    Dramatic Flamenco Performance in Seville

We enjoyed another wonderful Flamenco show in Seville. This one was a little more upscale and the dancers, singers and musician blew us away. They were so talented and expressive, and conveyed such passion. We were fully enthralled for the hour that they performed. My favourite was the female dancer with the basket. We were not allowed to photograph or video until they did a short vignette at the end but their performance is burned into my memory. We are loving southern Spain.

Mescladis Paella Cooking Class & Dinner

We had a 6 hour train ride today to get to Barcelona. It is surprising how tiring a travel day can be. We grabbed a light snack and stretched our legs and then rested until it was time to go to our cooking class at Mescladis - Catalan for “mixed space” - which Is a G for Good supported migrant training kitchen and cafe in the heart of Barcelona. It features a unique feel that fuses old Catalan favourites and migrant’s home recipes. We learned how to make gazpacho soup, paella and the Spanish version of creme brûlée, and then enjoyed the fruits of our labour!

    Out and About in Barcelona

Barcelona is an incredibly vibrant city. The Gaudi influence is remarkable and we are staying in the extension (eixample) district which is full of very unique architecture and is a very trendy area of town. We cabbed it out to Park Guell this morning with a quick stop en route at Sagrada Familial, Gaudi’s most famous piece. Both were over the top in wow factor. We then cabbed it to Casa Batlo which was his first private contract for a residence, and the one he based around the water theme. From there we walked to Plaza Caralunya and then down the length of Las Ramblas. It was pretty crowded so we took some side streets back to the hotel and relaxed until 6pm when we joined the welcome meeting for the four new travellers who are joining us for the northern Spain portion. Sadly Rosie left the group as she was only on board for Southern Spain.

    Park Guell

Park Guell has its origins in an urban development project that was awarded to Antoni Gaudi by Eusebi Guell, a prominent Catalan industrialist. His plan was to build 61 houses for well-to-do families, along with a network of roads, viaducts and stairs to make it easier to get around the hilly terrain. Work began in 1900 and finished in 1914 with the construction of the pillared hall and the bench. Work came to an end in 1922, following the failure of the urban development project, and Guell sold the park to the city council, which opened it as a public park.

    My Gaudi That Was Good!

We met our four new group members-Anne, Quency, Cathy and Olivia and then Zuzanna took us all to her favourite restaurant in Barcelona, Taperia Catalana, for tapas. We ordered four different ones and all were scrumptious. The restaurant was located on Las Ramblas right in the center of the action and the street was hopping. La Merce festival, Barcelona’s biggest and most emblematic annual city-wide celebration, was in full swing with a huge parade and fireworks. After supper we made our way through the crowd to see the 3 Gaudi structures (Casa Batlo, Casa Milo, and Sagrada Familial) lit up at night. My Gaudi they were spectacular!

Logrono - Wine Tasting & Tapas

We caught the train at 8:50 this morning and arrived in Logrono at 1pm. Logrono in located in the Rioja wine region. Shortly after we settled in, we did a quick tour around town and visited a local family winery for a tasting. It was very interesting and we learned a lot, not just about the wine making process, but how to tilt the glass to check the colour, and the proper way to smell and taste the wine. The Hoplita Historic Vineyards has been in the family for over 500 years and make single vineyard wines from grapevines that are 90+ years old. After the wine tasting, Zuzanna took us on a tavern crawl to sample small plates of food, called pintxos, which are delicious and typical to this part of Spain. My favourite was the garlic mushrooms over crispy bread with a shrimp on top. We had 4 or 5 stops before hitting the jackpot on our final stop for cheesecake and ice cream. What a blast we had! The day might have been uneventful, but the night definitely made up for it. So many great unexpected surprise experiences with every city. Zuzanna is simply the best guide!

25km on the Camino de Santiago Trail

We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise in Logrono, had some breakfast and then set out on the Camino Santiago trail, covering 25 kms in 7 hours which included a stop for lunch and a celebratory ice cream at the end. I was super pumped to walk a portion of the trail and Gilles and I were accompanied by Chris and Bob as we walked through vineyards, around the lake, and to and from the town of Navarrete where we lunched. It was very picturesque and had a great vibe. We met lots of others along the way who were journeying towards their final destination. Everyone has their story regarding why they are there and we played the guessing game as to what was their motivation. A truly enjoyable experience! We are looking forward to doing another small portion tomorrow.

