Dunedin

Na sklonku léta, těsně před tím, než unaveně vztyčíme vlajku ve Wanace, míří naše čtyři kola sem. Vstříc patě Jižního ostrova, do Dunedinu. Osud ale zavelí jinak, načež tahle varianta končí zmačkaná v kyblíčku paralelních vesmírů. Od té doby nás však čas od času svádí myšlenka: Co kdyby? Možná proto nasloucháme volání, abychom Dunedin očíhli, ještě než nadobro zmizíme. Navíc, Sophiina mamka má přátele. Ti mají přátele, kteří mají přátele, a právě ti v Dunedinu bydlí! Pouto sice tak vzdálené, že musíme kreslit diagram, ale jak se říká. Stačí sedm lidí, a znáš celý svět. Píšeme jim… a… moc rádi nás uvidí! Takže bookujeme víkend u Maxe a Arlene. Staršího páru oblečeného v dobrou náladu, který nás královsky hostí ve svém domě. Z něj pak vyrážíme zkoumat okolí. A Dunedin si zamilujem. Možná z důvodu slunného počasí, kterého Dunedin dostává asi jen na pět dní v roce. Anebo pak oceánu, jenž nám oběma chybí! Wanaka je sice spektakulární, ale znáte to. I to nejlibovější maso se ojí. První den kroužíme za městem a kocháme se. Místní cestičky jako by byly ukradeny ze zeleného Walesu. Na druhý den pak narážíme město. To působí trochu zaprášeně, což mě zaskočí. Vyjma turistických míst, běžný Zéland platí za prostou zemi. Ta vstává s ovcemi a do zářné budoucnosti, zdá se, nijak nespěchá. Motor domů poté nahazujem ztuha. Dunedin je totiž moc fajn. Měly tedy naše kroky přeci jen směřovat sem? Bývalo by nám tu bylo lépe? Já nakonec věřím, že ne. Ta představa, že někde jinde tahaj z vody vetší macky, je iluze. Život totiž hraje vše. Od smutné písničky až po serenádu v pětihvězdičkovém hotelu. Jediný rozdíl mezi Wanakou spatřuji v tom, že Dunedin ovládají fanoušci Manchasteru City. Takže pokud se domníváte, že tím lepším ze dvou týmů jsou United, hrajte radši blbce, který nerozumí anglicky. Spousta věcí se tím (nejen tady) usnadní.

Dunedin

At the tail end of summer, just before we tiredly rise our flag in Wanaka, our four wheels are heading here. Toward the foot of the South Island, to Dunedin. Fate, however, has other plans, and the whole idea ends up crumpled in the wastebasket of parallel universes. Ever since, though, a thought keeps tempting us now and then: What if?
Maybe that’s why we listen to the call to go and check Dunedin out before we disappear for good. Besides—Sophie’s mum has friends. Those friends have friends, who have friends, and those people live in Dunedin! A connection so distant we practically need to draw a diagram, but as they say: give it seven people and you know the whole world. We write to them… and… they’d love to see us!
So we book a weekend with Max and Arlene. An older couple dressed head to toe in good spirits, who host us royally in their home. From there we set off to explore the surroundings. And we fall in love with Dunedin straight away. Maybe because of the sunshine—which Dunedin only gets about five days a year. Or maybe because of the ocean, which we both miss. Wanaka may be spectacular, but you know how it is: even the finest cut of meat can wear thin.
The first day we circle the outskirts and soak it all in. The local paths look as though they were stolen straight from green Wales. On the second day we hit the city. It feels a bit dusty, which catches me off guard. Apart from tourist hotspots, everyday New Zealand comes across as a plain country—one that rises with the sheep and, it seems, isn’t in any hurry toward a dazzling future.
We start the engine home reluctantly. Dunedin is simply very nice. So should our steps have led here after all? Would we have been better off? In the end, I believe not. The idea that somewhere else they’re pulling bigger fish from the water is just an illusion. Life plays everything—from a sad song to a serenade in a five-star hotel.
The only real difference I see between Wanaka and Dunedin is that Dunedin is ruled by Manchester City fans. So if you happen to believe that United are the better of the two teams, it’s wiser to play the fool who doesn’t understand English. It makes a lot of things easier in life.Read more
