    Abu Simbel, Ramses' big conquer

    First stop in the magestic Abu Simbel, visited the two temples made by Ramses II, provably the greater (and more narcissistic) faraon in Egypt. It was nice to see how he destined another temple to his wife (obviously not as big or impacting as his, we want to keep our ego where it is) but seing the appresiation to this big and powerful woman gave me a good start of the trip. What's next?

    Aswan, cruise begins

    Started a cruise along the Nile, visited a very disorganised city in all ways, the traffic, the people, the streets... Feeling the intensity every second of it.

    Luxor, end of the Nile Cruise

    Following the crowds for some days, and getting the full Tourist mode. Absolutely not for me. But the temples are truely impacting and sooooo full of history. Visited some very nice monuments such as Philae Temple, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, King's Valley and Hatsetsup Temple. We're staying in Luxor for a bit longer in a "used to be fancy hotel". Already feeling aaaaaaabsolutely exhausted with the intensity and perseverance of the egyptians, and probably they are already sensing it as well... (ups)

    🔍 Some facts: Tutankhamon was actually not an important king. He ruled very young and for just a few years, because he died from malaria as a young adult. The reason he's so famous is because his tomb was the only one not looted, so it helped a lot to understand how they organised them.
    📍 Essentials: King's Valley
    💡Travelling tips: don't try to full yourself with all the temples, mostly on a short period, orelse you'll start seeing just rocks on top of rocks instead of all the historical beauty behind it.    もっと詳しく

    Cairo, crossing-streets adventure

    Visited the big and busy Cairo. Admired mommies and statues from the big, old and forgotten egyptian era in the Egyptian Museum, visited the big pyramids and the (surprisingly) not so big Sfinx. Probably the best experience in Cairo was fearing for your life everytime you had to cross the street hiding behind locals or just hoping that cars will dodge you at some point.

    🔍 Some facts: did you know that, even though its quite hard to find beer nowadays, its origin comes from Egypt?
    📍Essentials: Egyptian Museum (enjoy the athmosfere and the mess were all this relixs reside)
    📍Essentials: Guiza Pyramids (entering pyramid of Khafre)
    🍴Best food: Koshari Abou Tarek
    🍴Best food: Zöoba
    💡 Travelling tips: whenever you want to cross the street don't hesitate on it, walk determined towards your destiny (you can also hide behind locals for some nice human barrier)
    💡 Travelling tips: always ask locals for the approximate price of a taxi/tuk-tuk to avoid being overcharged
    💡Travelling tips: across all Egypt, everyone wants to take you everywhere. Make sure to be clear with a NO, orelse you'll find yourself with a vulgar guide that you can't get rid of. This also happens with any other service, they'll always try to get as much from you as they can, its important to be aware of it in advance.    もっと詳しく

    Siwa Oasis

    Escaped from the stress and disorder and reached the calm and peace in Siwa Oasis. After a longlong night bus we got to this "secret" spot almost in Libia and enjoyed going back 500 years ago. Slowing our pace and rythm and immersing ourselves in this smiley and beautiful place.

    🔍 Some facts: you might realise when you get here that there are no local woman around. This is because woman in this town can't leave their home unless accompanied by a man (even if the man is a 6 year old kid, who will always have more vote and power than the wife). And even if you do see a woman, you won't even be able to see their eyes. Nevertheless you can see tourists and people who moved from big cities dressed up westernly, and locals are okay with that. For this reason you see very young kids in charge of everything in the town, shopping, driving... We even got a 10 year old taxi driver once 🥲
    📍Essentials: Salt Lakes, Hot Spring at night, biking around the town and getting lost on the oasis
    🏠 Accomodation: Siwa Inn (a bit far from the center and breakfast is a but disappointing, besides this the place is great for relaxing and enjoying)
    💡Travelling tips: bring a nice warm sweater-blanket and earplugs for surviving the night bus trip, assuming that your chances of sleeping through it are quite low. Also be prepared for all the stops among security controls. You might even have to go down and open your bag. As a young woman I was considered harmless and skipped most of them (even saved my luggage in a different place than everyone else). Sexism has its pros sometimes I guess 🤷    もっと詳しく

