  • Norway: Aurland to Fjaerland

    28 luglio 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We bid farewell to Aurland today and also to our lovely AirBNB. We decided to take the scenic route - over the mountain instead of the tunnel through it. This would add a bit of time to our journey however given that over in Europe check in starts at 1500 we figured we had the time. It was a very beautiful and scenic drives with lots of stops to admire everything along the way. This included angry cows, pack ice and graceful waterfalls.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Fjaerland

    28 luglio 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We decided to head out shortly after arriving at our accomodation to check out the two nearby glaciers: Supphellebreen and Boyabreen.
Both were majestic and gave off waves of cold frigid air that really went straight through you. In spite of the cold, there was still beautiful wildflowers and an abundance of freely growing and delicious raspberries. A thoroughly amazing and humbling sight.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Fjaerland

    29 luglio 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We started the day off ready to have a hike somewhere exciting. We had a very dodgy map and a brief description of some local hikes. Apparently in this area hikes are indicated by a wooden placard.....we found the placard but no other sign of where the hike started. We thought we would try walking along the main road which also did not give any clearer sign of any hikes. I was able to take some lovely pics of wildflowers along the way so it wasn't a total waste. We also went back to Supphellebreen glacier since the sun was out and even tested the water.
The day was concluded with a lovely three course dinner. Soup was average (I hate soup) but the lamb and chocolate fondant were both divine.

  • Norway: Fjaerland to Geiranger

    30 luglio 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we would be making our way to Geirangerfjord. The drive was very scenic and lots of lovely sights to take along the way. A drive up to the Geiranger Skywalk gave some stunning views but also a pretty hairy walkway that looks straight down the side of the mountain. It was also bitterly cold with a strong wind blowing but that didn't take away from the views.Leggi altro

  • Norway:Geiranger

    31 luglio 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Geirangerfjord is approximately 15 km long and can be as deep as 260 metres. It is Unesco heritage listed as well and is a major port for big cruise ships.
We started the day with a hike up to a cafe on a farm (Vesteras) and moved from there to a lookout: Vesterasfjellet and then further up to Lostas. We came down via the main road which was a little nerve wracking given you had to share it with the motor homes/cars/tour buses. Still, we made it in one piece and had the rest of the afternoon off. Even though the temp was about 10 degrees it was a long and arduous hike upwards.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Geiranger to Alesund

    1 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we made our way toward Alesund. Driving out of Geiranger meant more hairpin turns but the road was pretty wide and allowed vehicles to pass each other pretty safely. Before we left there was a brilliant view back towards Geiranger and a glimpse of the seven sisters waterfall. After checking into our accomodation, we decided to head into town and hike up to the Aksla viewpoint which afforded a lovely view of Alesund as the sun set behind.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Alesund

    2 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

For our full day in Alesund, we took an excursion to Valderoya island which was a short drive outside of the main city. We were intending on attempting a short hike up to a lookout. Google unfortunately took us to a different walk instead which we thankfully realised before we had become too committed. We were still able to see an old prehistoric cave and a view of the islands through some wildflowers. Safely back on track (after I figured out the right place to be), we made the climb upwards to some stunning views over Alesund and it's surrounding islands. After our hike, we retired to our lovely accomodation where Kirk soaked up some last afternoon sun on the deck.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Alesund to Stryn

    3 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We farewelled Alesund and made our way back to Stryn (we passed it on our way out). The drive was fairly uneventful and after checking into our modest but comfortable apartment (might I add with an awesome view - second photo), we made our way to the Loen skylift. Apparently this is Europe's steepest Cable car and it scales a heigh of approximately 1000 metres in the space of 5-7 minutes. The views at the top were breathtaking and since we were there at 7 pm we had the viewing terrace to ourselves. Everything else up there was clsoed but that was ok as all we needed was the stunning view.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Stryn to Balestrand

    4 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We farewelled Stryn and started our 3.5 hour drive to Balestrand. The road was very foggy in a small section and combined with windy and narrow roads it was a little terrifying. Still, we made it out alive to the pretty little village of Balestrand. We had a beautiful view over the Fjord again and after dinner we went for a walk in the village. We saw the tiny little English church but modelled on the classic Norwegian Stave church style. The hydrangeas were absolutely beautiful and the nearby hotel was magnificent - on the outside. The rooms on their website appeared slightly dated and we all agreed our AirBNB was much better!Leggi altro

  • Norway: Bergen to Oslo

    6 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We bid farewell to Bergen and our trusty Suzuki that was a Toyota "Suzie" and boarded our flight back to the capital Oslo. After checking in to our apartment, we headed out to the opera house which appeared to be the place to be with throngs of tourists and locals alike. It was an interesting experience climbing all over the roof and seeing the Oslo skyline from the top. We explored along the shore a little and came across a groovy little hangout with eateries, performance stage, of course the ubiquitous saunas and a bar area all along the water.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Oslo

    7 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Our first full day in Oslo, we headed out to Vigeland Sculpture which showcased the works of Norwegian sculptist Gustav Vigeland. He completed his works in stone and cast iron and also designed the layout of how to display his works but passed away before he could see it to fruition.Leggi altro

  • Norway: Oslo

    7 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We then made our way to the Botanical gardens which was beautiful but marred by the sound testing of the concert next door. Saw some lovely flowers including different varieties of phlox, echinacea, flax and varieties I had never seen before. The evening we were intending on going to the Munch museum as it is free on a Wednesday evening but the line was out the door and none of us wanted to see art that much so we abandoned it and sought out some highly rated Tacos instead!Leggi altro

  • Norway: Oslo

    8 agosto 2024, Norvegia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we caught the train to visit the National theatre. After taking photos of what we realised was the back side, we walked to the Royal palace which was rather plain on the outside. After that we saw the local government offices (blue building) and saw City Hall which was a more modern building with beautiful art on the inside depicting the history of Norway.Leggi altro

  • Norway to Singapore

    10 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

We arrived in Singapore at 6.10 am after a 12 hour flight from Oslo on the 9/8/24. Needing to stay awake for the day, we headed up to Jewel after collecting our luggage - which did not have water flowing. We took a cab and checked our luggage into our accomodation and then made our way to gardens by the bay and toured the flower dome first which had a Monet exhibit that was quite interesting. Looked very similar to the Van Gough exhibit that was in Brisbane at one time complete with long powerpoint in a darkened room on different angled panels.Leggi altro

  • Singapore

    10 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

After the flower dome, we made our way to the Cloud forest. No big exhibits here but the plants were thriving and didn't have the light damage I had observed on our last visit. We met up with our family for lunch and had to retire to our accomodation to rest before heading out for dinner afterwards. We concluded with a durian feast on the street. It was a lovely (but long) day.Leggi altro

  • Singapore

    11 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

This morning we bid farewell to our cousins over a delicious breakfast but not before the obligatory cousin photo shoot. For context, we used to line up in age order when we were younger and of course had to replicate this. After resting in the accomodation for a short period, we then ventured out and met up with Meng Li and had dinner with her after exploring Bugis.Leggi altro

    14 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We are at the conclusion of our trip and we had a great time in the days up to flying back home to Brisbane. Meng Li took us to a lovely home and "Jeff" was so happy to tell us his passion with traditional instruments and costumes and told us the history of his house as well. We were also able to sample more durian - $38 per kg but 100% worth it. Our last night was a satay meal at the very touristy Lau Pa Sat. A little disappointing if I'm being honest but still quite delicious. Goodbye Singapore - we will be back!Leggi altro
