    Travel and arrival

    I flew out of Perth on June 12th on Emirates, to Dubai, arriving early the following morning. Exited the terminal to be forcibly reminded of the brutality of the summer humidity - like a brick wall!

    I was staying with Charlie Hermon and it was good to catch upon with him. That was a chill day as I had had a Covid booster and and a flu shot the day before and I was feeling a bit shabby. Came good in the evening and we had dinner at the Marriott hotel with a bunch of ex EK pilots now doing contract simulator work with the old employer. Personally, very glad not to be climbing into a simulator at 2am or something similar!

    Following evening caught up with my ballooning buddies Renee and Mike Howard for dinner at a steak house. Great to catch up with them again. Dinner and other things showed how expensive Dubai has become. And the building and development is back to the crazy days again.

    On Thursday morning, June 15th, Charlie and I caught the Emirates flight to Chicago. A long one, 14 hours 25 minutes flying time. But pretty darn comfortable at the pointy end.

    A long taxi in of 45 minutes, our gate was then occupied by a delayed departing aircraft and then a big and very slow immigration queue, all compounded, resulting in me missing my connection to Appleton (ATW). A four hour wait in the terminal for the next and only remaining flight, followed by a 35 minute flight time and I made it to Appleton at 10pm. Charlie was waiting for me in the terminal, as he had caught a United flight up, whereas I was travelling on American Airlines. Uber Otte (Juergen) was waiting in the pick up zone with his car and 30 minutes later we were ensconced in Winneconne. All in all, 24 hours “on the road”. Managed to get a pretty good nights sleep, considering the 9 hour time zone difference from Dubai, and the long day it had been.    Read more

    June 16th, Friday. Preparation day.

    Amy had arranged the wedding and pulled everything together herself, ably assisted by her “deputy” Juergen.

    So a bunch of us spent a good part of the day helping out. Moving stuff off the pool deck area, setting up the DJ’s marque, hanging lighting, assembling the dance floor and constructing the “Oshkosh Harbour Bridge” as we christened the walkway across the pool.

    Amy had everything nailed down to the finest detail. Later in the afternoon we went out on their boat for a pre sundowner for and hour or so. Long days here, It’s light before 5 am and it does not get dark till well after 9 pm.    Read more

    The BIG day!

    June 17th, Saturday. The BIG day!

    Helped out in the morning with some final preparations, shucked a couple of hundred oysters in the afternoon, and then it was showtime at 6 pm.

    The ceremony took place pool side with over a hundred guests in attendance. It was a perfect day in every sense. The weather could not have been better, about 25 deg C, not a cloud in the sky and just a light drifting breeze. Amy and the whole bridal party looked stunning, and in a lovely touch Juergen was escorted by not a best man but his best lady, Kirst, his daughter.

    The ceremony was very touching and sincere in all regards, but still light hearted and fun.

    Drinks and light food catering were on the lawn, again all organised by Amy, along with big contributions, prep wise, from family and friends. For example the smoked salmon was prepared by Brian, Amy’s uncle, who brined and smoked it himself, and it was to die for.

    We sat at a table along with our very good friends from Aspen, Nancy and Joe, and Loyda and Joven, Amy and Juergs’ neighbours, with whom Charlie and I were staying with for the week. Lovely company indeed.

    The dance floor got put to very good use, and Amy and Juergs of course mingled with the crowd all night, and the bridal dance was part of all that. The DJ finished up at 11 pm and people dispersed. The bar was was still open, so the younger crew kicked on till about 1 am.

    All in all a fabulous day, one of the best weddings I have been to for sure.    Read more

    The day after!

    June 18th, Sunday. The day after.

    Awoke relatively early, and had a cooked breakfast out on the patio, compliments of Loyda and Joven. They are such hospitable hosts to us!

    Then a bunch of us got stuck into tidying up the back garden and pool area, and it was pretty much restored to pre event status by the time Amy and Juergs returned latter morning. They had spent the night over at Appleton as they had a houseful of guests.

    For lunch Amy and Juergs very generously took about 30 or more of us to lunch at their favourite restaurant, Field and Fire. The food was delicious and the company great. Again sat with Nancy snd Joe, particularly as they departed after the meal to head back to Aspen via Milwaukee. I will probably catch up with them again in February, during the annual ski pilgrimage.    Read more

    Lets Go Fly!

    June 19th, Sunday. Let’s Go Fly!

