    April 13, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

Well this is the first road trip in our new to us and as yet unnamed motorhome. We have fettled away till the long list has been completed, and so off we go up north on a coastal trip around the Lake District, moving on every day. So today we are travelling up to Morecombe on the first leg of our journey. The weather is dry although rain has threatened all day. A good journey with no hold ups
We arrived at Morecombe and after a bite to eat we headed towards the Prom, boy it's blowing a gale, we strolled along for a while but had to turn back as it was cold and starting to rain.
We headed off to our first over night stay at The Lodge Pub, a free nights parking in exchange for buying a meal in the pub, and nice pints of Eagle IP beer.,who could pass up on that.

  • Grange-Over-Sands

    April 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

After a very cold night we wake to lovely sunshine, and hit the road A6 in this case and we travel to Grange-Over-Sands. The wind has dropped right away today so our walk along the prom is a lot more pleasant. The prom runs alongside the railway line but no trains appear to be running. We head into town through the park in search of a cuppa and then find a fabulous butchers, so 2 huge rump steaks and lamb steaks along with Cumberland sausage are purchased, it's a good job we don't live here it would cost me a fortune.Read more

  • Holker House and Gardens

    April 14, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

After leaving Grange-Over-Sands we rock up for a visit to Holker House, family home of the Cavendish family. Large country estate with Hall, gardens, cafe and goumet shop. We walked around the hugely impressive house where all the furnishings and contents were not roped off, so you could roam at random. Onto the well laid out gardens, the Rhododendron bushes were huge and full of colour. Onwards then to our next overnight stay on a small site near Newby Bridge.Read more

  • Ulverston and the Rugby Club

    April 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Today we're going to Ulverston, a lovely town full of independent shops. Birth place of Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame. We visit the indoor market and make a purchase, we also pick up some fresh vegetables for tomorrow's tea, and visit the charity shops in search of a new Whiskey glass as his got broken this morning.
After a cuppa we travel on to tonight's stop over at Millom Rugby Union Football Club, doesn't sound much but we have a lovely view.
The weather has changed today, we have beautiful sunshine and a much better temperature. We sit outside and soak up some rays for a bit before Mart decides to have a bike ride along the Lagoon and Estuary, then it's back to the van for Steak and Chips for dinner.

  • Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway

    April 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Today we're taking a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Narrow Gauge Railway from Ravenglass to Dalegarth. When they say narrow gauge they mean it, the carriages were very compact, we chose an open sided one as when we booked the weather looked okay but it was a bit cool.
Nice journey of about 40 minutes through the countryside, plenty of wildlife (and sheep of every variety) to look at and lots of beautiful bright gorse bushes to brighten up the otherwise dull and misty landscape.
On reaching Dalegarth we disembark and head straight to the pub, well why not there's nothing else to do here. Nice drop of Lakeland IPA was enjoyed during the 40 minute stopover then it's back to the train for our homeward journey. A quick look around the museum before heading off to the overnight stay outside Whitehaven, a lovely site with good views, until the fog descended.

  • Whitehaven and the Jefferson Rum Museum

    April 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Our new wheels are proving to be everything we wanted and our snag list is getting insignificant. But boy is the ride hard and over crap roads ratlles like a bag of spanners! Tyre pressures have been adjusted to no avail and the air suspension is set on 20psi as recommended in the van handbook. After a tour of the Airride web site to get some more information on the system they recommend topping the system up to 100psi and test and reduce by 10 to find a best setting. So topped up to 80psi at a BP garage and what a transformation! Huge improvement in the ride and reduction in oven rattle. We are very happy bunnies.
Today we're visiting the harbour metropolis of Whitehaven, after parking and walking along the harbour to the Beacon Museum, only to find it's closed on Mondays we head into town to find the alternative tourist attractions, the Rum Museum.
Jefferson's started bringing Rum and sugar from the Caribbean in the 1700, and the museum documents the story of how it all began. Very interesting with lots of atmospheric vaults and tableaus to see, with a tot of rum at the end.
The town itself is very run down and tired with lots of empty shops. We return to the Motorhome and head for Maryport just up the coast where we will spend the night.

  • Maryport and the missing wallet

    April 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After leaving Whitehaven we head to Maryport for our free overnight stay. We're parking up on the Promanade. When we arrive the sky is thick with cloud and the tide is out but we can see Scotland from our windows.
We decide to get the bikes out and go for a ride around the harbour. There's a mixture of both working boats and leisure boats.
We parked up at the pub for a drink, while trying to decide whether to eat as well as drink we found out Martin had lost his wallet, thank goodness for card payment by phone!
After finishing our drinks quickly we head back to the Motorhome hoping we've left the wallet there. As we arrive a car pulls up and a man gets out and asks ' Are you Martin' and produces the lost wallet.
We had riden past him while he was out walking his dog, and as he continued he found the wallet, looked inside and recognised Martin from his bus pass, apparently he had been driving around the town trying to find us, luckily he decided to try the prom and recognised us when he drove past us. Just goes to show there are some good people around.
Breath easy now and enjoy the sunset.

  • Cockermouth and a room with a view.

    April 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After looking around Wordsworth's house we stroll down the high street in search of a drink. We've noticed that most of the trees lining the street and the lampposts are decorated with Daffodils which have been knitted and crocheted, it certainly brightens up the town.
After a drink and something to eat we travel on to the campsite at Wallenwaite. We drive alongside Bassenthwaite Reservoir which is a beautiful colour today until we reach the site. We certainly have a room with a view, the best one of the week.

  • Sizergh Castle

    April 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today we are coming almost full circle to where we started. We are visiting Sizergh Castle a medieval manor filled with treasure collected by 26 generations of the Strickland family. At our first attempt at parking we find car park is full with no space for our now larger Motorhome so we leave and visit the near by farm shop. After a spot of lunch we attempt the castle again this time with more luck.
The castle is two storey and we're allowed to walk around freely with guides every now and then to answer any questions you may have.
We walked around the gardens which in a few weeks time will be full of colour before heading to our last stopover at The Tavern at Hale, another freebie in exchange for a meal. Bangers and mash for me Cheese Pie for Martin, too many syns but very nice.
