  • Petal Point Cape Portland

    16 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We arrived here after a 25km of gravel road (which was very good no ruts from grader) which we were able to drive at around 60kph.
There is a wind farm close bye so we expect its going to get a bit blowy later. There are only 4 other set ups here but we can’t see them unless we go out looking as there are about 5 or 6 different areas where you can set up your camp, we have parked in what’s named as the village green as it’s the easiest to get in and out of. • Legerwood

    20 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We decided to move on from Petal Point as the village green camping area was filling up, there were a few couples sleeping in swags, a couple of tents, 3 old caravans and 4 boats (1 was quite large) along with kids and dogs, so the atmosphere had changed, the serenity of a camp we had all to ourselves looking out over the ocean had gone, but we had that experience for the previous 3 days which was great so we are moving before the memories are spoiled.
We were going to stop at Derby but when we arrived we realised that this was not going to happen due to the Easter weekend, Derby is setting itself up as the mountain bike capital of Tasmania so there were cyclists everywhere which would drive Cher crazy (well she already is that but you know). All the camps and parks seemed to be filled with them (they looked like ants swarming everywhere) so it was not to hard a decision to make on just passing on through and find another camp down the road. There was a nice park in Braxholm but they didn’t allow pets so we only stopped to do some grocery shopping then moved on. We have set up for the night at Legerwood its a small town renowned for it wood carvings which have been done to make use of the old trees which were planted in 1918 as a memorial to those locals that were killed during the 1st world war, these trees which had come to the end of their lives where destined to be ripped out but the locals wanted to preserve the memorial so they had the carvings added to the stumps giving them new life. We see a lot of these around Tasmania, little towns that probably lost half of their young men to the war, planted trees in remembrance and then converting them as the trees begin to die off.

  • Scottsdale lions park

    21 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌫 14 °C

We have arrived at Scottsdale we are in the free camp thanks to the local Lions club, this camp is actually called Scottsdale Northeast park not due to it’s location which is probably more SE of Scottsdale but named after Mr Northeast who’s idea it was to establish a park in this location back in the 1930s (see photos) it looks a bit run down now but that’s what time does to everything and everybody I suppose!
The park was quite full when we got here so we ended up at the top of the park away from most of the others which is good but on a slope that was hard to get the caravan level on which was bad. Then after we had uncoupled the car about 4 caravans pulled out !!! Oh well too late now as I don’t want to hitch up again till it’s time to move on. We can stay here for up to 14 nights but we will probably stay only 3 or 4.

  • Bridport sightseeing

    22 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We were originally meant to take the caravan to Bridport, but decided that we would leave the caravan here at Scottsdale and just explore in the car.
Well its a nice spot and very popular as they have the largest caravan park we have seen in Tasmania, it was stretched along the coastline with 5 seperate entrances to the sites and the park has direct access to the beach.
After we had a good look around we began the trip back but like I have done on numerous occasions now took a wrong turn and we ended up taking 120km to get back versus the 24km it took to get there.
We passed our previous camp at Legerwood and drove through Derby where the mountain bikers were still all over the place.
Tonight is going to be cold 🥶 down to 6c so we are really hoping there are no more problems with the diesel heater otherwise we may stay in bed till noon.

  • Low Head

    26 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

We got back on the road this morning and moved about 80kms up the road to Low Head which is just past George Town on the estuary of the Tamar river as it enters the Bass Straits.
We have booked into a caravan park for the next 4 nights and Kay is already into her 4th load of laundry (I do help by hanging it out on the line, but I think she then sneaks out and rehangs it all anyway).
It is very windy here at the moment and the same is forecast for the next couple of day but we will not let it stop us sightseeing so we will put on some extra clothes and beanies to keep warm. I have had to park the car so that it blocks the wind from blowing the washing line away.
On our trips we have seen lots and lots of people who travel with their pets and I get so frustrated that there are so many owners that think they don’t have to follow the rules ie keep their dog on a leash because they think their dog won’t be happy wearing a leash, But today we came across the worst example of a bad owner, we went to look at a caravan park to see if we wanted to stay and there was a little dog sitting at the gate looking out occasionally barking at people passing by, so we were talking to the park manager and he said that the dog wasn’t his, it had belonged to a holidaymaker who left it behind when they moved on and when the park phoned them to let them know they had forgotten their dog and they said they would come back, but that was over 2 years ago and the dog is still waiting.

  • Georgetown sightseeing

    27 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

We started off today but checking out the towns silo mural which depicts the river and the local events, the weather seems to be getting to it which is not surprising with how windy it is here. Then Kay visited the information bureau before we headed up to the towns look out which gave us a great overview of the river mouth but boy was it windy which made it a very cold experience!! On the way to the look out we saw a flock of peacocks and hens but were unable to get a good photo as they ran off shared (not the like like the tame ones we normally encounter) Czytaj więcej

    28 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We had a lay in today not arising till 9am (a right lazy pair we are becoming) eggs on toast for breakfast then off sightseeing again (its a hard life). We set off for the lighthouse station as they sound the foghorn once a week at 12 noon on a Sunday and amazingly we are here on the right day. The volunteers at the foghorn station were very friendly and informative and carefully made sure that everyone was a safe distance as the horn sounded it’s 136 decibels. Czytaj więcej

    29 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Next we visited the Platypus House where they have 4 rescued Platypus and 3 Echidnas, here you are given a guided tour as they don’t want people especially the small versions hassling the animals and also the male Platypus is venomous with enough to possibly kill a small child.
We had a good time here the Echidnas were very cool running around between our feet.

  • Launceston

    30 kwietnia 2019, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We are now in Launceston staying at Old Mac’s Farm which is an off grid low cost campsite $10 per night no power or amenities but you can refill your tanks for $2 so with power from the sun recharging our batteries we can stay as long as we like and shower every day.
There are lots of baby road runners here which is weird as I thought birds reproduced in spring but obviously I’m wrong.(I just looked it up on Wikipedia and they reckon they lay eggs between July and September but may lay twice if its been a good year).

    3 maja 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

We decided to go up to the Stonesthrow cafe(its on the farm site) for Devonshire scones and coffee. The scones cream and jam were lovely the coffee not the best.
Then we had a look at the animals.
There are more animals than these but I forgot to take photo’s so some of these are of the artworks in Launceston that we took while we were in there doing our voting for the 2019 election.
