• Day 23: Snickartorped

    September 19, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

[Sorry to be late with the new footprint, but I didn't have enough energy for the phone (without sun I can't charge my devices).]
It was another day of paddling in fog.
After a good night in the forest with strange noises - snorting, sniffing (badger?), subtle roaring (elk?) or were they birds? - it was foggy again in the morning, but not so damp because of the forest, the holes in the boat's skin had been repaired. I packed everything up and off I went out into the fog again. Again I felt my way forward slowly. Admittedly, it is a bit nice when the lake spreads out so calmly in front of you! But I prefer "navigating by sight"! Despite everything, I made good progress: look on the GPS (google maps) to see where I am and where the next landmark (island or headland) is and how far away, then determine the direction and drive to it using the compass, e.g. 10 min 30° and then the destination usually appears shadowly in front of me... Eventually the sun managed to come through and I went along the long headland of Svalnäs by sight. But then I decided, where I could see some houses, to just head for one and ask for tape so I could take care of my broken rudder. I paddled to one at random with a fluttering pennant and was lucky to find the local residents, who also spoke fluent German. They invited me for tea and biscuits and together with Rainer, a German-Swede, we repaired it. I then decided to take the shortcut over land, for which he showed me the way and after this effective break I went on. Interestingly, it was still very foggy on this side (200m further on) and quite windy. So now I had to go by compass and through waves... That worked out pretty well too. Shortly before I arrived in Snickartorped, the sun came out here too. It was just quite difficult to find this paddling spot, so I had to ask four people before I got there. The last person who gave me information offered me a whole bag of tomatoes instead of a place in the garden and knew exactly where the mooring place was. I found it and laid out in the shelter. It was just a shame that there was no sun here. So again nothing could dry or be loaded. But I had a delicious meal of tomatoes, pasta and feta. It was another good day and made more km than feared.Read more
