    Coma Ruga Costa Dorada

    Sep 25–27 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Taxi delivered me to the hotel within 10 minutes. I checked in, paid local tax, and took the lift to the 3rd floor. Room 316 is a twin room with a balcony overlooking the modest swimming pool. I have a sea view between the adjacent buildings. Its quite close to the beach. I unpacked and changed into shorts and T-shirt. I went in search of a hairdryer and was successful. I also discovered there are local 'little' shops 15 minutes walk away. I had planned to go for a walk but I am so tired I postponed it until tomorrow. Instead, I went in search of a gin and tonic. This proved quite beyond the barman, so he went to fetch reinforcements. We managed. Dinner was at 19.30. I went down at 20.00. A buffet affair largely with assorted salad looking very tired. Potato puree, some sort of dried up fish fillet, assorted sausage. I cobbled together a selection. Half way through my meal, the room was overwhelmed with smoke. I thought we were all on fire......turned out to be the chef busy cooking 'bifstek' on a griddle at about 2000centigrade. Eventually, someone opened an outer door, and people began to appear through the fog. Needless to say, we all now smell of cooking oil! I was offered a glass of white wine. Drinks are free with dinner
. I suspect the only way to relieve themselves of this wine is to give it away. I couldn't drink it. I decided to attempt the chips...........wrong move. They were cold. In desperation, I approach the dessert counter. I pounced on a pear, had a spoonful of chocolate mousse and a sort of soggy sponge affair. The mousse was the best part of my meal. As I left, I asked if I could get a coffee. I was directed to the bar and was pleasantly surprised. Very nice latte.
I am now resting, watching Spanish News Channel, trying to decipher what they are on about. Thing is, I don't know if it's Spanish or Catalan🤣

  • El Vendrell to San salvador

    September 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Awake in the night with raging cramp! Finally asleep again. Woke at 08.00. Showered and dressed, set off to plunge into the delights of breakfast. Many more people than at dinner last night. May be a message there......
As long as the 'cooked' items were avoided, they all looked exhausted, breakfast was OK.
Fresh fruit and yoghurt, toast and 'spanish marmalade' plus a couple of mini croissants. I attempted the hot chocolate from the suspect machine. It dispensed said beverage everywhere except in the cup! It was far too sweet to drink anyway. I met a very nice lady who wanted to clean my room, so I let her🙂. I did not let her mop the floor. Not necessary.
Set off to explore. Overcast this morning but pretty warm. I walked to Coma Ruga centre, where I wasted at least half an hour watching 4 retired gents playing petanque on the beach. Very friendly we didn't understand each other mostly but enjoyed a lively conversation nevertheless........no idea!
Walked right along to the end of the Promenade and then meandered back. Tangled with very complicated cash machine ably assisted by a Senora who spoke no English but had adopted our habit of shouting at foreigners. We got there in the end. I have now collapsed in a beach bar where I am having beer, olives, and patatas bravas for lunch. It is getting windy, but I am enjoying the rest!
Continued my walk and came to SSSI adjacent to the beach. It's a wetland site where Kentish Plovers breed. There are masses of butterflies and dragonflies.very peaceful. Suddenly, I came to a National Memorial, picture attached. There is an explanation of the origin of the building. Reproduction of Picasso's work is stunning.
I am half way back to where I started, having a sit down. Much needed.
Went back to the hotel, a change of shorts and top and shoes. Set off to find a supermarket. I went past it twice and then saw 2 people go in. Very curious places in Spain. They are seldom easy to find and often look closed. I purchased a salad, yoghurts, and water. On the way back I purchased a pair of beach shoes. My feet are in heaven!! I also sat in another bar on the beach and had a sundowner sitting in the last of the sun.
My salad and yoghurts are in the hotel fridge until tomorrow. I decided to give dinner another chance. Same as last night but a huge pot of spaghetti and the chef cooking sardines on the griddle. Not quite as much smoke about, so I had 4 sardines and some dessert. Bothered the staff for a cup of coffee and called it a day. I have enjoyed today, and the weatherman is threatening 31 degrees tomorrow and Sunday. I think I might buy a beach seat for tomorrow. It's a sawn off camping chair.

  • Com Ruga beach

    September 27 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The hotel is rammed with children and families today. Very noisy. Took my time showering and dressing, charge phone and kindle etc. Decided to spend time on the beach. I went in search of a beach chair and got one in the sale! I then tracked down some medication to calm my stomach, along with blister plasters.
Found a good spot on the ⛱️ and soaked up the sun for about an hour or so. Became too hot 27 degrees, so headed back to the hotel to drop off seat and have a rest. Still suffering with stomach. Fell asleep. It was about 5pm when I woke up!
Went out for a wander as was cooler, lots if people doing the same. A market was in full swing along the Promenade so very busy.
Lin's plane was late leaving Luton. Then she got lost on the metro in Barcelona, only to find there was major disruption on the line to Coma Ruga! Finally got here at 11pm.

  • Lazy Sunday El Vendrill

    September 28 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Breakfast was a lazy start to the day today.Lin still recovering from her travelling ordeal. We finally set off along the Promenade towards Coma Ruga Beach. around 11am. Overcast day but not cold. We found a beach bar when our feet got tired and spent a good 2 hours nattering and sunning ourselves over 2 beers each! Back to exploring, we walked back along the prom to Sant Salvador. Took in the wetlands reserve and the Picasso painted monument. By this time there was a forceful wind blowing. We stopped off for a cuppa. It was fortunate I had a UK Tbag in my pocket. The tea we were given was incredibly weak. Sharing the tbag made it passable although the cold milk request came as hot milk!! After a couple of hours rest, we plunged into the fray to find somewhere to eat. Not difficult as most people had participated in a long lunch!
We are now back feet up totally windblown and tired.

  • El Vendrell town by bus!

    September 30 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The town is 10 minutes away by bus. A cooler day so good for a tramp about. First stop was the 17th century church and the surrounding area. There was a funeral happening/ finishing so we did not linger too long. The pics will give an indication of the interior. As we wandered round the immediate area, we came across many murals. Some on houses, some on walls of other buildings. The town is a little gem! The properties are mainly original, most with balconies. Winding streets. Totally charming and very Spanish. Had the feel of being lost in time.
We had a rest in Placa Nova coffee and croissant. In the square is a sculpture of Pau Casals seated with his cello. He is a famous son of the area. We managed to fit in a bit of shopping before we went in search of the bus home to Coma Ruga. Had tapas for dinner in one of the few restaurants still open. Very windy as we walked back. Bed by 10pm.