More Camino - Obanos to Puente La Reina

We travelled by private coach today from Logrono to San Sebastián, stopping along the way in Obanos to complete another portion of the Camino de Santiago trail. We walked from Obanos to Puente la Reina, a short but picturesque portion which follows the gentle flow of the Robo river, winding its way through green fields and orchards. The trail was well marked and well maintained. It was magnificent to absorb the tranquility of the countryside in this beautiful part of Northern Spain.

    Palacio Real de Olite

Our next stop along the way to San Sebastián was in Olite to see the 13th century Palace of the Kings of Navarre. This gorgeous grand monument consists of 3 sections, the Old Palace, the New Palace, and a church named Iglesia de Santa Maria La Real. We particularly enjoyed climbing all of the towers to catch the views.

    Pamplona

Our last stop before reaching San Sebastian was Pamplona where we got a bite of lunch and had a walkabout. Pamplona is best known for the Running of the Bulls (Feast of San Fermin) in July. We saw the street where the bulls are led by daredevil runners and the bronze monument of the event. It is also a major stop along the Camino de Santiago and I visited a shop where Camino goers could shop for supplies and pick up souvenirs and also saw many Alberques. The city hall building here was quite impressive and the streets were clean and well organized. Zuzanna did some of her university studies here and was excited to give us a glimpse of the city through her eyes. We had our lunch in the main square and sussed out the statue of Ernest Hemingway in the Iruna Cafe where he often did some writing when visiting Spain.

Fun, Food & Frolicking in San Sebastián

Our group joined up with a passionate local guide named Iri this morning for a 3.5 hour pintxos adventure which took us through two iconic neighbourhoods of San Sebastián-trendy Gros and the historic Old Town. We made 3 stops in each area, sampling a total of 5 savoury dishes and 1 sweet dish, as well as several drink specialties such as local wine, beer and cider. We even enjoyed a bonus round by getting cheesecake to go at the most famous Basque Cheesecake establishment called La Vina. This place is rumoured to use the original Basque cheesecake recipe. Iri taught us the art of txikiteo (bar hopping) and really helped us internalize the rich Basque history and how the neighbourhood still uses food and drink as a way to link to the past. She shared their culture and traditions and even taught us a few Basque words. We went to family run bars and Michelin- recommended spots where locals go. It was the best food tour we have ever taken. Each stop was completely different and some involved our participation, such as making our own pintxo called a Jilda and lining up to scoop up a glass of cider from the barrel when Iri opened the tap and yelled “Txotx” for free refills. The food, drinks and cultural lessons were all wonderful, and we didn’t want the fun to end, but the beach was calling and so we went on our merry way to further explore this charming town.

Here, There & Everywhere - San Sebastian

It was time to walk off some of the calories consumed during the food tour so during our free time we hiked up Mount Urgull to the La Mota castle and enjoyed the views of the city. From there we followed the boardwalk from one end of La Concha beach to the other. There were a lot of people still enjoying swimming in early October while others played beach volleyball. We even saw a few sand artists working on their creations. After some time at the beach we walked to Monte Iguelda to ride the funicular to a small amusement park and took in the panoramic views of the beaches and ocean beyond. We sat gazing out at the sea for a while before heading back to the old town to catch our evening show, Luminiscence in Ben Pastor.

    Luminiscence

We treated ourselves to tickets to LUMINISCENCE, a 50 minute immersive visual spectacle through time, where from our seats in the nave, we were able to dive into the secrets of the emblematic San Sebastián Cathedral. History, video mapping and 360° music united to reveal this building as it has never been seen before. The light projections extended throughout the cathedral, showcasing with finesse, every architectural detail, from its imposing base to the top of its towers rising over 20 meters high. It was absolutely stunning and spellbinding. We loved every minute of it!

    The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum in Balbao is a stunning building famous for its sweeping curves, complex forms, and use of materials such as titanium, glass and limestone. The architecture which is a must see on its own right, is the work of Frank Gehry. “Maman”, a huge spider by Louise Bourgois, is but one example of the large scale sculptures found on the outside. We did a tour around the building to view it from all angles and appreciate its beauty. I have shared a snippet of each of our favourite exhibits.

    The Living Architecture: Gehry Exhibit

Our absolute favourite exhibit was in situ: Living Architecture: Gehry. It exemplifies the way Refik Anadol explored the future of site-specific, AI driven art, where data becomes material and space becomes an evolving canvas of memory, form, and imagination. We were so mesmerized by it that we sat through it twice.

Sadly our Highlights of Spain tour has come to an end it is time to bid farewell to our beloved Zuzanna and our travel partners. Thank you one and all for the wonderful time we shared and the memories we made together.
