Gardens were very pretty.

    All in all, a lovely city on our visit although if we came again we'd like it to be cooler!    Les mer

    Carcassonne, France

    What an entrance into Carcassonne!

    We didn't realise when we booked the accommodation that it was Bastille Day, and that there are huge celebrations in Carcassonne every year. We were unceremoniously dumped from the flixbus outside of the centre as they were also seemingly unaware of the celebrations, and consequent road closures. We had a 20 minute walk over to our apartment, through throngs of people enjoying the atmosphere and getting ready for the evening fireworks.

    We managed to get to our apartment, find food from a takeaway ready to watch the Spain v England euros match, settle down with bad Internet connection with the game till we had to leave to watch the show. We were late setting off as the street lights were turned off as we got closer, then were able to see the sky light up with a bang (in Asia this would have been a thunderstorm!).

    We found a good position, and stood in amazement at the fireworks show which followed. Got to be the best fireworks we've ever seen, there was even a half time break where the castle was lit with red lights before the fireworks started back bigger and better than before.

    The town was decorated with huge string balls and colourful garlands too - not sure if this is to do with Bastille Day or if it's just normal!    Les mer

    Cité de Carcassonne, France

    We visited the castle area numerous times during our visit, and loved wandering around the small streets exploring the town. We went into the castle area too, and walked along the rampants - just when we thought views couldn't get any better this proved us wrong!

    The castle was straight out of a fairytale, or an popular board game, and it truly lived up to expectations in the best kinda way. It was most magical for me with the setting sun lighting up the stone to a fairy red on our last day...    Les mer

    Cathedral Saint-Michel, Carcassonne

    Cathedral close to our accommodation, it was only open for a few short hours but thankfully we managed to visit.

    The interior was very different to the cathedrals we are used to, with huge pendant cross lights which added a modern touch but still somehow on keeping. The walls were decorated with geometrical patterns in bright colours which reminded me of churches we had seen in the Phillipines, whereas Luke found in reminiscent of Spanish decor.Les mer

    Andorra la Vella, Andorra

    18.–20. jul. 2024, Andorra ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    A place that Luke really wanted to see, that surprised us both! A lovely city which had a good balance of old and new, with lots of art and architecture to enjoy as well. The shops and restaurants were busy with tourists enjoying the area, especially as its a tax haven.

    We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the city, and eating some good food! Surprising amount of Japanese restaurants, which was useful to get something vegetarian, but we also managed to get tapas as well to prepare us for Spain.    Les mer

    Pont de la Margineda, Andorra La Vella

    After visiting the church we made our way to this small bridge, the oldest in Andorra. Very adorable little bridge which was quiet when we arrived but got busy with other tourists while we were there. Situated close to the road running in and out of the city, but for some reason there wasn't a bus we could get back!Les mer

    Zaragoza, Spain

    A city I had never heard of before our trip, but was well worth visiting. On the day we arrived temperatures were peaking at 40° so we couldn't do much apart from survive. Thankfully the next day was far cooler, as the temperatures had been replaced by a strong wind!

    We enjoyed walking around the city, seeing the various beautiful churches, and snacking on empanadas and pintxo's.    Les mer

    Aljafería Palace, Zaragoza, Spain

    I loved exploring this Islamic Palace, especially as the temperatures had dropped significantly so it was actually pleasant to be wandering around. I spent most of my time enjoying taking pictures of the gorgeous building, and not reading any of the information though!

    We were surprised that to see that this is still used as seat of the Aragonese Parliment too.    Les mer

    Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta,Zaragoza

    Really enjoyable musuem, unfortunately we only had an hour there before it closed. Half of the area is the excavated remains of the roman forum, while the other half taught you about daily life in Caesaraugusta (what is now Zaragoza) showing remains of lead pipes and the drainage system, descriptions of the market, and information about social hierarchy.

    There was an interesting film too, from the perspective of the river which runs through Zaragoza. Not sure if it was the translation or the actual script but we were amused when the river said it enjoyed watching the city grow, and was impressed by human ingenuity!    Les mer

    Donostia - San Sebastian, Spain

    We had San Sebastian on our list of destinations mostly due to the food scene. The pintxos and tapas were fun to snack on as we wandered around the old town but the actual city was great fun too!

    I enjoyed a late morning swim in the sea, getting soaked by some big waves, and we also took a walk by the beach to reach the Mount Igueldo funicular.Les mer
