  • Pitt stop

    March 28, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Early departure from Wisconsin proved worthwhile as we cruised through Chicago without any traffic. Then hit a sunrise over the Golden Dome as we passed South Bend- no pic as I was the only one awake 😛. One stop for gas, then some grub in Pittsburgh at Primanti Brothers, famous for their meat stacked sandwiches with cheese, fries, and coleslaw between the bread. The kids polished off everything, even grabbed some extra nuggets for the road. Millie’s bussin’ playlist got us through the last part of the drive (featuring Jelly Roll’s “I only talk to God when I need a favor”). We arrived in Viriginia to our hosts, the Donovans. Family meals always taste better 😋.Read more

  • Good morning Baltimore 🎶

    March 29, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

A visit to Fort McHenry started our day. Historically it’s known for its role in the war of 1812 and birthplace of our national anthem. In the distance, perhaps where the British fired at the fort more than 200 years ago, you could see the recently collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. We had dinner at the most eclectic Paper Moon Diner. Then off to Johns Hopkins for the first college tour of the trip. Well known for its research, the campus is a beautiful mix of classic architecture with green space. There were over 100 prospective students touring today! A wonderful Mexican dinner with the Donovans and the MU game to cap the night. Ring out ahoya!Read more

    March 30, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Noel, Tim, and Josie started the day with a tour of Georgetown University. Hogwartsian architecture is prominently featured at this Jesuit University. It was another HUGE tour group. Next, we met everyone else for some cupcakes at Georgetown Cupcakes… including the famous 2048 cupcake (note: ask the kids, I don’t get it). We had some time between activities, so we drove towards the National Mall. We did not appreciate that the cherry blossom/kite festival would be so attended. Beautiful views with thousands of people and kites in the air around some of our nation’s most famous landmarks. Driving past all of this, rather than fighting crowds/parking was kind of perfect. Next, it was off to Virginia to meet with Tim’s college roommate, Jim, and his family. Conversations picked up right where they left off years ago. Jim and Julia were amazing hosts. During this college focused trip, it was great for the kids to appreciate amazing lifelong friendships that are formed during college years. We capped the night with some homemade pizzas at the Donovan‘s and riddles outside over a fire.Read more

    March 31, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

The Easter Bunny found us in Virginia! It was great to celebrate with the Donovans at their parish, St Bernadette. Then a bussin band of Bradys for Easter dinner. We are being very well fed on this trip. It was great to catch up with Tim’s cousins and their families. The highlight was likely baby Aiden. Towards the end of the night Tim realized he was the oldest person at the party. 🤔Read more

    April 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

An early departure from VA to Philadelphia as we make our way North to be at University of Pennsylvania on time for a 930am tour. It rained all of the drive and most of tour. Blegh. We met up with cousins and toured some the historical sights including the Liberty Bell. Next, it was the illusion museum which was fabulous for all ages. We capped the night with some cheesesteaks from Cleavers and a dip in the hotel pool. DoubleTree downside- No truTv means no impractical jokers on the hotel television- a family favorite on vacations.Read more

Emmit joined Noel, Tim, and Josie for a visit to Villanova to start the day garnering a compliment from a parent- wow, such initiative for a sophomore! Villanova boasts easy access to both Phl and NYC while maintaining a quiet feel. Top notch accommodations for students, Villanova preached- veritas, caritas, unitas. It was a sad goodbye to the Donovans as the Marsho 5 made their way to Princeton. Another sloppy, wet tour couldn’t dampen our excitement. America’s 4th oldest university boasts classic campus architecture and style with BIG amenities and an alumni network second to none. Next we made our way to the Big Apple. Stressful driving made worse by even more rain. We found our hotel and tucked our car in parking for a few days. Noel found the perfect pizza place for our palates, Siena.Read more

  • Rain, rain go away

    April 3, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 43 °F

A cold, windy, soggy day of city exploring. Emmit and Josie led us through the NY subway system, but everything seemed further away than the map. Grand Central Station was a highlight. Everyone was a trooper trekking through Central Park. We soaked in the views from Belvedere Castle- literally. Then we reigned in our fears of hailing a cap- 5 passengers in a CR-V, fahgetaboutit! Columbia was windy and cold but boasts amazing libraries and architecture. A quaint campus on the upper west side with the nearby benefits of NYC. We went to the kids favorite restaurant, V Black Tap, for dinner. Known for their mega shakes, we enjoyed the 90s boombox music vibes.Read more

  • Conn/boston

    April 4, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 39 °F

We started Thursday with a drive from New York north to Yale University. It was a smooth drive as we beat traffic and were leaving the city. Yale was as expected, spectacular. By far our smallest tour, we were one of three families. New driver Emmit successfully navigated New Haven to move the car to come pick us up after our information session was done. The admission representative gave a refreshingly honest presentation on admission to highly competitive schools. The Yale admissions podcast gives great insight into what can be a stressful and confusing process. Early afternoon we made our way north to Boston and found time to check out the public library- WOW- as well as some shopping on Newbury street- zzzz. Early dinner was a hit at La Neta. Tacos, nachos, and guacamole… delish. Our hotel was few cold blocks to the Institute of Contemporary Art. Beautifully situated in the south Harbor area, we utilized the Thursday pm free admission to enjoy several exhibits, most notably multimedia whale exhibit.Read more

  • Boston College and a cup of Jo

    April 5, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 36 °F

The five of us toured Boston College Friday morning. Strong academics mixed with impressive architecture in the lovey suburb of Chestnut Hill. Gasson Hall is the 2nd most instagrammable college campus building in the US! After the visit, Millie updated her college wish list from- “I’m not going to college, just give me the money you’re saving” to 1. Harvard 2. Yale 3. Boston College and 4. UCLA (all after a break year so she can attend with her cousin Molly).
After the tour we followed Jo(sie)’s lead to Orchard House- where much of Louisa May Alcott’s home where she wrote Little Women has been preserved. We had a late lunch in Concord (Revolutionary War and grapes, Concord). Saltbox Kitchen’s farm to table style was a wonderful cap to one of our best days. No pics- it was that good and we were plate licking hungry. We left Concord to tackle some of the long drive home. And then things got a little weird.