    Charlie and I had breakfast with Loyda and Joven and then several of us went for a run on the lake in the boat, primarily to give Elke, Kirst and Mick’s daughter (and Juerg’s granddaughter) a final boat ride. To everyone’s surprise she caught a very good sized fish on her own pink fishing rod.

    Kirst, Mick and Elka departed for Milwaukee, bound for New York and shortly thereafter Melbourne, soon to be their new home after Kirst serving for the Australian Government at the United Nations for the past 4 years.

    Juergs took Charlie and myself for a fly in his home built aircraft that he has been constructing for the last 15 years plus. It’s a Glassair Sportsman, tail drager. about the size of a Cessna 172, but is registered in the Experimental category. Beautiful aircraft, fabulous colour scheme and very sophisticated avionics systems. It is capable of auto landing, amazing. We did a flight of about 25 minutes from Oshkosh out over the lakes and overflew their house. Great to see it all from the air.

    After closing the hanger doors we went to the EAA aviation museum at Oshkosh airport. It is an amazing display of the history of aviation. From replicas of the Wright Brothers Flyer and Bleriot’s cross English Channel aircraft thru to Paul Allen’s Space Ship One and Dick and Burt Rutan’s Voyager. The whole spectrum of the history of aviation in fact. We spent about an hour there but could have spent the best part of a day. Personally, hopefully I will be back in July 2024 for the Oshkosh air show which goes for a week, when about 10,000 or more private aircraft fly in for for the biggest week in aviation globally. Oshkosh is the busiest airport in the world for that week!

    Back home for a LLD - a little lie down. Then out onto the lake for sundowners, back to Chez Otte and Pirie Pirie Prawns and salad, dining out poolside on a perfect evening. Weather has been amazing. No wind to speak of, just light breezes, not a cloud seen yet, and temperatures in the upper 20’s and cool evenings. Perfect. And the lakeside so green.    Read more

    And another cruisy day!

    June 21st. Wednesday.

    And another cruisy day! Amy took me for a run across the lake on their jet ski to Bird Island and up the Fox River. The island is a sanctuary for migrating and breeding pelicans that fly south in the winter. Can’t blame them. Winters are somewhat savage here, with the lake freezing over. And verdant green and not much habitation on the part of the Fox River we travelled up.

    In the evening we drove to Appleton and had dinner at Basil Cafe. It is a favourite restaurant of Loyda and Joven, our hosts. It was my thank you for their hosting us so generously for the week. A mix of Thai and Vietnamese. Food was excellent, as was witnessed by the fact that the restaurant was full. A very pleasant evening.    Read more

    Departure Day!

    June 22nd. Thursday. Departure Day!

    A call was made after breakfast to go to Wolf River Tubing. About a 30 minute drive from Butte de Morts, sign up, grab an inflated tube, and another for the cooler box, then a 5 minute ride in a bus, and jump into the river. The water was only about half a metre deep generally with scattered small boulders and moving at a leisurely pace. We drifted down stream for a couple of hours, drank some bevs, and listened to DJ Joven, with a musical selection on his iPhone. Simple pleasures, and a bunch of fun.

    Back to Chez Otte and Chez Loria, packed my bags and off to Appleton Airport. A nice regional airport, easy going staff and not the hassle of places like O’Hare or LA. It is also a fitment and service centre for Gulfstream Corporation. Dozens and dozens of corporate aircraft in stages of fit out and service. Impressive.

    Climbed aboard the CRJ regional jet, which seats about 50 passengers. Rather cramped, I could not stand upright in it, but the legroom was fine. Sure makes the A380 pretty darn special!    Read more

    Dubai & Perth.

    June 23 - 26. Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday.

    Dubai & Perth.

    Because of a ticketing issue instead of spending 30 hours in Dubai I ended “in transit” for 3 days. Emirates flights in and out of Australia currently chock a block, rather hard for staff travellers! But it is a very nice benefit, all the same, as a result over of four decades in the industry.

    As a consequence of the delay I had the evening before I left at a drinks and dinner party with some friends and old acquaintances, which was a very pleasurable bonus.

    Left Dubai where the temperature had been 43 deg and extremely humid to arrive in Perth in the evening and it was 6 deg. And then 1 deg overnight. A tad chilly, but beautiful clear, calm and sunny days to follow.

    Nice to be home, but it had been a fabulous wedding and a great time socially surrounding it.

    Thanks so much to Amy and Juergs for the invite, hosting an amazing event and for entertaining a big bunch of us for near on a week. You guys are the best!
    And very hearty thanks to Loyda and Joven for hosting Charlie and myself. Awesome, so appreciative of your hospitality and friendship.
