    An early, wet start

    September 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

We got an early start, but a moderate storm and a lot of people on the road, meant 3 hours to get the trailer. We even had to stop at 220th NW in Edmonds to pee in the trailer. The traffic eased south of downtown Seattle, rain abated in OlympiaRead more

  • KOA Campground outside of Albany, OR

    September 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Nice place. Not crowded. They placed us farthest away from the highway. Places close to the highway would be very noisy. The pool is being demolished, which was a little noisy. They have a dog run, horseshoes, miniature golf and a nature trail. There are long termers, but they are scattered out. This site is very convenient to Corvallis, OR. We took a zero day to treat the rubber gaskets with 303 Aerospace, adjust and improve the AC main duct (taped off the separator and corrected the orientation of the plates, programmed the newly installed MicroAir easy start which will allow us to start the AC with a single Honda eu2200i generator, placed various hooks for keys and jackets. Emptied the treated fresh water (the product we used made it taste awful) and refilled with filtered, softened water).Read more

  • Mt. Shasta Brewery

    September 29, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This is our inaugural Harvest Host stay. The parking lot was not level and we struggled a little to get to level in the spot we chose. We had to put the Anderson levelers on wood squares and found that the hard plastic was very slippery which made us nervous. We agreed we need to improve the wood blocks. The building is a former creamery and we had dinner there. Tried the IPA (dark color, clear, not very bitter, nor hoppy, but drinkable). The porter was a yummy coffee porter. The beer of the night for me was the Jalapeño Weed Ale. A pickle was offered and accepted and was placed in the beer. Oddly, it made the beer excellent. Had the Greek salad and meat eaters flatbread. It rained heavily during the night, which means we’ll have to squeegee off the sliders. Much colder here also, 47 F at 6 am. We were at 3/4 battery, so may not have to charge.Read more

  • Flag City RV

We got a good but damp start out of Weed. Really beautiful cruising down to the Upper Sacramento River valley floor. Rain in the lower valley across to Sacramento. We did see two other ORVs headed in our direction. This is a big, well run facility. Cement pads, lava rock margins and the largest trees we’ve seen in an RV park. Needed to dump the fresh water again due to chemical taste from the water treatment. We won’t be using that again. Also added air to the tires on entire rig. Tried washing the rear window with the Docapole squeegee with modest success. Will need to have a window towel and spray on hand.Read more

  • Dark Star Winery

    October 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Got out of Lodi in good order by about 9:30 am. Took I-5 South. The road is bumpy and patched down to Stockton where it got considerably better. Several tomato trucks loaded with fruit. Loads of smaller cars zipping past on the way South. Only a few close calls. Trip computers kept trying to take us off of I-5 due to construction, but as it was Sunday, we figured that there wouldn’t be work going on which turned out to be true. We took Hwy 41 West to get to Hwy 101 and it is in pretty bad shape up to the grade. Two lane highway most of the way. Made the mistake of pulling off to let traffic pass once. As the speed limit was 55 we were doing fine, but everyone else is in quite a hurry. 2/3 of the way we hooked up with the new highway being built and it was 2 lanes both directions and that let the sprinters pass. We saw the roadside memorial where James Dean died in a car crash, a collection of flags, sunglasses and bras. We were a little worried about the parking situation at Dark Star, but as we were the only campers, we were able to turn the rig around and get situated pretty easily. Only needed 2 inches up front to level, so left the rig hitched. Beautiful little place in the middle of several wineries and a distillery. Had a good time visiting with other wine guests, the general manager and the owner. Drank too much wine. It’s pretty dark at 6 am, but the 7 am dawn was pretty. The resident Huskie started howling at daylight, wondering if he smells Olive.Read more

  • Stanger Vineyards

    October 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

A very easy day of only 17 miles. Stanger Vineyards is on the East side of 101. Very nice older couple are the owners. The gates only opened on one side and I almost clipped the awning. Saw it, stopped and eased off, taking a little gate paint and a smallish dent in the awning cover. Waited for the owner to come down and disable/move the other side so we could get in. Great site..They used to have a lot more people camping here, but have moved to Harvest Host (nicer people) and fewer campers (county only allows 3 per night)..on top of a hill with very good views of vineyards, rolling hills and oak trees. Got fans going and managed the heat of the day well. Deployed the awning (worked fine) and saw we might have done that sooner to let it dry out from all the rain. Set out the patio mat and chairs and had a restive, snoozy afternoon. Decided to got out to dinner in nearby Creston, a tiny ranching community, at a restaurant suggested by the Stanger owner: The Loading Chute. We both had very good prime rib, I had a DBA and Peg had a Sauvignon Blanc. Back to the camper to let Olive out and then off to an 8 pm tasting with the owners. Beautiful morning sunrise! Percolated coffee and bagels, cream cheese, capers, red onion and smoked salmon.Read more

  • Buellton

    October 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Our last camp en route to Ojai. This place is enormous, with several different sections including a motel, tiny houses, mobile homes, tents, and antique trailers. Has a couple of pools, a big party venue, bocce courts, a kids water park, a cafe. We treated ourselves to dinner out at Industrial Eats (still great smoked beef tongue pastrami), Los Olivos Wine Merchant (not as great as we remember), and Ellie’s Tap and Vine (Peggy got a fun extra in her salad, I had the “tomahawk” spare ribs. Good wine from Sanford. We also got a text message that Emory Caroline Dacanay was born at 6:10 pm (Oct. 6). My buddy from Scouting and many backpacks, Scott Wolfe, who is city manager of Buellton, dropped by for a visit.Read more
