Maritimes

Once again the “bubble” is heading off on a new adventure. This time it’s the Atlantic Ocean we will be dipping our feet into. Lue lisää
  • Fundy Parkway

    21. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We expected some rain this morning, so we opted for a short hike to Dickens Falls. The falls are on a small creek in a deep ravine which creates a very lush microclimate. It felt very serene and protected in there.
Before we got back to the car, it started raining. And what rain! The kind that gets your underwear wet! That put a damper on our plans for the rest of the day because we drove the Fundy Parkway which is renowned for its stunning lookouts. Unfortunately, with the heavy fog, we could not see very far, so no view for us! The weather did clear up a bit towards the end of the afternoon and we were able to do a short hike along Little Salmon River and visit the sand caves in St-Martin.

On our final day with Renée, we did a quick walking tour of the old part of St-John to see some historic buildings. In Fredericton, Renée gave us the grand tour of her favourite hangouts and we took in a round of disc golf.Lue lisää

  • You’re Not Afraid of Spiders Are You?

    23. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We stopped at Fort Beauséjour or Fort Cumberland (depending on who occupied it at the time French or English). One of those historic sites, just as you enter Nova Scotia from New Brunswick.
First thing we saw were the cannons, second thing was the spiders … Thousands and thousands of them. Everything was covered with these tiny little spiders 🕷️. They were everywhere and I mean everywhere. Including on strands of webbing flying in the wind and not one to a strand, but dozens on each thread.
Soon we were covered in them as well.
Of course there was also the fort to see.
On our way out we saw that the grass was completely covered in spider webs.
    Hope you’re not arachnophobic. 🕸️🕷️

Several people recommended that we check out Cape Split. We saw Cape Split from the other side of the Bay of Fundy while we were at Cape d’Or (a lighthouse).
The hike to Cape Split did not disappoint. A long hike 6km along a narrow peninsula, mostly flat leading
to spectacular cliffs teaming with sea birds. It was really cool to watch the birds flying from above.

  • A brief history lesson

    26. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

So lots of history in the Maritimes. The French and the British were fighting for control of the “New” territory. Throw in the Scottish, Acadians, the Mi'kmaq and someone is always fighting someone.
Mostly it was French vs British, the Acadians were neutral and just wanted to farm & be happy. The Mi'kmaq (natives) wanted to preserve their way of life.

Grand Pré was the main Acadian settlement. They took salt water marshes and using a series of dykes blocked the seawater and drained the marshes to create excellent soil for crops. Unfortunately they were deported by the British because they would not swear allegiance to the king.

Fort Anne was a typical fort built originally by the Scottish (Ft Charles). Then it changed hands at least 7 times between the French & English. Each adding or removing bits and pieces.

Port Royal was not a fort but a habitation. Samuel Champlain took it apart and moved it from the island of St. Croix.
Port Royal is a reconstruction, based on Champlain’s diagrams and notes, it was built using hand tools and techniques from the 1600’s. The craftsmanship was amazing.

  • Lunenburg

    28. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Finally some really nice weather a perfect day to explore Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. First stop was the Bluenose II, it must be something to see it sailing on the water.
Then we walked around town looking at shops and all the old buildings. Grabbed some lunch while staring out at the harbour.

We finished the day with an old friend and colleague of Isabelle’s, Jeff. He has a very nice place on a lake way off the beaten path in Labelle, NS.

We were very lucky to visit Peggy’s Cove on a beautiful sunny day! A bit windy, but relatively warm. Peggy’s Cove is very quaint and indeed stunning! The typical picture of what we think the Maritimes look like. A good thing the touristy season is not in full swing yet! It was already quite busy!Lue lisää

  • Halifax

    30. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today was our day to spend time in Halifax. We walked along the harbour front. There was a massive cruise ship docked when we arrived so we ended up looking like just another passenger.
The harbour front is very well done and it was a beautiful day. Most of the shops & restaurants were closed though.
We did get to watch the HMCS Sackville ship dock. It’s a floating museum now and will be docked for the season.
There are these “Hop on, Hop off” vehicles giving tours of Halifax. They are huge and look goofy.
Took an hour or so to tour the Citadel. Tagged along with a tour group to get the inside scoop.

  • Cabot Trail

    31. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Woke up a bit earlier, we were camped in a church parking lot and mass was starting at 9:00. Found a nice spot for breakfast at Baddeck, then onto the Cabot Trail.
When we arrived at Cape Breton Highlands National Park, we were told all the hiking trails were closed because of the fires near Halifax ☹️. Very disappointing since there are several “must do” hikes in the park.
Change of plans … Now we are going to hit all the lookout spots and search for lobster. The info centre said to try a place in Neil Harbour, next to the pharmacy (you can’t miss it). We went to the back to what we thought would be a fish market. We ended up in what looked like an auto parts store for boats. Convinced we had the wrong place we asked the two guys at the door where the lobster was. Turns out you could buy lobster there, but only the meat, frozen in bags. We were looking for something like what we had in Alma with Renée. Lobster right off the boat, cooked, but not shelled. After a very jovial conversation we were given 2 choices; Buy the precooked frozen lobster meat, or go down to the plant, buy live lobsters and cook them ourselves. The thought of cooking a live lobster was not very appealing. After the two guys poked fun at us for not wanting to cook live lobsters, one of the guys, Vincent took pity on us. He said:” I‘lol give you one!”
He took us to the plant and gave us three lobsters to cook. We got a lesson on how they handle and ship the lobsters, how to tell male from female, and of course how to cook them.
So we took our 3 crustaceans to a sunny picnic site and cooked them up.
Thanks Vincent you made our day.

