Ate ceviche carretera and empañadas de gallina. Both were delicious. The appetizer was exquisite: fish broth with lime and cilantro, Inca corn, and fried banana strips and a chile citrus salsa. Ceviche had posole type corn in it. All for 500P, including a nice pour of white wine and a lemonade.Les mer

Las Vigas is 1/2 block west of the Plaza Grande, square, on Calle 63, between 62 & 64. It is on the second story, up a stairwell at Los Arcos Hotel. Mike had ribs (good but not great; 135P) that came with fries (in Mexico?), a good small salad, and corn tortillas. Mary Beth had delicous chicken burrito (burrito Mexicana pollo, 60P) with thinly sliced, slightly cooked poblanos, something that we want to try at home. It was large and came with s small salad. Higher end seafood restaurant in Merida. Calle 47 por 52. Mike had chicken pipián verde. Mary Beth had dorado filet. Blue and yellow chips with green tomato salsa and finely minced pico de gallo. Side dishes were esquites (elote), rice with pepitas, thick black beans. Chicken had spinach flash pan fried in smoky oil.Les mer

Mike had cochinita pibil, and Mary Beth had lomitos de Valladolid. Small corn tortillas were the best of the trip so far. Cochinita is considered one of the best in the city, and didn't disappoint. Lomitos are small pork loin cubes in a thick tomato paste on top of a fried egg. Came with a white bean gravy on the plate. Lomitos were especially delicious, and a treat of which we were not aware. Went to this beach town with Habla friends Molly and Les. Beautiful boat ride in Ria Celustun, famous for its flamingos. Ate at Los Pámpanos restaurant, a beachfront palapa with great views of the Gulf, changing rooms and showers, and large plates of tasty food. We had mixed ceviche and filete de pescado al mojo de ajo. Delish, and did I mention large portions? Our driver for the day was Rafael, who spoke clear Spanish and whom we all enjoyed. He shared much about the food of the Yucatan, and good restaurants, which we mostly understood. He also showed us around the neighborhood where he grew up in Merida.Les mer
