    Lord Howe Island & Sydney November 2018

    And so we have found paradise! What a place, I had forgotten how picturesque this place is, just so beautiful, our accomodation is very comfortable and we have just staggered back from dinner after a number of pre dinner cocktails and wine. The food here is excellent and I don't think we will be wanting for anything. We did a bit of exploring in the afternoon and then went down to Old Settlement Beach where I got to swim with some turtles! Seriously, it just blew me away, just a fantastic experience. I am all prepared for tomorrow as I am off to climb Mt Gower , an 8 hour trek. Wish me luck! Weno is going to check out the beach scene while I am gone.Læs mere

    Today was my birthday treat, climbing Mt Gower, 8 hours of up and down. It is a very tough walk and I feel very privileged to have been able to do it. It is one of only three cloud forests in Australia. The other two are on the highest mountains in Nth Qld. Suffice to say I am feeling a bit knackered tonight. It really was amazing, I got to see a whole lot of rare plants that grow nowhere else in the world except on Lord Howe Island, such as the pumpkin tree it's nearest relative is the African violet way over in Equitorial Africa! Go figure. I also got to see the Lord Howe Island Woodhen a bird virtually brought back from near extinction and now thriving. Weno enjoyed her day walking around the township and spending some time on the beach. All in all a great dayLæs mere

    Well the weather has certainly taken a turn for the worse here. Torrential rain overnight with showers on and off during the day. We ventured out this morning and walked over to the eastern side of the island ( the bit that faces New Zealand ). While being quite overcast it is not cold, we walked over to a place called Middle Beach, it is quite different to the western side which is protected by the coral reef. This side is exposed to the full fury of the ocean and is very rugged. Strolled back for lunch then off for a massage to ease my aching muscles and a relaxing afternoon.Læs mere

    We woke up to blue skies this morning and decided we would do some kayaking and maybe snorkelling later. Heading down to the hire place you could see the dust haze across the mountains from the dust storms that hit Sydney yesterday, the dust haze persisted for most of the morning. It was a big day for Weno today as she tried out kayaking and later went snorkelling as well. We hired a double kayak and went for a spin down the lagoon towards the airport (we were talking to some people at dinner who had arrived today and they had flown over a double kayak on landing, that was us!) Wendy did really well and when we got back I went out in a single kayak for a bit of a spin by myself. After lunch we went back down to the lagoon and I showed Weno how to snorkel. She really enjoyed it ( except when I touched her leg oops!) we saw some coral, lots of different fish and some Nudibrachs, finished the day with a bit of sun backing.Læs mere

    The morning started off stormy and our fishing trip was cancelled due to the rough weather, 3-4 metre swell offshore, had a slow start then went out with the umbrella and watched the supply boat being unloaded. This ship comes over from Port Macquarie about every two weeks and brings a vast assortment of thing that the islanders need /want / wish for. The weather cleared enough to go walking so we did some forest walking and then headed done to Neds Beach. This area was quite popular today as it was out of the wind. This is the beach where the fish are fed and there are stacks of them in the water! There was also a big Tern rookery in the sand dunes behind the beach. Spent a bit of time on the beach in the afternoon then back for happy hour.Læs mere

    We had torrential rain overnight but woke up to reasonably clear skies. We took ourselves for a walk along the foreshore of the lagoon this morning, then when we got back to our room we packed our backpacks with lunch and snorkelling gear and did the walk over to North Bay. This walk is pretty much straight up and then straight down to the beach at North Bay. We had lunch and I then had a quick snorkel, saw some turtles but the visibility was not very good. The weather turned for the worse as we got back and there was some heavy rain, cleared quickly and I was able to go down to Old Settlement Beach and do some more snorkelling there out to a spot called Sylphs hole. A great spot, so many different fish and corals it was just amazing! Glad I got to do it. All in all a good day.Læs mere

    Was a very windy day with occasional squalls on the island thus curtailing most activities. We did get a bit of walking in and the afternoon was spent over at Neds beach which was a bit protected from the weather. Fish feeding was the activity of the day over there. I was lucky enough to get a snorkel in at about 7.30am down at Old Settlement beach before the weather changed. The fish life on the reef here is just amazing, huge variety and sizes. There were some pretty big fish down there up to a metre in size. The iridescent colours of the coral was also pretty special and to be able to swim in such a healthy environment is a real privilege with memories we will treasure forever.Læs mere

    Today was our last day on Lord Howe Island. We have has such a great time in this magic place it makes it very hard to leave. We woke to a fine day and after breakfast we went over to Neds beach and spent the morning snorkelling which again is just so amazing. It really is a fantastic reef system on this Island. We flew out in the afternoon farewelling our island paradise and arriving in Sydney to the chaos and mayhem of a big city. We met up with John and Sharon and had dinner at Bennalong restaurant at the Opera House. Very swish and a great evening out.Læs mere

    Well what a day !!! The weather gods were certainly angry in Sydney, so much rain. Still we managed to get out and about. Spent the morning visiting The Strand Arcade and the Queen Victoria Building. Nothing like a bit of shopping to get away from the weather. Grabbed a cab and headed over to the art gallery of NSW for lunch and a look at some famous Australian paintings and we also looked at the Masters of Modern Art from The Hermitage exhibition while we were there. Pretty amazing. Lunch was pretty special, but we topped the day off by going out to dinner at Bistro Guillaume for som divine French food with John & Sharon. All in all a pretty good day.Læs mere

    What a difference 24 hours make! We woke to dry weather with sunny skies in the afternoon. Started the day with breakfast with John & Sharon then they headed of home and we went walking, first around the Rocks area and then made our way over to Darling Harbour where we went to the Rolling Stones exhibition, it was just fantastic and Weno was in her element. A quick bite of lunch then more walking. We visited the Chinese garden at Darling Harbour the we walked across the city and down to Mrs Macquarie's chair and around to the Opera House for some happy hour drinks, the back to hotel for some Thai and bed!!! It was a big day. Tomorrow we head home so this is the last post for this blog.Læs mere
