    Caye Caulker - First Impressions

    1 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our first impressions of Caye Caulker would quite simply be paradise!

With the bluest of waters, sandy shores and 2x rum punch for £4 you cannot go wrong!

We spent the afternoon and evening drinking at the various bars, particularly the Lazy Lizard at the tip of the island which had a great atmosphere, even if the DJ did repeatedly play Fireball by Pitbull.

We also made time for a little swim and wandering through the locals part of the island.

Here's to more of the same tomorrow!

    Snorkelling Day

    2 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

At least we have some pictures to share from our snorkelling trip!

Today we spent 6 hours at sea, jetting around to 5 different snorkelling spots. We were lucky to be able to see everything we set out to including sharks, turtles, manta rays, sting rays and thousands of fish!

This was a definite trip highlight so far as there was so much wildlife at every turn, especially at 'shark alley'.

    Sunset in Caye Caulker

    2 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

This evening we headed down to Pelican sunset bar (does what it says on the tin). We intended only cooking our own dinner tonight but the hostel cooker had ran out of gas so we opted for a fish burger and chips each which was absolutely lovely!

We were totally exhausted after a day of sun and sea so were in bed not long after 8.

    3 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

This morning I spent some time in the hammock before we set off to find somewhere to watch the Manchester derby. After a bit of faffing we ended up in the recently reopened sports bar (which burnt down a few months ago) with a lovely view out to sea.Читать далее

    Tarpon Feeding

    3 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

Around 20m from our hostel is the tarpon feeding dock. For $5BZD (£2) you get a tub of sardines to feed to the tarpons. They have quite a leap out of the water and one of the big boys even grazed my wrist. The accuracy of the tarpons was poor as only one out of the five sardines ended up directly in their mouth and some missed the sardines altogether.Читать далее

    The Split

    3 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

We then headed down to the split for a few hours to soak up the atmosphere and some sun. Chef Tarpey then whipped up our first self-cooked meal of the trip, tuna pasta which was delicious!

After this we headed out for a wander and settled at the sports bar once again, not even because there was any good sport on but since it was a nice and calm seaside atmosphere.Читать далее

    Belize City to San Ignacio

    4 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We arrived in the lacklustre city of Belize City! It was easy to see why we weren't making an overnight stop here as it seemed to be full of cramped streets with not much going on.

We took a 15 minute through the city to the bus terminal where we purchased our tickets towards San Ignacio on the jam packed local bus. There was one other tourist so we didn't feel alone!Читать далее

    Afternoon/Evening in San Ignacio

    4 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

After around 2.5 hours on the bus we arrived in San Ignacio! A small town and not over touristy either. After checking into our hostel we took walk to the nearby supermarket to buy the ingredients for a gourmet egg and beans on toast dinner!

We decided we needed to sit down and plan our route into, out of and around Honduras and after a few hours we were no closer to working out a route, but we have sent a few dozen email and WhatsApp enquiries to help us out.

After dinner it was free rum punch at the hostel from 6pm to 9pm so we will and truly made the most of this!

    Green Iguana Conservation Project

    5 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

This morning we took a short walk to a nearby hotel home to the Green Iguana Conservation Project! The project takes in injured iguanas that would be unable to survive in the wild, breeds them and releases the healthy offspring back into the wild when the time is right.

There were two enclosures, one for the adults and one for the bright green kids! Our guide was full of information and it made for an interesting start to the day. The hotel also had howler monkeys living it its trees!

    Election Day in San Ignacio

    6 марта 2024 г., Белиз ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today it was local election day in San Ignacio where the people were turning out to election a new mayor! The streets were covered in flags, banners and slogans as people drove around in pick up trucks flying flags to support their candidate.

Many shops and local amenities were therefore closed and no alcohol could be sold until 6pm.

We went for a walk around the market, down the river and through the town, with a stop for French pastries on the way, before heading back to the hostel for some further trip planning whilst we waited for our shuttle.

    Belize to Guatemala

    6 марта 2024 г., Гватемала ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

After 5 nights in Belize it was time to wave goodbye as we headed into the highly commended nation of Guatemala!

The line to leave Belize took around 45 minutes to clear and annoyingly not a single person joined the queue behind us, talk about bad timing! Guatemala immigration could easily have been missed as there was no signage and nobody to stop you just walking across the border (which some people on our bus did before realising they needed their passports stamping).

The drive through Guatemala was stunning with the sun setting over the surrounding hills and forest.

    Evening in Flores

    6 марта 2024 г., Гватемала ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

At around 6:30pm we arrived into the colourful island of Flores! The sun was setting and it was soon dark, but this didn't stop the sweat dripping off us in the extreme humidity.

Dan outdid himself once again with a salmon and vegetable dish with homemade sauce.

After enjoying this delicacy we headed with our new Canadian friend to a rooftop bar overlooking the square that would only serve us beer (no other alcoholic drinks and not even water) at £1.50 a pop.

After this we encountered a band rehearsing for all to here so bought some beers and pre mixed drinks from the local shop (60p per can) and sat on the curb enjoying the ambience.

A great start to proceedings in Guatemala and hopefully a sign of things to come!

    Morning in Flores

    7 марта 2024 г., Гватемала ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This morning we were up and out to explore the island of Flores! Sea level rise is definitely a thing here with the north west coast of the island being completely flooded, and the sea wall very close to being breached in all other parts.

Since the island is so small our lap didn't take long so we headed across the bridge to do some shopping. We picked up some fresh pastries for breakfast and enjoyed these overlooking the river. We tried to buy SIM cards but forgot these so our connectivity to the outside world will have to wait another day!

We've noticed that each day here seems to begin with the promise of cloud but by 9am this always clears to reveal the baking sun.

    Tikal - By Day

    7 марта 2024 г., Гватемала ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

This afternoon we headed to Tikal for the sunset tour!

Tikal used to be the capital of the Mayan empire, home to 150,000 people and covering 575 square kilometres. There are approximately 10,000 structures on the site however only 3,500 of these have been excavated whilst the remainder remain covered by jungle. It's a huge task to uncover the entire site and something that the Guatemalan's don't yet have the money for!Читать далее