    Alexandria, the old glories

    Last stop in Egypt. Big contrast after the rustic Siwa, the city felt way more advanced and open, while the level of life seemed a bit higher as well. Visited the amazing library of Alexandria that replaced the big knowledge store from the Alexandrinian Era. Provably not our favorite stop in Egypt, but interesting to imagine how big and succesful the city must have been in the past.もっと詳しく

    Colombo, Sri Lanka

    Longlong trip, but finally reached Sri Lanka. Colombo gives a fist impression of a country more developed than expected, everyone is smiling at you and the feeling of guard starts fading away. Still some days are needed to change the mindset that maybe not everyone is expecting something from you. Went to the economical museum (probably the only one there) and understood why exchanging a cow for a fish is not the best idea😅. And just walked around big and modern buildings for the day until I met Souhaine (my new boss) and started a very long journey (took us two days) to Banyan Camp, starting to understand the SriLankan style and getting ready for the next adventure.

    🏠 Accomodation: Colombo Fort Hostel
    📍Travelling tips: you'll get stopped by a (at least) very nice local, who provably works in a very fancy hotel in the area (or has a very rewarding job) who'll tell you that there's a ceremony that only happens once a year and offer you to take you there. Not true. You'll get scammed and have to let go 50 euros minimum for a very stupid round trip. So careful with this 👁️ (met more than one person who fell on this one)
    📍Travelling tips: Another typical scam might be a kid asking you for some milk powder for a baby he's carrying, that might end up being overly expensive. The supermarket and the boy share the money of this magical powder milk.
    📍Travelling tips: tuktuks might be expensier for tourists in this city than they should, make sure you know how much you should be paying or use uber if you feel unsure about it.
    📍Travelling tips: try to always walk on your left, not only because you won't be scared by drivers comming from behind you, but because its harder for tuktuks to stop so you'll be left alone a little bit more.    もっと詳しく

    Banyan Camp

    Volunteered in one of the most beautiful and unique hotels I've been in my life, surrounded by nature and peace. Also got the chance to work teaching yoga and get some savings (small ones though). Worked a lotlot but got the chance to make some new beautiful relationships, practice yoga in a shalla that can't be better and learned lots about hospitality. Enjoyed the smiley and laughing staff (somehow they were always layghing at me) and learned some sinhalese (which still needs a looooot of improvement), paddleboard in a lake with cocodriles and through huge storms, learned how to eat with my hands (never going back to cutlery!!!!), had to handle really spicy food, had my first motorbike fall, felt like an alien when going through the town, tryed to find elephants unsuccessfully, met some really cool people, had a beautiful and full in nature room and felt as a great asset to the team.

    📍Essentials: just BE in Banyan Camp and let yourself be surprised by it, visit Big Banyan Tree by paddle board

    Tangalle, Llavaneres SriLankan style?

    After tons of work, decided to take some days off and headed to the beach. First experience with Sri Lankan buses, got there sharing sweat from more people than I know, but it was fun. The hostel was right in front of the beach (even though it looked a great deal like the one in front of my home🙃) but it was just perfect for doing nothing. Somehow ended up teaching a yoga class and made some very nice contacts, and mostly enjoyed being on the other side of hospitality for some days. Met a cute french guy, bled across all tangalle with my bigtoe, haunted AC stores and visited a temple on a rock. Not bad for an improductive productive weekend.もっと詳しく

    Abandoned Banyan Camp for a new adventure. First feeling was weird, but feels like there's so much to see and Ella could be a good start. Very touristy city, and slightly disappointing. But it was a good place to eat some non SriLankan food and feel sorrounded by travellers.

