    Recife

Now that Carnaval is over and the clean up is far enough along, I was able to see the city. Recife was originally just the port for Olindo. Now it's the bigger city. The Dutch occupied the city for awhile in the 17th century, and they are the ones who started building the city. The second pic looks across the old harbor to the sandstone reef where a local sculptor has several large pieces. Then some buildings in the old city. Next is the first synagogue in the Americas, built while the Dutch were in charge, and their religious tolerance extended here. Next is the warehouse where giant puppets for Carnaval are stored. Last is Republic Square, where most of the local government facilities are located.

    Olinda

Old city from the early 16th century near where Europeans first set foot in Brazil. The city's wealth was built on sugar cane. The pics start with an overview of Olinda. Next is the cathedral where Don Hélder Cámara was bishop. The altar was exhibited at the Guggenheim in NYC not too long ago. Then some street scenes. The houses are painted bright colors because in the days before house numbers, buildings were identified by color here.

    Metropolitan Cathedral

The architecture really struck me. The first pic shows the main cathedral and baptistry from the outside. The cathedral itself looks like an invert chalice; while the baptistry roof looks like the bread to be broken. Pretty cool. The bell tower was built to accommodate 4 bells sent by Franco from Spain as a gift. Then two pics of the interior of the cathedral and another from outside. The baptistry was in use for a baptism when I was there; so I didn't get to see itもっと詳しく

    Brasilia

National capital of Brazil, built as a new city begining in the 1950s. City is a UNESCO site. However, it is the city plan that has the designation, not any of the buildings. Many of the buildings and the concept for the city were designed by Oscar Niemeyer. First is a model of the city that tries to show the plan. Then 4 of Niemeyer's buildings: the national theater, the chapel of our Lady of Fatima (The first church in Brasilia), the presidential palace and a building designed per the original concept. The original concept for Brasilia was that all buildings would be on piers so that the ground level was open, public space. The last pic is a new bridge that has become famous due to its unique architecture.

    Itiquira Falls, Brazil

Brasilia sits on a high plain in inland Brazil. There are many rivers that flow in all directions. In fact, I'm told there are more than 1200 waterfalls of many sizes, from a few meters to about 150 meters. Itiquira is the largest. The first pic is taken from the base of the falls, while the second is from the ridge across the valley. A brutally difficult hike. The rest of the pics are views from the ridge or of the valley around the fallsもっと詳しく

    São Paolo

The largest city in Brazil and main business center. It is a very modern and cosmopolitan city with a large multiethnic population. The first two pics are from a tower along Avenida Paulista, the main street in the newer part of town. The third is of one of the few old mansions that is not torn down for redevelopment. This was the look of the old, upscale part of São Paolo. The last three pics are from the older part of the city: Republic Square, one of the historic buildings and another park scene.
