    Cape Blanco, OR

    I rode to Cape Blanco and stayed at the Cape Blanco State Park, which was recommended to me by my cousin Elizabeth Johns. It was so beautiful! The campground was great with nice private sites. The first night there I stayed in a lovely rustic cabin on the ocean side which was GREAT since it was raining. ☔️. The second night I tent camped and the weather was beautiful. Completed a 6 mile coastal hike which included a trip to the Cape Blanco lighthouse and sections along the coast and through lovely forest. I could hear the sea lions barking on the rocks! Cape Blanco is the westernmost point in the contiguous US.Weiterlesen

    21.–24. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    Wow! After Cape Blanco I traveled south to Crescent City, CA and stopped on the docks for a fresh seafood lunch at Crescent Seafood. A hole in the wall, but amazingly prepared fresh seafood. Had seared yellowfin tuna. YUMMO! Recommended to me by my friend Julia Cohen! I traveled on to the Mill Creek Campground in the State section of Redwood Park. These trees are so amazing. The campground was in a “new growth” section and the trees were still huge! It was heartening to see some serious conservation efforts in effect. The next day I did a mile long stroll through the Simpson Reed Grove and then a 4 miler called the Damnation Creek Trail. It was strenuous but so worth it. There are places in this world and this life that are impossibly beautiful; where you feel the power of Creation and the sacred. This was one of those times and places. Not sure where the folly of humanity fits into this, but I do pray every day that we see the sacred in each other. As my sister, Maggie would say “Peace Out”.

    The rains came on my third day, so I pulled up stakes and rode to Arcata, CA for the night. Cute college town with 3 (count them) BOOK STORES! Stayed at the historic Hotel Arcata. Next stop is Shasta-Trinity Wilderness.    Weiterlesen

    Shasta-Trinity Wilderness

    After visiting the Redwoods, the rains came in so I pulled stakes a day early and rode down to Arcata, CA on the scenic coast route 101. Sometimes the unplanned is just as fun! The town is a cute college town with a town square, bookstores ❤️ and great places to eat! I stayed at the historic Hotel Arcata which was elegant in a downplayed way and had delicious Sushi in their restaurant, Tomo. I departed the next morning for the Trinity Alps, heading west. I stopped at Weaverville, CA ranger station after a very twisty ride through mountains to get info on hiking in the area. Most of the alpine trailheads are accessible by rutted dirt roads which is not an option for the trike. But found a few that I could access. I stayed at a very rustic uncrowded campground on Trinity Lake. The first night it rained! It’s loud in a tent but I stayed dry. The next two days were gorgeous. After Trinity Alps I rode south through Redding and Oroville in the valley where it got very warm and had to make a few hydration stops. It was a long day of riding and I then pulled into the town of Grass Valley. Adorable town in the foothills of Sierra Nevada. Had a great middle easter meal at MeZe and taro ice cream! OmG so good! I stayed at a really lovely Inn in Grass Valley. I’m onto Lake Tahoe now when I’ll see my Cousin (once removed) Luke Eberle and his partner Sarai!Weiterlesen

    Sierra Nevadas - Family and friends!!

    From Grass Valley which is in the foothills, I rode up and up into the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountains. The first night I stayed with my cousin Luke Eberle and his partner Sarai Stroup at their lovely home in Truckee CA. It was so great to see them and they were very gracious hosts! Got my laundry done 😳. We did a nice hike up to Donner Summit and then celebrated with delicious ice cream!! We had a nice dinner in town together. The Sierra Nevada is a really special and lovely place. I had only been there in the winter to ski but this was a totally different experience. The next morning I rode down through the Kit Carson Pass, which was an amazingly beautiful and remote ride. I ended up at the summer cabin of one of my high school friends, Beth Danielson. The cabin is on US Forest land and it off grid. It sits on beautiful Silver Lake. Beth got me on a paddle board which was very fun! It was great to reconnect and to get ready for our 50th High school reunion in 2025!Weiterlesen

    Yosemite

    31. Aug.–3. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

    I continue south but still in the Sierra Nevada range which is 400 miles long. My destination was a campground south of Yosemite and the ride was totally crazy. I was on route 49 to Oakhurst and there is this section that winds like a corkscrew through a mountainous uninhabited desert region. It was fun for awhile and then it got really hot as I dropped into the valley. Anyway, I made it. Since it was a holiday weekend there were parts of Yosemite which were so crowded, I had to change up plans a bit. I did a guided hike with Isaac in the Tuolumne Meadows area which is remote and there were not a lot of people there. It also gave me an opportunity to ride the whole park getting there. It was a great early morning ride with not a lot of other cars. We hiked to Lower Cathedral Lakes and saw Cathedral Rock summit. It was amazing. We hiked 8.5 miles (out and back) and 1400 feet elevation gain to about 9800’ Isaac was great. He graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies so we had a lot to talk about as he plans his future! Yosemite is amazing and I would love to come back when it’s less crowded to explore!Weiterlesen

    Sequoia and Kings Canyon

    2.–5. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    After Yosemite, I traveled to Seqouia and Kings Canyon National Parks. My time there was tempered by the loss of our cockatiel, Petuki, in NYC. He was 25 years old and we had him since he was a baby 😢 it was his time, but I was heartbroken that I couldn’t be there. Nancy did the heavy lifting and I said good bye on FaceTime. Ugh. I imagine that he is reunited with his ancestral flock in Australia and is doing happy cockatiel things!