    🔍 Some facts: you can go visit Rawana Cave, where an Indian king kidnapped princess Sita and locked her in (absolutely not a fancy cave for a princess). This cave has a corridor that goes all the way to Nuwara Elya, so its enormous! And also has looooots of bats.
    📍Essentials: sit on the door when taking the train to properly enjoy the trip and the views

    Nuwara Elya, Little England

    Arrived to this sort of cheap copy of England. It was like entering to another country from one moment to the other. Even the dogs looked english! Enjoyed the rainy days and tried to lower down a bit the pace. Met David and Agathe, felt nice to have someone to go back to (even if it was for a day) and to feel a little bit like home (in a way). Did some partying with the crazy owners, probably the best about this place was the cool environment in there!

    🔍 Some facts: most of the population in here are Tamils that emmigrated from India for the tea plantations, so sinhalese is not so spocken in here. You'll also see a huge variety of religions in the area.

    Hortons Plains and the end of the world

    📍Travelling tips: The hike and the views are very nice, and its very likely that you'll see a good amount of deers. But the price with transportation and entrance is around 25€, personally I find it too expensive for a hike.     Sri Pada

    After 5.000 steps at 2.30 in the moorning, finally reached the top of Adam's Peak. An absolutely amazing experience. Probably the best part of the climb is seeing all the piligrims struggle and cheer each other on the way, you see so many ages and shapes that its inspiring. The climb is a lot, is very steep and there's stairs everywhere. But absolutely worth it. Reached the top around 4.30-5.00 and waited on the cold wind until sunrise. Absolutely magnificent sunrise, don't know if it was because of the effort to get there or not, but probably one of the most beautiful ones I've seen in my life. And even more stunning starting to see how the darkness turns into a beautiful landscape.

    After this incredible beginning of the day got on a train towards Kandy. This journey was very likely to be one of the highlights of the trip so far. Met a group of Sinhalese football players who just fed me up with their generosity, so much food, they even shared their tiny sit with me, played and sang for a long time and finally got invited to a local New Year's Party. I swear I didn't want to arrive to my stop so I could keep enjoying their beautiful company.

    📍Essentials: Adam's peak before sunrise
    💡Travelling tips: right after the police office you can find a shortcut. You'll go through a trail, so you need a torch to see, and there'll be no one so might feel a bit scary in the middle of the night. But its nice to rest your legs from so many steps for a bit, and after this you'll find yourself in another way to Adam's Peak way less touristy. This is a great option for escaping the crowds right before the arrival.    もっと詳しく

    New Year in Kandy

    Spent some days in this city established around a lake where all life grows around. Decided to meet here a new friend from Nuwara Elyia (Raef, from London) and spent some days together. Enjoyed a bit of the typical SriLankan New Years with sweets from all shapes, firecrackers and the traditional boiling milk (they boil it until it spills out of the pot to symbolise abundance for the year that's ahead). Did a cooking class, went to a traditional Kandyan dance, visited the big Budha, maybe got a bit annoyed by the tourist prises, went on an expedition for beers around the city and got ready for my next station.

    🔍 Some facts: every restaurant in the country has a sink on the dinning area so you can wash your hands before and after eating, because Sri Lankan food is eated with the hands
    🍴Food: Hideout Longe (a bit expensive but very good food, best coffee I've had in Sri Lanka so far)
    🍴Food: Balaji Dosai (sri lankan fast food chain, cheap and nice food)
    🏠 Accommodation: Kandy's Back Packers (the place is not very nice and doesn't really have a nice common area, but they include breakfast, dinner and cooking class and the family is really lovely and helpful)    もっと詳しく

    Sirigya, Lion's Rock

    Found a cozy relaxing spot and stayed in Sigirya for longer than I expected. Visited a bit this calm place with an Ucranian, Indian and Bielorussian (my country was absolutely the most boring one) and made quite an interesting group. Stayed high probably for my hole stay because of the owners of the place, but had some fun with them and learned a typical game a bit similar to poll (I was incredibly bad at it btw). Sirigya rock reminded me to a Game of Thrones castle and had some stunning views/sunsets/sunrises. Even bumped into a Buddhist parade! Was a nice place to recharge some energy, stop and think (even though travelling is amazing, often it also exhaustes you, frustrates you, annoyes you, makes you run out of energy, makes you feel out of place, and gives you lots to think about and reconsider). Even when going to Triccomale finally saw my first wild Elephant. Overall Sirigya was absolutely a must do for me!

