  • Day 1 of being lazy 😀

    July 7, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We walked Tessa to kinda and then took Paulie on a walk around Hittfeld.
I honestly love how European houses are so different with the A frame style roofs,
The shop fronts are so quiant with planter boxes on the walls with beautiful flowers... which I didn't get photos of cause I was immersed in the town and too busy taking and watching cars driving straight at me (for a split second thinking they're on the wrong side of the road.... that takes some getting used to haha).Read more

  • Lüneburg

    July 11, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Lüneburg has a beautiful medieval feel to it, lots of red brick buildings.
Lüneburg was know for the underground salt and the saltworks export for over 1000 years.

Day of shopping, checked out the Gothic style Basilica of St Nicolai, which was built between 1407 and 1440, which is the smallest of three in Lüneburg but impressive none the least.

Also passed the oldest Brewery in Lüneburg built in 1517.

Then a relaxing lunch by the river and of course checked out the supermarket and as an Aussie does.... be amazed by the amount of alcohol you can pick up whilst getting your bread and milk.

  • Buxtehude

    July 13, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Buxtehude is on the Este River in Northern Germany, belonging to the district of Stade in Lower Saxony.

In 1945 the population grew to 14,000. Hamburg was in ruins from being bombed during the war and people fled to the suburbs and surrounding towns and villages one being Buxtehude. In 1958 Buxtehude became part of the plan for the reconstruction of Hamburg after the war and heavily funded by the government.

Again this town is very much like Lüneburg with the red brick and Gothis style. The pictures are from the 'old town'.

  • Buxtehude

    July 13, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Buxtehude is sometimes called the "Fairytale Capital of the World," The tale of "The Hare and the Hedgehog" by the Brothers Grimm is set in this town. They have adopted the theme which is fun and intriguing finding all the Hare and Hedgehog motifs/statues.

This city also had Witch trials between 1540 and 1644. If you zoom in on the plaque their names are listed.

  • Middelfart

    July 14, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Denmark has beautiful rolling countryside, and predominantly all country with cottage style homes scattered through.

We stopped in at Middelfart (meaning Middle Way) for a walk break on our way to Copenhagen, the town buildings have a similar feel to Germany.
Was originally known as Mæthælfar 1231, the town is located on the narrowest point of the Little Belt ( as explained to me Little bridge, Little belt) .

The 13th century they were known for fishing porpoises, the 16th century they had increased cattle trade and after the Swedish wars in the 17th century the town trade suffered.
The 19th century, 1836 they established their own harbour and started trading the agriculture locally grown.
The 20th century, when the bridge was built and increased the population and the town expanded incorporating close by towns.

The church in town and close to the water is called St Nicholas.... is anyone seeing a pattern with the names..... 🤔🤪

  • Copenhagen - History

    July 15, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

So I like to research the areas I've been to so here's some info on Copenhagen, you can skip to the photo's if wish, this one is lengthy 😉

Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital is coastal which is linked to Malmo in southern Sweden by the Öresund Bridge. The port was originally fished for Herring, then served as a naval port (which is still there but on the opposite side so it isn't in front of the Royal Palace) and now mainly used by sail boats and cruise ships.

The original name was Kaupmannahofn, from old Norse meaning merchants harbour. Over time between the Danish, Germans, Swedish, Icelandic and the English is slowly changed, the Latin caupo meaning tradesman.

Archaeological finds suggest human settlement origins dating back to the 11th century (Stone Age) and also believed that the town itself dates back to the Viking Age.

The city's historic center, contains Frederiksstaden, an 18th-century rococo district, the royal family (yes our Princess Mary) lives in Amalienborg Palace, there are four buildings in a circle, Queen Margareth Lycra in one and Mary and Frederick another.
Nearby is Christiansborg Palace and the Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle, surrounded by beautiful lawn and gardens.
There are a number of bridges connecting the various districts, the city is characterised by parks, promenades and canals.

  • Copenhagen

    July 15, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

We walked 17km on Saturday around Copenhagen and we included a canal tour.... Steffi later shared the only way to stop me was to say 'oh look there's a bar, let's have a drink' haha. Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, I didn't put up a fight haha

It is quite common for people to jump into port and swim the edges with ladders to get out, is also common and acceptable for people to go naked for a impromptu swim. There are multiple sunbathing spots around the city on the canal edges.

The first picture was at one of drink locations and the second picture is standing on a bridge looking back at it, so you can see the view was not half bad, ok so full disclosure, we had two drinks and a hot dog haha coz we didn't want to leave it plus Steffi didn't want to walk but I think we did another 10km after that haha

The Danes are very health conscious so they ride everywhere, the bikes have there own specific lane. There are more bikes than cars, I'm the last picture there were multiple two tier bike racks, there were thousands of bikes everywhere.

  • Hamburg. Day 1

    July 17, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, resides between the River Alster and the River Elbe. Germany is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It's crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland.

Hamburg's rivers and canals are crossed by around 2,500 bridges, making it the city with the highest number of bridges in Europe.

The name Hamburg comes from the first permanent building on the site, a castle which the Emperor Charlemagne ordered constructed in AD 808. The original name Hammaburg, burg meaning castle or fort. The origin of the Hamma term remains uncertain.

We saw the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (views were amazing), the Port of Hamburg, Speicherstadt, Alter Elbtunnel, St Paulie Piers, St Nikolai Church ( just from the outside - we've seen a lot of churches), Cap San Diago, Pont De Köhlbrand....

It was a big day through bouts of wind and rain, kinda reminded me of the first time I was here haha not quite as cold though 😅