  • The Perfect End

    31. toukokuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We got an actual camping site in the National Park. It was on a cliff with a magnificent view of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Went for a walk on the beach, followed by a little dinner.

We enjoyed the sunset over the water, all the while the cormorants were diving for fish.

The perfect end to our day!

After driving the Cabot Trail, we stopped in Baddeck to visit the Alexander Graham Museum, then to Glace Bay for the Miner’s Museum. Both very well done and informative. Finally, we spend a whole day at Louisbourg. Very fun to be immersed in the life of French colonists at the fortress as it would have been in the year 1744.Lue lisää

  • Goodbye Nova Scotia!

    4. kesäkuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

After Louisbourg, we started heading our way out of Cape Breton towards Pictou to catch the last ferry to PEI. It was a cold and rainy day, so we did not do any visiting, however, we stopped a couple of times where we had good cell coverage to catch a few of Adriel’s games in Orléans, France and Renée’s tournament in Halifax which were all streamed online. 🙂 Unfortunately, with the bad weather, the ferry was cancelled, so we stayed in Pictou for the night to wait for the morning ferry…which was also cancelled, this time due to mechanical issues. 🙄 This gave us the opportunity to visit the local museum which talked about the first Scottish settlers who came on the Ship Hector in 1637. Finally, we drove down the coast to cross the bridge to PEI.Lue lisää

The last few days have been very rainy, so visiting PEI was a bit challenging. Fortunately, we stayed with friends who kept us warm and very well fed! We visited Cavendish, Anne Of Green Gables, a bit of Charlottetown and climb up a very cool lighthouse on Point Prim. In fact it was built in 1844 and is the very first lighthouse on PEI.Lue lisää

  • East Coast of New Brunswick

    8. kesäkuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We are slowly making our way up the East coast of NB. We encountered the largest lobster in the world, learned about the delicate world of oyster farming (check out maritimeoysters.com) and visited a few natural reserves. The rain has let off a bit so we can spend more time outside. And of course, we keep up with beach volleyball and women basketball! Adriel and Devin qualified for the main draw at their tournament in Lecce, Italy and the Fredericton Freeze secured the first place in their province going into the playoffs next weekend.Lue lisää

  • Fredericton - Shippagan

    12. kesäkuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Spent the weekend with Renée in Fredericton. We went to the market, watched her basketball game, played some disc golf, visited the art gallery, fine food and great conversations.

Monday we were off again back on the Acadian Peninsula. There are many smaller towns, all very nice and friendly. Isabelle had fun chatting with everyone and enjoying their Acadian accents.

We stopped at Shippagan, known as the fishing capital of New Brunswick, to cook some dinner. Then found what we thought was a great place to camp for the night.

A walk down to the lighthouse had a few surprises; a beautiful sunset, a couple of Herrons in the water, a momma fox and her 5 pups, and a working lighthouse with the lock ajar (so we snuck up and had a look around).

The next morning we were awoken very early by all the fishing boats. Now we know why it’s the fishing capital of NB.

  • Acadian Historical Village

    13. kesäkuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Walking through the village you visit various Acadian buildings each representing a different period in time starting in 1773. Each building had someone re-enacting life during that building’s time period. They were very much in character. Their clothes were made on site with material manufactured using period techniques, they cooked their lunch on a open fire using food grown in the village, etc. They were also extremely knowledgeable with regard to history and life at that time.

The various buildings also represented different occupations or trades including farmers, trappers, merchants, millers, politicians, coopers, bakers, tin smiths, and more.

    It was very well done.

We continued along the coast of New Brunswick into Québec, catching a few interesting spots along the way. It started raining later on the second day and the faagh rolled in. By the time we got to Percé, the long-anticipated destination, the fog was so thick, that we could see absolutely nothing! So disappointing!
Later that day, we arrived at Forillon National Park. By then, the rain had let up a bit so we went for a short hike to Cape Gaspé, the most eastern tip of The Gaspésie Peninsula. A beautiful hike where we saw a moose, a whale, some seals and a mama bear with her two cubs. That made our day!

  • Back Home

    26. kesäkuuta 2023, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

So we spent the last week hanging out in Quebec visiting Isabelle’s family. Lots of siblings, nephews/nieces and their kids, and of course Isabelle’s mother.

Lots of eating, practicing my French, teaching English. We built a platform for a shed, did a little fishing, sampled the local cheese & ice cream 🍦. Battled a les mouches 🦟 🪰 … and lost.

Washed ourselves and the car (desperately needed it), repacked everything and now we are ready for the long journey home. Likely going to make a run for it to get home quickly. Of course if we see something of interest we will stop along the way.