    📍Essentials: Lion Rock for sunset (its quite an expensive attraction (30$) but in my oppinion totally worth it, some people only do Pidurangala Rock, but its completely different concepts and this rock is so full of history and amazing architecture, also you should take some time to see it and enjoy it and not be in a rush, so at least 3h are needed), Pidurangala Rock for sunrise, Secret Rock for sunset, ride along the town and stop in the lake, find the ancient undiscovered ruins next to Pidurangala
    🏠 Accomodation: Anotherworld hostel (oasis of calm and peace, the guys from the place are soo awesome (became really good friends with them hehe), really good location, the food is incredibly good, and the place is sooooo cheap)

    Triccomalee, baby sharks🦈

    Spent the last week surrounded by sand and warm water in this spot. Just got here and there was really cool people in the hostel, and it invited to relax and do nothing, so that is what I did. Went snorkeling and saw fishes from all colours and shapes, and mostly SHARKS!! How exciting and beautiful that was. There was a german girl and a bangladeshi guy that I kept bumping into in so many places for the past weeks. And somehow, they were here as well! So it was nice to have this known athmosphere, and to actually enjoy their company without it being a casualty. Did a lot and nothing for this last days, some yoga on the beach with my new german friend (also a yoga teacher), biked around the bay, went for a run with a very handsome Norwegean, enjoyed the empty and quiet beaches, had some wine enjoying the company of other lost travellers, got more and more sunburned despite the big amounts of sunscream, got attacked by crows while eating icecream, started a train, tried to save some newborn kitties, saw some different cultures with the hindus and made a new friend with whom we decided to travel for a little bit together, a really cool Sweedish guy called Hjalmar. We're heading to Anudarapura from here... If we manage to leave this place!

    Anuradhapura

    Did this part of the trip with Hjalmar, had a lot of fun and visited many many historical places (probably enough rocks for a while now). We decided that the road looked calm, flat and easy enough to do some adventure and get a motorbike, and we ended up with a very old motorbike (and overpaying for it) that even had gears (so truely a learning experience), but we loved it! So it was a good way to feel safe to get a bike on our own after this. During this days I had to put away my budget a bit so we could adapt and be a good team (which worried me a bit) and drank a bit too much beer and had all non sri lankan food we could find (which leaded to junk food basically). But it was nice to break my "routine" and let go for some days. Also, did a field trip to the ayurvedic hospital (moment I had been waiting for a very long time) because of a rash I got on my back, what a unique experience! Got prescribed to avoid pineapple (what a gift to have an excuse to refuse this fruit) and sea food and to eat lots of cucumber and watermelon and got a weird oil (looked and smelled like tabasco sauce) and some veryvery interesting pills. Could not get the information for what it was for and what it was made of, but seeing the pharmacy and how they made it was more than enough to feel back into one of the pottery classes of Harry Potter.

    💡Travelling tips: there's plenty enough of monuments, ruins and temples for free or a reasonable price. So it's not necessary to spend 30$ on the main entrance, you can enjoy more of the same on the surroundings.

    Finally, Jaffna!

    After saying for over a month that I was heading towards Jaffna... Finally made it! No tourists/travellers could be spotted on the area (only met the two guys who were also staying at my hostel), the city felt something like a mix of Sri Lanka and India, the atmosphere felt different, and so did the people. Everyone was less smiley and the streets felt somehow less clean and poor, but keeping the Sri Lankan essence. The undiscovered beaches and the roads were something to enjoy, full of colonial ruins, and everyone would turn around and looked at me surprised, probably same reaction as I would have towards an elephant. Biked and biked around the area, stopping for every interesting place I found, enjoyed the company of Lars, a dutch guy, and had some real conversations (something I was really needing for a while), enjoyed a coconut that a lovely man got us from the top of a palm tree, haunted some dosas and just got lost on the mistery of Jaffna.

