  • Ubud to Candi Dasa

    7 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We were treated to a late departure this morning (11am). It gave us the pause that refreshes. With only one stop between Ubud and Candi Dasa, we were looking forward to a free afternoon at our beach hotel. We visited the Kertha Gosa Hall of Justice, built under the Dutch Colonial regime in the 17th or early 18th century. A local guide told us many interesting stories about how criminal behaviour was repressed with very severe measures. One of the main buildings appeared to be floating but was only an illusion. The museum and grounds were magnificent. We hit the jackpot at the hotel by being given a poolside, beachfront room and had just enough time between a swim and dinner to indulge in another rejuvenating Balinese massage for $15 CDN. At that price, why not spoil ourselves a little. Our evening ended with supper at a local restaurant called Me and You which had a live performer who took requests and allowed some audience participation. We were all up on the dance floor till 10:30 pm!En savoir plus

  • Gate of Heaven and Tirta Gangga

    8 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Today was a free day and Megan, Margaret, Karina and I choose a trip to Lempuyang Gate of Heaven and the floating palace. Our driver picked us up at 5am and when we arrived at the Lempuyang Gate of Heaven we were number 25 for photos. The elegant gates, etched with carvings to the Hindu Gods, overlook Mount Agung, Bali’s most active volcano. Vera’s advice to get there at sun up was spot on as we only waited 20 minutes for our turn for the iconic instagram pose photo shoot. Others had to wait hours. It was overcast and drizzling but we had a blast. The next stop, Tirta Gangga, a floating temple, was a very tranquil spot and provided the Yin to the morning’s Yang. We were back at the hotel by 10 am with many hours to relax and enjoy the amenities.En savoir plus

  • Arrival in Lombok & Sasak Village Visit

    9 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We had a bit of a false start this morning as we tried to take the ferry boat to Lombok. Arriving at the dock at 6:10am with tickets for the 6:30am ferry, we were told that it was already gone and we would have to catch the next one at 9am. We boarded that one at 8am and it left at 10:20. Vera had warned us that the ferry schedule was made of rubber and could easily be stretched in either direction. Once again, she was right. It was a 4 hour journey and to be honest, it felt good to have some down time. Our visit en route to Kuta was a 100 person Saska Village of farmers and weavers. It was very interesting to discover their way of life , especially about the traditions surrounding marriage, and hear about the history of the community as we wandered the paths between the traditional homes. The typical ritual is for a man of around 25 to kidnap a girl, about 5 years younger. The two persons involved have discussed their desire but the kidnapping is kept secret from the parents until it happens, forcing the two families to make an agreement and give them a two day wedding 3 days later. During their 3 day honeymoon and when they wish to make babies, they go into a special private room in the family home, reserved exclusively for this purpose. The remainder of the time they sleep outside under cover with the other members of the family. Another interesting tradition was the eating of coloured sea worms every August and the ritual of the stick fighting competition that is held around the same time. The more blood, the more rain they are able to call up. We also learned that 90 percent of the inhabitants of Lombok are Islamic and their language is different from the other islands in Indonesia. When we arrived at our hotel we had just enough time for a stroll on the beach before it grew dark. Can’t wait to discover yet another beautiful island starting tomorrow.En savoir plus

  • Island Hopping and Snorkeling

    10 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We spent the day today on the water, first driving to the west side of the island to a tiny fishing village and then boarding a rickety wooden sailboat for our adventure. Our destination was the 3 pink beaches where we would be able to snorkel, swim and enjoy a bbq picnic lunch of fresh fish and other goodies. I got to ride on top of the boat and enjoyed every moment of the day. Out on the water we saw fishing “huts”, and oyster nets, a sand bar, and a small lobster fishing village where we made a stop to purchase some lagostino lobsters for our picnic, which our guides later cooked over the coals. The snorkelling was great fun as there was an abundance of corals and varieties of fish. We even saw a small reef shark.En savoir plus

  • Kuta/ Senggigi

    11 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We enjoyed a spectacular drive through the middle of a Lombok, stopping at the Tetubatu community to take a trek led by a local guide. We explored his plantation and saw rice cultivation. On our trek we witnessed a wedding negotiation taking part on the porch of father of the bride to be’s porch. The homes in this community were quite nice and everyone appeared to be happy on this sunny Sunday morning.En savoir plus

  • Benang Kelambu Waterfalls and Swim

    11 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

It started to rain just after we finished our lunch and the narrow windy dirt roads were gushing with water but miraculously our driver got us to the Benang Kelambu Eco Park so we could explore two sets of secluded waterfalls and take a dip in the fresh water at the second one. We were all hot and sweaty and looked forward to cooling off. The hike to falls and back out through the tropical forest was beautiful. We arrived in Senggigi at dinner time and enjoyed a relaxing meal on the beach, serenaded by a pair of local musicians working for tips.En savoir plus

  • Gili Islands

    12 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

We took a speedboat from the port this morning over to the Gili Islands, docking on Gili T, where our fabulous Vila accommodation for the next two nights is. We dropped our luggage and then boarded a wooden boat for our snorkelling excursion to see the turtles and the under water sculptures. The Bask Nest sculptures on Gili Meno are a unique underwater attraction created by renowned sculptor and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor. They feature 48 life-sized figures arranged in a circle, designed to symbolize life, connection, and renewal. We had lunch on the third of the Gili islands, Gili Air. We had free time in the afternoon to explore and then enjoyed another dinner on the beach, under the full moon.En savoir plus

  • Gili Vibes

    13 mai 2025, Indonésie ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

We had a free day in Gili today which we so looked forward to. The big thing to do on this island is to rent bikes and ride around the island, soaking in the sun and the sea and the shops and just enjoying the vibe of the place. Everyone is friendly and there is something for everyone’s tastes. We slept in, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, went to the spa and then met up with Margaret and John to cycle around the island in one direction, which stretched out the morning and then hit the pool, grabbed some lunch and visited a few beach shops. We then struck out in our own to cycle around the island the island in the other direction before returning to the pool. Met up with the group at the beach bar for sunset drinks and then moved on to dinner.En savoir plus
