Carrying on with our theme of heading for home we are now parked up close to the Normandy coast and the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, sitting out the cold and the brief flurry of snow until a break in the weather allows us to go visiting and today (Friday 21st) is the day. We are starting to make our way towards Calais and then home but a stop at Nantes to see the Mechanical Elephant that is part of Les Machines de Lille project was on the way for us and it certainly didn’t disappoint. 🐘 Looks like the city is gearing up for Xmas as well.Les mer

A short weekend stop here on the CCP camper stop close to the centre of Royan. Once again we have been lucky with the weather so we are off for a ride along the coast and lunch by the sea 🍕.

The Fortified city of Carcassonne is as you would expect on a hill ( good defensive strategy) but the small effort involved with getting there on our bikes was worth it. The usual amount of gift shops, cafe’s ☕️ and restaurants are in attendance, in fact the one in the photos supplied our lunch and the chance to get warm from the biting wind. We spent some time wandering between the walls and in the streets taking photos and came away thinking “that was a good day out”.Les mer

Riding out of the Camper Park on our bikes and looking to our right we could see the snow capped mountains in the distance which all seemed a bit bizarre as we were dressed in shorts and t-shirts under a hot sun. Thirty minutes or so later we were wandering around the seaside town of Collioure eating ice cream and admiring the surroundings along with a few hundred other people.Les mer

The weather on the road to France amounted to rain with a bit of thunder and lightning chucked in just to make it interesting, but it didn’t take to long to find our next parking spot close to the beach in Argelés-sur-Mer.
The old town here is a nice place to have a wander around on a nice sunny afternoon and the beach is magnificent but it has a dark side.
As the Spanish civil war ended France found itself flooded with refugees and the beach here became a reception area for anybody fleeing Franco’s troops which according to the memorial became a concentration camp for 160,000 people which of course meant death from hunger, cold and disease followed for the unlucky!Les mer

Another ferry crossing arriving on time. Seas were a bit rough overnight but come the next day all was calm. ⛴️
After disembarkation it was a 40 min drive north of Barcelona to our pre booked campsite ⛺️. Once again in the evening traffic but a much more pleasant experience than Italy, Didn’t beep the horn at all. We will stay here for a while in the Spanish sun, ride the bikes out to the beach, no doubt have lunch somewhere and try the Pizza restaurant at the entrance before heading off to France.Les mer

“Mahoosive” and if you need reminding then that is bigger than big! That describes this place well. No matter how many times you are told, if you have not been before you will still be blissfully unaware of how large it is. We attempted to follow a tour in the book that Trevor lent us but the map was better than my skills at reading it so soon got fed up up with that and just wandered to the bits where the biggest crowds were gathered. I seriously think that you could spend a week here just trying to take it all in.Les mer

If like ourselves you take the train to Ercolano to visit the Archaeological park beware of two things, whoever said that the walk from the station to the site was 300m had a very good imagination and secondly make sure you get on the correct train back again. If it had not been for the assistance of a very nice Italian man who took us back to our campsite in his car I think we would still be wandering the suburbs of Pompeii.🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🫏
Back to business. Herculaneum being much smaller than Pompeii is a great introduction to the area. Only about 10 acres in total it makes for a pleasant wander amongst the ruins of the ancient Roman town which is generally better preserved than its big brother.. it is believed that most of the residents fled the area before it was to late but that is not so down in the boat sheds where grim discoveries were made. Although the skeletons are models they have been replaced in the same positions they were found.Les mer

Destination Reached and it is slinging it down with rain. 🌧️ ☔️ Hope it cheers up in the next few days but the forecast is not good. Hopefully the weather will change while we are parked here complete with our own lime tree. €31.00 a night right outside the Archaeological park of Pompoeii.Les mer

Didn’t know this was here until we arrived at the camper park but has proved to be a great day out. Three large Greek temples with the temple of Athena estimated to have been constructed at around 500Bc. These temples are now in the company of the remains of an old Roman town with many of the features easily recognised. Ampitheatre, Forum etc.Les mer

A very nice little camper park we found here. Only €18.00 a night in October and just a few minutes walk to the beach through the woods 🌳 just for extra interest when you get to the beach there is a old WW2 bunker to explore.Les mer

The free shuttle bus from the campsite dropped us off on the edge of the old town and off we went exploring. The town is well known for the rock houses that were occupied until the fifties, we also visited a rock church but photography was not allowed inside. The old town revealed itself as a labyrinth of steps and alleyways and if you happen to be a 007 fan then you are in luck as some of the scenes from “No time to die” were filmed here.Les mer

We arrived in Italy bang on time (19.00) hrs and made our way through the Italian evening traffic to our chosen park up for the night. Even joined in with a bit of horn beeping and swearing!
Today we find ourselves at Camping Masseria de Pantaleone close to the ancient town of Matera. €26.00 a night with electric and a free shuttle bus into the old town. What a great find this one is.Les mer

Three Islands Boat Trip

Leaving Mlini in our wake we travelled onto Dubrovnik to pick up more holiday makers like ourselves. We got to see some of the outer walls of Dubrovnik from the sea but not much else to say really. It was a day out on a boat stopping at the harbours of three little islands to admire the view which was similar to the view at Mlini harbour. 🤷🏼‍♂️Les mer

We approached Dubrovnik by taxi boat that dropped us off in the old town harbour ready to get into a bit of sightseeing but wow. It was packed with people who had the same idea as ourselves and here we are in the second week of October. It is a UNESCO world heritage site of restaurants, cafes and bars. I am in no hurry to go back, not even to have my picture taken with a model of Tyrion Lannister.Les mer

Down the steep steps from the campsite is the pretty little harbour in Mlini and the perfect place to catch the water taxi to Dubrovnik 🛥️

Split Old Town

After reading a few descriptions of Split the one stand out thing seemed to be that a visit to the Diocletian’s Palace was a must. So with a bit of help from Uber we set off for a visit. Now here’s the thing. The Palace is not some grand building on a hill top but very much a part of the old town itself. Bars, restaurants, shops and even apartments blend together with the old Roman ruins waiting to be investigated.
After allowing ourselves to wander the old streets and alleyways for a while we decided a rest was required so dived into a bar for coffee and a bite to eat before heading off again.Les mer