    I did some great, albeit distracted, hiking in both Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Both beautiful in different ways. After that I headed into the desert (Mojave) and will catch up with Nancy in Las Vegas. The Mojave is currently going up to 107 degrees so I do all my riding before 10am! Las Vegas is not my cup of tea but all roads literally lead there on my way to Utah! We will have fun I’m sure. I’m just so happy to be able to spend time with Nancy. Her good friend Kathleen will meet us there as well.    Weiterlesen

    Into the Desert and Las Vegas

    6.–11. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 42 °C

    After Sequoia I headed into the lower Central Valley (Bakersfield area) and then into the Mojave. This area is hot generally, but they were going through an excessive heat wave and the temps were hitting 108. I kept my riding hours short and left at 6am arriving at my destinations by 10:30when it was already 90-95. I spent motel nights in Tehachapi (nice little town) and Barstow (not such a nice town!) but I had a bed and the ac worked! I ordered Door Dash! I went from Barstow to Las Vegas and checked into the Park MGM POOL and it was great. Nancy came about an hour later. We had a great time! Las Vegas is not our cup of tea but we had a great time anyway. Nancy won a whopping $21.50 on the slots! Nan’s good friend from LA, Kathleen Marshall, joined us on Day 2. We took in shows - Cirque du Soleil and Postcard from Earth at the Sphere, which is a very cool futuristic venue. There was a robot that was answering questions from the crowd!     Zion

    10.–13. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    So after our wild and crazy weekend in Vegas, I traveled to Zion National Park. I left at 6:30 am as it was another hot one. I stayed at a campground inside the park. NPS runs shuttle buses every 15 minutes. They are electric and make no noise. It was really nice to move through the park without all that extra fossil fuel wafting around. You can get off the shuttle at various trailheads. On day two, I rented an e-bike which they do allow inside the park. That was really fun! And they provide locks and helmets so you can lock up the bike and do a hike. I hiked three different trails. One involved wading through the Virgin River (The Narrows). There were a lot of people in the park so you never got any solitude really, but it was still great to see the beauty of the canyons and the river. Met a nice guy from Vermont, Marcus. Next up is Moab and Canyonlands NP.Weiterlesen

    In Memorium - Connie Goldman

    12.–13. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

    On September 25th, Nancy’s Mom and my dear Mother in Law, Connie Goldman passed away unexpectedly as a result of complications during a medical procedure. We are all so shocked and horribly sad. She led an exemplary life and brought joy to anyone she came in contact with. It was just who she was. Connie was a second mother to me, having lost mine at the age of 33. I am so blessed to have all of the Goldmans and their loved ones in my life. So grateful to have had some time with Connie in Vermont in August and at Rebecca Koenig Fontano’s wedding on the 21st of September. Connie had a great time there and was ripping up the dance floor! What a great memory. We will miss her dearly. After services and Shiva, I decided to go back to Santa Fe, where I left my bike and bring her back east. The long quiet roads of Kansas have been healing in a different way which I have appreciated. I really want to be home with Nancy but need to get back before it gets too cold. I will be posting adventures that I had not posted yet and some going forward. Connie’s last words to me were “Be careful out there. I love you darling”. My parting words were, as always, “I love you Mom” ❤️❤️❤️ and I will be careful.Weiterlesen

    13.–16. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    In mid September- After Zion I headed up Route 15 towards Route 70 East. Had to stop at the Harley Davidson shop in Zion to get a new lightbulb for the Moto. I stayed overnight in Salina, UT where I tended to Moto. Full wash and replaced the headlamp bulb. The latter was actually quite the project and required a YouTube cheat! I then rode into the Moab/Monticello area and stayed 2 nights camping in the Manti La Sal National Forest. This one of my favorite camping sites. Nobody there and a beautiful spot in an aspen forest! I hiked at Canyonlands on the 15th. It was HOT but really beautiful and not crowded like Zion. Very peaceful.Weiterlesen

    Pagosa Springs

    I am still catching up with my posts! After visiting Canyonlands in Utah, I traveled east into Colorado. It was a little chilly but sunny. I stopped in Pagosa Springs for a day and a half to soak in 25 different mineral spring hot tubs at the Springs Resort. It rained most of the time, but who cares - you are sitting in a hot tub! Felt heavenly after many days of riding and hiking! They had one pool named the lobster pot which was 112 Degrees! OMG. The others ran anywhere from 98 to 108. They had live bluegrass band in the lobby at night. Overall a great respite. Next stop Santa Fe.Weiterlesen

