  • Port Broughton and Yorke Peninsula

    9. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We stayed a few days at Port Broughton at the top of the Yorke peninsula in South Australia and explored the peninsula which was beautiful and mostly undeveloped.

Lots of quaint little fishing towns, beautiful coastline and sandstone building. With evidence of a mining history.Lue lisää

  • Eden Valley - Barossa

    13. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

We only spent 3 nights in the Barossa as we have been there before but we still loved it.

We stayed at Eden Valley cricket ground which had a bush campsite and was lovely and peaceful and we had lovely bush walks and the dogs enjoyed the cricket oval.

We met up with Stephan and Kate possibly for the last time on our travels, before they return to Europe, and enjoyed more wineries

  • Victor Harbour

    18. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Victor Harbour was a pleasant and picturesque town where Adelaide folks tend to holiday.

It had some great beaches , unique attractions like a horse-drawn tram, and a lot of nature, especially birds like parrots, plovers and penguins.Lue lisää

  • Robe

    21. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Robe is a lovely SA beachside town.

Lovely beaches (with freezing sea water off the Southern ocean) interesting rock formations, lovely sandstone buildings and a variety of great places to eat and drink.

They also have a fabulous coastal walk passing the Obelisk (coastal monument) and the old gaol ruins.

  • Warnambool and the Great Ocean Road.

    25. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The Great Ocean Road (also known as the Shipwreck coast) is a 243 klm drive along southern Victoria showcasing spectacular coastal scenery and rock formations. WW1 veterans built the road from 1919 to 1933 and it is the world’s longest war memorial.
We explored half of the drive before a detour up to Ballarat and will explore the east side next week.

  • Ballarat

    1. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We headed to the inland Victorian town of Ballarat made famous in the 19th century gold rush period.

The area was rich in alluvial gold and at the start of the gold rush up to 14kg of gold was found for every 30cms mined! Said to be the richest patch of alluvial gold the world has known.

We didn’t find gold but found wonderful wet lands, parks, botanical gardens and buildings.

We only stayed a couple of days as Kevin had to go to Melbourne for work (on the train) so didn’t explore as much as we hoped unfortunately.

  • Apollo Bay

    4. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We have been to many beachside towns in our travels, but Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria was one of the best.

It had an amazing coastline with large crashing waves. Our caravan park was right on a peninsual into the ocean with great beaches and rock pool walks, as well as a thriving seal colony on an island just out to see.

We also saw our first koalas in the wild! We were thrilled to find 4 koalas in trees by a river as well as by the road.

We also enjoyed the local town with a pub that was the southern-most on the mainland and a cafe with amazing vanilla slices!

  • Mornington Peninsula and Stony Point

    4. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We caught the ferry over from Queenscliff to Sorrento and stayed for a few days in the Mornington Peninsula, where the rich Victorians seem to live.
Our site was at Stony Point, a cute tiny fishing town with its resident seal Elvis and lots of very large black sting rays. We stayed on the west side of the peninsula and explored the town of Mornington and the beautiful coastline side of the east peninsula.Lue lisää

  • Glengarry

    10. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 37 °C

We drove through Traralgon to the small country town of Glengarry to stay with our friends Richard and Oonagh. We managed to fit the van on their driveway and had a great couple of days catching up and exploring the area which we really liked. The area was experiencing a heatwave (seems to be a theme with us!) and the temp was in the high 30s whilst we were there so lots of eating and drinking in the AC!Lue lisää

  • Eagle Point and Paynesville

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Eagle Point and Paynesville was our last stop in Southern Victoria.

We set up in a park on the edge of the large lake. It was very much back to nature with many water birds, especially swans.

We also took a quick ferry ride across to nearby Raymond Island which was famous for its koalas, and we saw many of them including a mum and baby!

There was also a quite distinctive feature of the second largest "silt jetty" in the world. This is a natural land formation of two thin long strips of land which went kilomters out into the lake. We had to drive all the way to the end!

  • Bright and the Victorian Alpine region

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We really enjoyed our drive up Mount Hotham and the Victorian alpine region, and down in to the town of Bright (even if it was really scary negotiating hair pin bends with huge cliff drops with a caravan)! The scenery was stunning.

The town of Bright was a delight with perfect Alpine weather and autumn colours. We took long interesting walks with dogs, did long bike rides along the rail trail, walked around the lovely town and river, and frequented the brewery (of course).

  • Canberra II

    22. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We got back to Canberra and closed the loop!

This was the last stop in our Big Lap and the first location we had been to twice. As usual Canberra was all about catching up with family, and getting organised for the end of our trip.

This included starting to get the caravan packed and clean, and getting the car serviced and replacing the windscreen which we cracked on the Nullarbor!