    Arugam Bay

    Surfing village with an interesting mixture of a very conservative muslim community and lots of sunburned tourists and fancy and slightly hippy places. Spent some unproductive days in this place, went on an unsuccesfull expedition and had to cross a river full of crocodriles with a fisherman, tried longboarding on a hangover day after playing piccolo with manymany germans and did some aeroyoga. From here got a job in a super fancy hotel teaching yoga for the last week in Sri Lanka before heading to Vietnam, so I can save some money, chill and enjoy some commodities for a bit. Excited and nervous about it!

    Underneath the Mango tree

    Last stop of the trip, a bit of rest and relax with this new job at a veryvery fancy and luxurious Ayurvedic Retreat (I am starting to get the hang of working in beautiful places and being able to enjoy them while just teaching for a few hours) .
    With its ups and downs, I had some time to relax, think and process. Found out just before leaving that the yoga teacher I was replacing was for instance... Miriam! The same german girl I kept bumping into everywhere. And even heavier, Sifat (the bangladeshi guy) was also in Hiriketya!! How crazy is destiny? I started to feel this crowd as my SriLankan people, and that felt quite good. So, I decided to drop by a day before to the place to settle down and enjoy Miriam's company. We went to a bar for an open mic, and how fun it was! It was literally what I needed and I didn't even know. There were two girls dancing in the front that looked so beautiful and connected, that we couldn't stop staring at them, until... We joined! It was just medicine, we felt so free and good, even one of the girl started crying saying how beautiful and empowered we all felt. I guess I've been having a hard time connecting in this place, and doing it through movement felt so good (even though you meet lots of people all the time, not everything is sunshine and roses, and quite often the conversations are superficial and finding people of your kind is not so easy).
    After that, I stayed in the resort on my own for a week, visiting some places nearby, interacting with older and rich european woman and relaxing. It was nice to have some continuity with the students (because guests usually stayed for up to 3 weeks), and see their progress and motivation. But often there was not much work because the season was ending and people were leaving, and also the classes were while the treatments, so sometimes I felt a bit useless.
    Last days Miriam came back and it was so nice to meet her right before leaving, and decided to give her my knife, which I couldn't take with me, so she would give it back to me next time we met, in exchange she gave me her earrings and it felt like a promise of a soon reunion.
    Last days were pretty weird though, I haven't written very much about the SriLankan political and economical situation, but its been kinda harsh and present on daily life here. There was a shortage of many products, such as gasoil or cooking gas, or very silly things that were exported as sunscrean or Gin, the money currency dropped day by day, so many things were way cheaper, but also other types of things had to increase the prices because of the hard situation (as transport for example), and people felt so thirsty of tourists, power cuts were a part of the day, and there were even times when you would only have power for a few hours as 2-3, where you had to do everything that required modern life (unless you were in a fancy place with a generator), people were talking about it day and night, politicians houses were surrounded by civilians so they could not leave, curfews were imposed after every new event and protests started getting uglier and uglier. So for this last days protests got more violent, there was fire and destruction everywhere. People were angry and tired, their liders' abuse had reached their limit. So the prime minister resigned. Now the only person who was left was the president Gota. So, the last days in Sri Lanka a long curfew was imposed, so no buses to leave the place, no open restaurants, and mostly, no way to get to the airport. So I was a bit shut at the place with not much to do and no way to leave (even my lovely tuktuk driver Dishan wouldn't dare to pick me up), feeling weird about this ending point, that was mixed with some disappointments and existential crisis around me.

    Anyways, nothing is fun without a bit of adventure, and even when things get harder they never get impossible. After a rapid test in the nicest and most serious place that I found (it ended up being literally a backyard), headed to my leaving point from the country.

    How weird it is to leave a place were you've felt so comfortable in, understanding the culture, the traditions and the lifestyle. Even integrating it a little bit on myself. To just leave, not knowing whats ahead and if you'll ever return to what you're leaving behind.

