  • Thailand to Laos

    26 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We crossed the friendship bridge to enter into Laos and continue our journey by boat. I am currently sliding through the Mekong River and it is so beautiful! There are different tribes fishing, farming and washing items at rivers edge. The sweet calm that comes over you as you watch the world go by is enlightening. After a brief stop at one of the local villages we enjoyed lunch on the boat. The stop at the village was a bit disheartening as I believe there is not any donations made to the villagers as we intrude on their everyday lives.En savoir plus

  • Pak Ou caves

    26 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We almost forgot about the stop at the caves so we were pleasantly surprised but then the realization that there were yet more stairs brought us back down to earth 🌏! Darn stairs! So we opted to go stairs to the top first and work our way back down. So finally at the top and two of the cutest little girls are trying to sell us their two bracelets they have. We were enjoying cold cokes we purchased at the top and the little ones were watching those cokes with much interest. Teresa handed the one girl her remaining drink and the smaller of the two set her eyes on me. Well, it was the best half a coke I have ever had... lol.
The caves were amazing, with hundreds of Buddha statues in two separate caves in different levels. Many with their heads removed, clearly religious animosity still remains throughout the world. A beautiful site none the less. Back on the boat to head to Luang Prabang !

    26 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We finally arrived at our hotel for the night directly across from the elephant sanctuary in the other side of the river. The other guests were sent to another hotel as part of their reservation. We were placed on this boat because there were not enough guests on the boat we originally booked on.
The views... priceless! We had supper in the restaurant up the hill, I believe my bottom should be amazing by the time I return home as the amount of stairs and walking has been substantial. Lol. Seriously... bum of steel!🤣😂

  • Day 2 slow boat to Laos.

    27 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We had an early start and on to the boat we went. Rather chilly this morning but a hot beverage made it a bit more tolerable. We visited another village were they showed us that young teak leaves make a red dye for your lips and a rice whiskey 🥃 that has quite a bite ! You might just lose your sight for a couple days and maybe a few memories as well. I have another footprint for caves.
We are slowly entering the Luang Prabang as the sun is setting. The boats are scattered over the river as we enter and I feel like the female star in the titanic movie 🎥. Then suddenly our captain scares the crap out of me by honking the horn for the other boats to get out of our way. So much for that fantasy. 😂

  • Wat Xiengthong

    28 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Wat Xiengthong is one of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries in Luang Prabang which is praised as the architectural gem for its historical and artistic values. Built by King Say Setthathirath from 1559 to 1560. The glass mosaic decorations, carvings and paintings were just beautiful. The temples just sparkle because of the coloured mirrors used in the depictions on the outside of the two temples. So glad I came this far from the hotel.En savoir plus

  • Bamboo bridge to cross Nsm khan river

    28 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I am on the end of the land and of town and I am willing to cross this bamboo bridge, only during the dry season, to the Phonsaath village. There really was not much to see in the village but the bridge, besides being a little rackety was a neat experience and even a little scary. I saw an older lady crying half way as she did not believe she was safe. It cracked and banged as you walked and probably could have gone at any moment but it stayed for my crossing at least. My only thought was, thank god I can swim like a water rat! 🤣

Now lunch! Starving from all this walking and the heat.

  • Elephant santuary

    29 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I was waiting patiently for this event! So excited to have a one in one experience with the elephants 🐘🐘 and the great work this sanctuary does to help these beautiful animals from abuse, disease and beatings. We were to get a lesson on elephants and their habitat, the workings of the sanctuary them finally a trek with the elephants ending with lunch. Well the close experiences with the elephants were outstanding! We got to feed them, which we found out could be a bit slobbery! Too funny, they reach for another banana and You would get some back wash from their trunk... yuck! After some pictures some walking and more pictures. The only thing I would have added was more time. A very special event for me.En savoir plus

  • Butterfly

    30 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We finished up at the waterfalls and had some spare time and thanks to two well spoken young ladies they convinced us to walk the 300 meters to the butterfly 🦋 park. This park was opened by two Dutchmen who sold everything they owned in Holland and moved to Laos 🇱🇦 to create this learning centre for the school children and the public.
A great experience was had, they explained the process of the butterfly’s and showed us a number of them that would have been hard to find. After we were done a few moments in the market before we boarded our bus back to town. Note the video of the fan with a bag on it to keep the fly’s off the food!!! Very ingenious of them.

  • Waterfall’s

    30 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

One hour in the road and we reach the waterfalls. The driver has a rather authoritative personality with a slight scowl on his face as he informs us we have 2 hours then we must be back at the bus or he leaves! Take picture of Van number...take picture if van number he says then he drives off. His demeanour could use some work, lol.
We enjoyed the falls even though we did not go all the way to the top, enough up hill already. I brought my suit to swim but after a few pictures I realized that there was absolutely no plant 🌱 life at all. Not sure about you but if I see no signs of life I don’t think it is a good idea to swim in the water 💦 💧. I did finally find some fish and some black gunk that slightly resembled mold so I was happy to enjoy the views and take my pictures. The falls were pretty for sure. There was a bear enclosure as well to bring the plight of bears into the public eye and to better understand our intrusion into their territories.

  • Sunset

    30 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Relaxed a little before we headed out for supper. We walked another direction from the hotel to find a cafe Teresa suggested with a sunset view. After walking through a few scary spots and down, what I would consider a dark back alley, we made it to our cafe. The view was stunning as the boats gathered for their own views we enjoyed our last sunset in this beautiful city. The walk was worth it! I would definitely suggest a visit to Luang Prabang if you are out this way. Food was not as good as Thailand but I felt quite at home here with the pleasant people that I had pleasure of meeting, the evening walks through the night markets and the amazing massages at $20-35 for 60 minutes. I will surely miss this feeling.En savoir plus

  • Heading out today for Vietnam

    31 janvier 2020, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I totally relaxed today. A nice breakfast in our peaceful surroundings followed by a massage. Headed to the post office to mail out a parcel so our bags don’t get too heavy. This travelling light definitely has its advantages... who knew that it could actually be so easy. There is no way I would have ever thought I could have done such light travelling. It sure helps speed things up at the airport.
I will miss the tranquility of this hotel with the ponds, water lilies and a pool that is not below freezing 🥶. Not sure why that has been the trend but I would have been in the pools a lot more if they were not so dog gone cold!

  • Marble mountain

    5 février 2020, Vietnam ⋅ 24 °C

I think that you all should know that to pick only 10 pictures when you are surrounded by so much beauty is almost impossible. I have included two videos to show you a small portion of this extensive grouping of caves.
Again we have to climb stairs, many stairs and this is after we take a elevator up five floors already! At one point our personal tour guide asks if we wish to take the natural (hard) way or the easy way...I will give you 3 guesses, lol ready please. Some of the steps made of marble were just big rocks which made the As we travel from cave to caves each step, statue and temple are carved out from the actual mountain. Some of the statues are so beautiful and others are in a high location in the caves. We can hear Vietnamese music in the background if the monks are not singing at that time. Afterwards we have a quick stop in the town at the base of the mountain and we can clearly hear the monks singing again from the mountaintop.
