    Rain and Fire at Volcano

A steady rainfall at Volcano encouraged us to drive down chain of craters road to the coast.
We were surrounded by lava flows. We found this one grove of coconut trees with the trees growing right out of rock. No other trees for miles in all directions.

Lava trees are made when lava cools and hardens around a tree, the tree burns up, then the hot lava flows away leaving these stone towers.

2018 Lava Flow @ Leilani Estates

This rock is only about 6 years old! In 2018 an underground lava flow that started 26 miles away in Volcano National Park, broke the surface in the residential area known as Leilani Estates. The lava poured across the residential streets and backyards in long red streams and volcanic fountains for 6 months.

Destroying 716 homes turning an entire community into a solid black mass of rock. Take time to look at the map: people are still living in homes that are across the street from where the lava stopped.

Marc, walked about 150 yards across the flow to take the last 4 photos. They show the depression that used to be a lava lake.

    Black Sand Beach

A black sand beach is really pretty, but did you know that black sand is just bits of lava crushed really small by the waves? So a black sand beach isn’t soft and smooth it’s like walking on tiny pieces of rocks. That doesn’t stop people from having a great time at the beach and in the waves. This beach is isolated and far from any tourists and so dramatic.

    Akaka falls

Rainy day at Akaka falls. This is the tallest waterfall on Hawaii island at 400. Steady flow of people along the concrete path, stairs and bridges between the parking lot and the waterfall. We were surprised that from the overlook you can’t see the pool at the bottom of the falls. This waterfall gets a ton of promotion here but honestly it is really not worth the “price of admission” $10 for parking and 5.00 a person.

    Kaumana Cave (Lava Tube)

Hawaii is amazing. We did a road trip in a loop (it’s an island so isn’t everything a loop?) and part way our GPS tour guide, who we now called Doug, suggested we pull off to view a lava tube. We did and saw this incredible lava tube less than 10 feet from the road! What a surprise. Doug said the tube was over 20 miles long. Go as far as you want to risk it. No lights, no tour guide and very limited signage. It was such a change to be in a place without “adult supervision” or a parking and ticket taker. We didn’t go far as our only light was our cell phones.

    1871 Lava Trail

We made it back to the Place of Refuge. This time I took the mile long 1871 Lava Trail. Using the National Park Service ap provided easy navigation. These lava trails were created long ago to provide a guide for people to find their way across the lava fields. This one was widened in 1871 (thus the name) to allow for two horses to pass. According to the tour, The village at the end of the walk was finally abandoned in the 1930’s as it was very hard for the locals in the two remaining houses to survive in their off-grid homes in the modern world.
It was only me and a few wild goats on the walk, again a surprise, and well worth the uncomfortable reflected heat off the lava. For an hour i had the thought that “this is Hawaii”.

    Rainbow Falls

One of the easiest waterfalls to get to in Hilo. You can almost drive to this view. The rainbow part of the waterfall shows itself around 10 am each morning. We were there a little after 1:00pm, but there was a small rainbow for about 30 seconds and my photo doesn’t show it. The cave behind the waterfall is a result of a lava tube that has had the top of the tube collapse leaving the cave. The tunnel and the collapse was thousands of years ago so we were safe.

Quality time to talk with my brother has been difficult to happen over the last 40 years. Eric has been on the east coast, I’ve been on the west coast. The few times we do get together, there are lots of distractions and time has been very short.
    This time was different!
Eric was in Honolulu for the week to show his wife Susan where he grew up. Pam and I joined them for the last day and half of their visit .
Not many action photos. We mostly just talked about growing up in Hawaii Kai. I learned many new things about Eric. It’s amazing how 40 years will bring focus to my life as a teenager.

Old Friends are the Best Friends

The Joy I felt visiting the Miller house, Anna Marie and “Mrs Miller” Jackie Miller, cannot be communicated in words.
This was the “go to” place for me my last 2 years of high school. Eric started hanging out at the Millers when he started high school, after I left town for college.
It’s amazing to me to think of the hours spent around the pool table, swimming in their pool and hot tub, and having dinner together.
This family made a real difference in my life. It’s a great Joy to spend time together again.

    Oahu… it ain’t Hawaii

Although we were only on Oahu a few hours it was interesting to see how vastly different it was from Hawaii and Hilo. Both islands were formed by lava but Hawaii was formed thousands of years after Oahu. The piles of lava that make up the mountains are so very different. The beaches on Oahu are sandy and, except for some that are truly surfing beaches, the waves are perfect and there is a good vibe. Lastly, Oahu has Waikiki. If you’ve never visited it’s a combination of Beverly Hills, Huntington Beach, and Carmel then mix well. The Hermes and Gucci stores set the tone and the beautiful surfer people made great viewing. These islands have something for everyone but you need to work out what you want from the islands before you make your plans or you might not have the experience you thought.

    Farm to Table Cooking Class

We found a great location for a farm to table cooking class. The location had everything. There are cabins for rent, a beautiful main house, and the farm is run by a co-op workers support.
We met our chef, Aiden, who walked us through the farm where we picked all of the veggies. We cleaned and prepped it, Then started cooking. The pineapple salsa, and the infused chili oil were great but the homemade naan was the star. Everything was yummy and we were most impressed.

This is the direction from our cooking class instructor at lunchtime.
    When I arrived at 7:30pm:
Amazing Jazz Jam with fans filling up the room and literally hanging from the balcony rafters. I’ve never been to a club like this except in some B rated detective movie. Everyone was smiling, dancing, getting along and enjoying the music. No cover, just provide a donation in the jar.
All this on just Monday from 7-9pm

    Atasuka Orchid Gardens

Orchids absolutely thrive in this area. The rain and the humidity and the hours of sunlight provide the perfect growing environment. The flowers are able to survive and thrive in this nursery, but they can also live happily outside in “the wild”. Mr. Atasuka grows many types of orchids that sell nationally and he ships internationally. He even has a few varietals that he created himself. The store is only open to the public Monday and Wednesday from 9-1 so it was hard to coordinate a visit but we made it.

A close visit to an active volcano

A Two mile walk was well worth it. We headed back for the third…. Fourth time? To visit volcanoes national park. Now that we have the golden pass, and the time, it’s both easier and obviously cheaper. The walk through devastation valley was our original choice but there was a park sign pointing to a longer trail down the original, now abandoned, rim road. We decided to walk that trail and we were surprised when we got to the rim! We were on the opposite side of the caldera from the Jaeger overlook that we had visited a couple of weeks ago, and wow, were we close to the edge. We also had the whole place to ourselves and we spent a long while watching the vents and the whiffs of gasses blowing around. Yes, we were safe. The volcanologist claim that Kīlauea has been in a non active stage since September.

    Imiloa Planetarium

The island of Hawaii is an ideal location for observatories. The mountains (volcanoes actually) are very tall 12,000 feet and with a small population mostly living near water level, the light pollution is limited. We didn’t go to the observatories. Yes there are tours that will drive you most of the way up, but based on my Ecuador experience and altitude sickness I wasn’t going to try it again.
Instead we visited the Imiloa observatory located on the University of Hawaii, Hilo campus. Sitting in the planetarium looking at distance galaxy’s and nebula reminds me how small we really are. A couple of the shows talked about how different cultures viewed and named the same star constellations and made the shapes match their own origin stories. Obvious, but something I never thought of.
We wrapped up with dinner at the restaurant connected to the observatory. One of the best meals we have had. Yummy and I had fish!!