    🔖 Before you go:
    Check the political and economical situation. At the moment I was there Sri Lanka was going through a very tough time with lots of shortages, protests and even curfews. Also read carefully about the common scams in Colombo so you don't fall into them just arriving.

    🤤 Best food:
    1. Rice & curry (papadam, tapioca leaves and jackfruit at least;))
    2. Egg hoppers / Roti
    3. Curd with mango, papaya, banana and watermelon with oats, chocolate and nuts (my to go whenever I was tired of rice & curry)

    2. Laughing Leopards (dinner and breakfast included)
    3. Another world hostel (really good breakfast)

    1. See an elephant on his wild habitat

    Hanoi🎢

    Hanoi was absolutely a rollercoaster of emotions that made it hard to understand and process. My existential crisis was growing bigger and bigger, and I was feeling confused, disappointed, sad and desmotivated in several facets of my life. But at the same time, Hanoi was so exciting, different and intriguing that my mind went from one side the the other. Xavier (the french guy I met in Tangalle)'s birthday was when we met-bumped into each other (kinda way) so I though I would take him to do something different and we went to have alcohol made out of snakes. The place was in the middle of nowhere, and we ended up having shots with a random Vietnamese guy in his garden, all surrounded by alive snakes in cages and pots of snakes alcohol. It was reallyreally shocking and unique for sure. And a real surprise for both of us.
    But Hanoi also ment trying to organize my thoughts and feelings. So I spent more money than usual changing plans last minute and just trying to listen to my gut, which made me lose a nice bus (and abandone an american guy, I am sorry for that) to join two french guys on a long motorbike trip that I had met 10 minutes ago. For some reason it just felt right. So next day, woke up, went to rent my beautiful semiauthomatic bike "Saperlipopette" and created the new gang I will be travelling with for the next 10 days around the north of the country. We decided to name ourselves the "Brokepackers". We did some organizing stuff we had to do, and headed towards our new adventure, leaving the stressfull and busy roads of Hanoi and its pollution and thousands of motorbikes behind. This just gave me the joy and excitement I was lacking, and suddenly everything felt alright again. My heart came back to place, and so did the peace in my mind. We look like and interesting group, Gabriel is absolutely my type of traveller and feel like we'll get along very well, he feels calm and adaptable; and Sebastian is a vibrant teenager full of energy. It also feels weird to tag along with people for such a long time, I am wondering if I'll be possible to work it out.

    💡Travelling tips: avoid stopping a taxi on the street if you don't want to be riped off. Grab is an easy alternative to a taxi.
    🔍Some facts: to enter the temples in Vietnam, you'll see that there is a very large step on the way. That is because Vietnamese believe that ghosts can not jump, so that way they can't protect the temple from them entering
    📍Essentials: snake villa if you're up for some tough adventure
    🏠 Accomodation: Central Backpacker's Hostel (really cheap, free breakfast and walking tour. But most important, one hour of FREE BEER!!!!)

    Ninh Bình (bike trip🏍️)

    Leaving Hanoi was stressful and long, had never seen so many motorbikes together and the traffic and the disorder were eternal. It was Sebs first contact with a scooter and it became dark pretty fast so it was a bit stressful to get out of there. But then, the first stop on our motorbike trip was absolutely over our expectations. The places we visited, even though not a bargain, were so worth it. We enjoyed so much the place and each others company. Ninh Binh is absolutely a most do in Vietnam

    💡Travelling tips: probably vegetarianism and budget travel are quite incompatible in this country. You can find several options with no meat on restaurants and nice cafes, but the cheap street food around 1-2€ will 99% of the time involve meat. Fried rice and vegetable noodles are probably the easiest options outside the variety of big cities. Learn how to say vegetarian in vietnamese to survive the trip.
    🔍Some facts: don't get alarmed if you can't find your motorbike after leaving it somewhere, very unlikely that someonen stole it. It's common in Vietnam that people move other people's bikes to their convinience (even one or two streets away)!
    🔍 Some facts: there are dragons everywhere in Vietnam because there is a legend that says that Vietnamese people are the descendants of a Dragon and a fairy.
