    Alaska Bound

    18. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Travel day to Alaska - Montreal to Vancouver to Anchorage. The approach was stunning by air. Beautiful snowy mountains were in abundance. I am already asking myself if I should have packed warmer gear? We met Roni, a fellow traveller in the hotel lobby who invited us to join her for dinner at the rooftop 49th State Brewery where we ate a very juicy, delicious Yak burger, and the treated ourselves to ice cream at Wild Scoops. Featured flavour was fireweed. When in Alaska, try typical Alaskan food! Can’t wait to meet the rest of the group tomorrow morning and to begin exploring this mighty nugget of impressive scenery in “The Last Frontier”.Læs mere

  • Hiking in Chugach State Park

    19. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

What a great surprise to meet this trip’s guide Charlie whom we had as a guide in Utah 3 years prior. Charlie remains one of our favourites of all time. It’s a great omen for the trip. We travelled along the Alaskan highway from Anchorage to Seward, destined for Chugach State Park. I love the trees and snow-capped mountains looming in the background. The train tracks of the Alaskan Railway skirted the waters edge of the Gulf of Alaska. We passed Beluga Bay and did not see any whales but were able to sight some white hillside mountain goats. We took a 6.2 mile (10 km) challenging but rewarding hike on the Crow Pass Trail to Crystal Lake, nestled in the alpine meadows. Talk about diving right in. It was steep in places and there was lots of shale from recent landslides. Wet from on and off rain and tired from navigating the “shale trail” we headed to picturesque Resurrection Bay to our tiny loft cabins which would be our home for the next 3 nights. We shared our room with new friends Jim and Jenn.Læs mere

  • Magnificent Glaciers & Seward

    21. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

I have a slight obsession with glaciers. Seward is a lovely town with a big park and walking path, friendly little shops and a Visitor Center that let us steal some WIFI. We savoured some fresh fish and chips at a local restaurant and later enjoyed viewing the fisherman’s catch at the pier and watching them cut and prep the fish for the waiting restaurants.Læs mere

  • Denali National Park

    22. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

After leaving the relative warmth of our cozy cabins, we made an early morning stop at the coffee shop and then travelled to Denali National Park and Preserve today, stopping in Talkeetna to explore the town where the Northern Exposure TV show was filmed. Loved walking the main street and waving to the train as it passed through. The town had a total hippie vibe. The scenery en route was beautiful. Once at the campsite we ate supper in the rain and set up our tents, hunkering down in our sleeping bags wearing multiple layers of clothing and our winter hats. 2 degrees makes for a cold night! We have not yet sighted Mount Denali and learned that only 30 percent of visitors do. Here is hoping that in the next few days we get lucky. Surely it will be our reward for braving the cold each night.Læs mere

  • Savage Alpine Trail

    23. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌫 6 °C

We got off the bus at the Savage Alpine stop to do a 4.1 mile challenging point to point hike highlighting stunning views and wildlife sightings such as grizzly bear. We started at Mount Vista near the Savage River end. It meant starting with the steep section but with pauses to catch your breath and rest your legs it was doable. There were great views of the valley and mountains but unfortunately no grizzly sightings. The trail ended with a gradual decent and we caught the shuttle to the dog sled training center to see a brief demonstration before returning to camp. A delicious supper out to a famous pizza joint put the cherry on top of the ice cream for today.Læs mere

  • Oxbow Trail & Denali ATV Adventures

    24. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After an early morning hike on the Oxbow Trail (1.5 miles) we headed over to Denali ATV Adventures with Neil to explore the Alaskan Boreal Forest and boggy tundra, observe glacial moraines and navigate rocky creek beds. We covered 20 miles in 2.5 hours on the trails with Neil at the wheel and the two of us hanging on for dear life as we us squealed with delight! Travel offers endless opportunities to step outside your comfort zone and grow.Læs mere

  • Horseshoe Lake Trail

    24. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We headed back into the Denali National park this afternoon for one last hike - the Horseshoe Lake Trail (2.1 mile loop) before calling it a day. Our last night group supper was at another 49th State Brewery where the bus that was used in the filming of “Into the Wild” was parked. Very cool, as was the directional sign for Sarah Palin’s house!Læs mere

  • Mount Denali & Iditarod Headquarters

    25. august 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Sadly we are headed back to Anchorage today but there were several highlight experiences on the way. The first was more beautiful scenery and a very clear sighting of Mount Denali in all it’s glory. The second was a stop at a strategic Mt. Denali lookout for photos and the third was a visit to the Iditarod headquarters where we met Riley and his dog sled team, got a ride around the practice track and toured the gift shop and museum. We truly are born under a lucky star. All in all the week left us wanting to see and do more in this magical state and we hope to return soon to continue exploring it. We are catching a flight to Calgary today to begin our next adventure- the Canadian Rockies. Goodbye Charlie …….until we meet again!Læs mere