    Santa Fe

    September 18-20. After soaking in the mineral pools in Pagosa Springs I traveled southeast to Santa Fe where I stayed with my friend Laura Cushman Goty and her husband Manuel at their gorgeous new home in Santa Fe. Laura and I went to William Smith College and were roommates in Brooklyn for a few years after graduation 🧑‍🎓 which were fun and crazy years but we both survived! I had not seen Laura and Manuel for 20 plus years! It was so great to catch up, share memories, have an amazing tour of Santa Fe, a trip through Los Alamos and a few great hikes in at Bandalier National Monument and the Valle Caldera. We also witnessed the migration of male tarantulas. It’s the time of year when they are out looking for dates! Laura and Manuel have a beautiful and very personable dog, Ceci (chechi) who apparently likes motorcycles! Thanks Laura and Manuel for a great time in Santa Fe!Weiterlesen

    New York and Vermont

    I came back to New York to attend the wedding of Rebecca Koenig to Frank Fontana on Long Island and to see my brother, Mike and SIL Barbara who were visiting from Denver for a different wedding in CT. We met up in Vermont and Nancy joined us. It was a very joyful wedding and it was great to be back in VT for a few days and visit with my brother.Weiterlesen

    The Plains

    1.–5. Okt. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    After Santa Fe I did some very long riding days across the OK Panhandle, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri. This was after being home for service and burial for my beloved mother in law, Connie. Although the days were long I found the riding to be peaceful and healing and gave me a chance to process how so grateful I am to have her in my life. I took a southern route through Kansas (Route 160 mostly). All agriculture and I saw lots of winter wheat. Arkansas was very beautiful and I skirted the Ozarks. Arkansas ties with West Virginia for colorful names of towns - Zinc, Pyatt, Yellville, Bruno, Flippin, Gassville, Mountain Home, Gepp and Viola. That was just on Route 412. I ended my Plains sojourn in Jackson Tennessee. The humidity hit me like a brick wall but I have to admit that I missed it. I love the West, but I am a creature of the East! I don’t have a lot of photos of the plains because I was basically riding, sleeping and eating!Weiterlesen

    Nashville

    5.–6. Okt. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

    I ended up in Nashville, TN after spending the night in Jackson, TN which is a nice small city with some decent restaurants. It was nice to have some good food! I travelled onto Nashville where I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott which was a big step up from my usual accommodations! 😳. I had a ticket to a show at the Ryman Auditorium, which is such an iconic venue and really fun. The show was the Warren Haynes Band. He was a guitarist for the Allman Bros and formed other bands (Genre is blues rock, hard rock and jam rock). It has been a long time since I’ve been to a rock concert and I forgot how fun it is to listen to loud live music! Walked through Music Row but it was pretty nuts with younguns partying and Vanderbilt had just beat Alabama so the place was rocking! Onto Kentucky!Weiterlesen

    Kentucky and West Virginia

    6.–12. Okt. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    After my whirlwind night in Nashville I head to Kentucky and spent 3 nights at the Cumberland River State Park which was so lovely. I stayed at the Lodge which rooms had most amenities and cable TV so I could watch Mets games and WNBA Liberty 👍. The park was really beautiful and I did some really nice hikes in the State Park and Daniel Boone National Forest. I then continued my journey northwest and stayed one night in Whitesburg, KY with a stop in Hazard, KY for lunch. The accents here are distinctly different from the south. More twangy and sometimes hard to understand! Kentucky gets A pluses for the condition of their roads, the friendliest people and their state parks. Really an unexpected surprise. In West Virginia I stayed at this interesting campground called the Outpost. It had access to the New River Gorge National Park trails. I did not camp but stayed in this adorable retro camper called “Mellow Yellow”. Needless to say I was humming the Donovan song all the next day while hiking! Just starting to see fall colors in northern WV. Onto Pennsylvania.Weiterlesen

    Pennsylvania

    So Harrisburg is not really a destination kind of place, but I had a good time there! There was a nice exhibit at the State Museum of Pennsylvania which featured a juried exhibit of Artworks from all over the state. It was interesting how regional art is a product of the geography and history of a place. There were also so e great exhibits of the industrial history of the state. Had a lovely dinner at a farm to table restaurant called Home 231 and a delicious Strawberry cone from Urban Churn!Weiterlesen

    New England

    I finished up my trip with a beautiful and leisurely trip through NYS and the Berkshire mountains. I took a few days at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Had some great healthy food, Yoga and walks in the woods. Over the weekend I met 5 of my besties from HIGH SCHOOL! We rented a lovely place in the Berkshires and just loved on each other! It was a really sweet way to end my trip. I returned to VT on the 20th of October on schedule. Buttoned up the garden and the house. I had a great time traveling this beautiful country.
