  • For the birds

    March 2, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Chilling out with our coffee, watching the birds and the new arrivals. We just tuned in to see the results of Super Tuesday. (Today is what Jimmy Fallon called "Oh shit Wednesday"...)

  • More from St Pete

    March 3, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Day two at Fort DeSoto. We thought we could relocate to a waterfront site but learned that we're in the dog zone. No problem, the water isn't very far from any site here. Rode bikes around the park, with Moxie in the backpack. Lunch on the beach with cold shrimp and cocktail sauce. Yum! As the photo shows, not much on TV!Read more

  • North Captiva

    March 6, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Staying with friends Bob and Sue Hipkins for a couple of days in paradise. Quiet and lovely. Gopher tortoises and manatees. Shshshhh!

  • Galax, VA

    March 10, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Galax is the home of traditional folk music, mostly driven by the fiddle and banjo. It's an important stop along the Crooked Road Trail, a network of concerts, jam sessions, and sites dedicated to American southern roots music. Galax is the home of the oldest fiddle contest in the country. Memories of the late great Andy Woolf cone alive here. We're staying in an RV "park" (field behind a warehouse), called Old Crank's that features an old car museum. Guess who chose this romantic hideaway?Read more

  • Fries, VA

    March 10, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Fries is pronounced "freeze", as odd as that may seem. Driving up and down the mountains, stoppng at bakeries and music stores. They're about two months ahead of our spring here. The terrain reminds me of Vermont.
My parents gave me the name "Daisy Nell" that sounds like I came from these mountains, even though we were New England "wasps" with some celtic roots. That must be why these old banjo tunes sing their way right into my heart. I introduced myself at the jam last night, and one gal said, "Oh, howdy, Daisy Nell, I'm Ginny Mae and this is Rhonda Jean, and that's my husband Junior".
Tomorrow we head home after this southern journey. Our plan is to stop in Amish country for one more night on the road. As the old saying goes, when you go somewhere to get away from it all you usually find that you brought it all with you.
Goodnight Mary Ellen, Goodnight John Boy....

  • Abingdon, VA

    March 11, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This is the site of Heartwood, a center for Virginia's Crooked Road Trail. In addition to the collctions and presentations by regional artisans they feature music every Thursday night. Last night the young folks had their spotlight. The 11 to 15-year olds in the group Shadow Grass blew everyone away with their talent and stage presence. Sensational!
Beautiful countryside sites on a warm spring day and a stop for an iced coffee at Zazzyz made this last day in Virginia a perfect 10.
