  • Bothwell

    May 7, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

When we woke up this morning we found that we had a problem with the diesel heater in that it wouldn’t heat up and as it got down to 3degs last night and was only going to get up to 12 during the day we decided to go see those old buildings then move on to a caravan park so that we could use the reverse cycle aircon to heat us up.
So we have moved onto to Bothwell which also happens to have the Australian museum of golf in its Information centre.

  • Bothwell day 2

    May 8, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We visited the golf museum which was interesting there was memorabilia from the start of golf in Australia and to recent events like Adam Scott Masters victory but we only took a few photos.
Then when we got back to the van we realised that the aircon was not heating so I had to drive to the nearest (55km) Kmart to buy a fan heater .Read more

  • Bothwell day 3

    May 9, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We have decided that as we are only 60kms from Hobart we will drive there to visit the Historical Cascades Women’s Factory, this place has been semi restored and set up to show the conditions that the convict women had to endure. They were kept in very harsh conditions worked for 12 hours per day fed a very poor diet and punished for the slightest mistakes, it they were good and worked hard they were deemed suitable for being loaned out to settlers as free labour but were often raped by their new masters and when they fell pregnant were sent back to the Factory to be punished for not being able to work, which entailed spending time in solitary confinement this also was the punishment for any type of sickness, if they couldn’t work then it was off to the cells.
The only original building is the matrons house all the rest were destroyed during a bushfire.
The buildings have not been rebuilt but the various areas have been represented by using floor markings and a couple metal structures to indicate the sizes ie the cells and the toilet.
All in all it was a very enlightening day today.

  • Miena Dam lookout

    May 10, 2019 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Next up was the dam lookout, although there was a very heavy mist about which limited the distance we could see. The drive through the highlands was cool like 5degs and wet but very picturesque. We passed through some of the areas that were burned out by the recent bushfires we also saw that the water in this area just runs off the ground probably because there is little soil to soak it up you can see it rushing off in our photos and video but even with all this water the dam level is quite low.
We were at one time following a truck n trailer who we are thankful that we were not coming towards as he was crossing over to the opposite of the road to take left hand turns. (Watch video).

  • Deloraine Apex Caravan park

    May 10, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

We are now in Deloraine a nice small old town on the Meander river.
The caravan van park is small but stretches along the riverbank. We are in a park so that we have power for the heater, I think the diesel heaters problem is dirty fuel but I need time to drain and flush its tank to be sure.
The town has a lot of artwork on display which we may get photos of tomorrow.
For dinner we had fish n chips and the size of the fish was huge and tasted awesome.

  • Deloraine day 2

    May 11, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We had a walk around town took some photos of the artworks then did some shopping and when we got back I tried to clean out the Diesel heaters tank which proved harder than I anticipated, for some reason the bottom of the tank was covered in rubbish which probably came from either dirty diesel or red dirt managing to get in. After breaking up the residual I tried flushing it out using kero which only partially worked so I then stuffed an old T-shirt inside to wipe out the rest, next I will try taking out the inline filter to see if it is blocked up, because until we get the diesel heater working again we will have to stay in caravan parks due to the low overnight temperatures.Read more

  • The Don Railway museum

    May 13, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We drove up to Devonport to check how long it would take us to get to the ferry terminal (about 15 minutes) so while we were up that way we visited the railway museum that we had seen 10 weeks ago when we arrived in Tasmania.
The train service doesn’t run on Monday and Tuesdays which is a pity but we had fun looking around the old trains with Kay reminiscing of the days she used to ride the steam trains to school.

  • Devonport The Spirit of Tasmania II

    May 15, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Well we started our Tasmanian adventure by having bacon and eggs for breakfast in the Bunnings carpark and so now we have finished it off by having lunch (cheeseburger and fries) in the same carpark.

  • Stawell

    May 16, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After a reasonably smooth voyage across the Bass Strait we disembarked from the Spirit of Tasmania. As soon as we could we stopped to give the pups a toilet break as they had been cooped up in their crate for 13 hours.
After travelling across Melbourne we stopped for breakfast in a service area (eggs on toast with coffee). Then we heeded off up the M8/A8 towards South Australia, we have booked in for a couple of nights at the Stawell Grampians Gate caravan park, we will get some laundry done and have a good sleep tonight, although we had a nice cabin which was a lot better than the recliner seats on the way over it was still only a sporadic sleep leaving us feeling drained.
And after 235kms we will be happy to get to bed tonight.

  • Nhill Aerodrome

    May 18, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We fuelled up in Stawell then set off East towards South Australia, after passing a few places that seemed to look familiar (like the big Koala) we realised that we had travelled this way last year during our lap of Australia, it was when we were travelling between Colac and Mildura but when we reached Horsham we turned left towards Nhill and started breaking new ground for us again.
We arrived at Nhill and have set up at the RV park next to the old aerodrome, it used to be a flight training school during WWII now its a small museum and workshop for restoring old aircrafts.
Kay found some hats to try on and ended up buying one for here next open cockpit journey.

Went to the local IGA and also had a look around town which didn’t take up too much time as it is a small outback town.
Watching the sun setting as the moon was rising was good the moon was so large and a bright orange colour which is the reflection of the sunset I suppose.Read more

  • Kiki rest area

    May 20, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We are now in South Australia which means we have crossed into a different time zone only 2.5 hrs ahead of Perth now. We have been travelling along the Dukes Hwy passing through some colourful small towns but as we didn’t stop we missed taking photos.
Where we are now is in between the hwy and the rail track so Kay is hoping to see some trains go bye.

  • Adelaide

    May 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We set out this morning heading for Mt Barker which is on the southern outskirts of Adelaide, but we got the so early that we decided to keep on moving! We managed to get around Adelaide without to much of a hassle by setting the sat navigation for Port Wakefield that took us on an inner ring road bypassing the city centre. The road into Adelaide comes down from the hills via a very steep descent I had to put it into manual to use the low gears to slow us down or the brakes would have been smoking again.
We passed a fair bit or art work on the way in and again on the way out.

  • Lochiel

    May 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We stopped at Port Wakefield to eat some lunch sandwiches which I had purchased when getting fuel, sorry to say Kay didn’t enjoy hers as she thought it was a bit like plastic I enjoyed mine but maybe I should have got a sausage roll for Kay instead. We saw some more art as we travelled onto till we arrived here at Lochiel, we are parked in a rest area opposite the Bumbunga lake.Read more

  • Cowell

    May 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

As we left Lochiel we got another look at the Nessie sunning herself on the beach and she did look splendid.
We had a good drive ahead of us as we were aiming to pass Port Perie pass Port Augusta as well as Whyalla heading for Cowell, we were moving along ok until we came up behind a wide load (no not Kim Kardashian’s rear-end but nearly as wide) it was a bulldozer on a flatbed 5.5mts wide well it took about 30 kms before we had our turn to get passed it, well the relief was short lived as 40 kms up the road it was a real performance to pass its twin.
When we got to Cowell, Kay decided that the 2 caravan parks here are not close enough to the beach 🏖 (Kay wants to stay somewhere close to the sea to relax for a week) so we moved to the Lions club rest area for the night and will move on tomorrow to Arno Bay which is about 50kms further down the road.
