    Wandering around London:

Morning walk along Southbank, Tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Looking at Art (and looking at people taking pictures of themselves 'looking' at art) at Tate Modern, People watching in Green Square and stumbling across the cutest church-converted-garden museum with great views from its tower.

Fun Fact of the Day: It's a bad idea to launch a cannon for fun in a building made of wood and straw.

  • Rugby and Coventry

    1 ottobre 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    Starting to head north:

Visited Rugby (the town where rugby was invented), but unfortunately everything was closed. However did see a few interesting statues and plaques in the street.
Moved on to Coventry, had a walk around the cathedral, which was targeted in the blitz and rebuilt retaining the surviving walls, where I received a suprise choir concert. Also went to the Herbert museum where I met Dippy the Diplodocus.

Fun Fact of the day: the game of rugby was named after the town of rugby which was named after the de Rokeby family, who had their 13th century moated manor house there.

  • Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon

    2 ottobre 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

    Picturesque Towns and Shakespearean Tales:

On my way to Stratford, had a longish wait in Leamington to change trains, so decided to look around and very glad I did. Did the towns self-guided walking tour, and it was gorgeous. It was like Manuka, but make it a city. In Stratford I went to Shakespeare's Birthplace, and 'New House' where a museum dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the first folio is. In the evening I went to a medieval pub for dinner, and then to the Swan Theatre to watch the Merchant of Venice. It was very good, and afterwards went for a drink with the people in my section. What happens when an aussie, pom and American walk into a bar? They all order variations of soda water and annoy the bar staff (we had a lovely time however).Leggi altro

In the morning went for a walk around the Stratford-upon-Avon canals and visited the Butterfly house (iguana spotted). Then visited Tudor World and the MAD museum of Mechanical Art.
Spent the afternoon travelling to Manchester where I will be based for the next few days.

Fun Fact of the day: Henry the 8th suffered a head injury that "changed his personality" and made him act wack.

    Museum Hopping and 'Lovely Weather'

Spent the day visiting Manchester's various museums; Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, the Science and Industry Museum (at a location that used to be a textiles loading dock and has the first computer "Baby"), the People's History Museum, and (my suprise favourite) the National Football Museum. Was told by some locals that the partly cloudy, misty rain and wind was 'Lovely weather' to explore Manchester (😶).

Fun Fact of the Day: Waterproof Fabric was Invented in Manchester by Charles Macintosh adding Rubber to Cotton to create himself a jacket to wear in the rain.

The Royal Albert Dock and Cruising with the Fab Four:

Went on an incredible sing-along Beatles bus tour (where I was the youngest by a long shot), then explored the museums around the Royal Albert Dock. The British Music Museum, Maritime Museum, and the Beatles Museum (got to go inside yellow submarine!), all of which are located in the former warehouse buildings surrounding Liverpool's historical main Dock.

Fun Fact of the Day: Why should you always visit the bakery before visiting a European Royal family? Because they're all into-bread.

    Moving from Manchester to York:

Bookended by a trip to the Casltefield Viaduct (an old railway bridge that is now a community gardens project) in the morning and stroll along the York City Walls in the evening.

Fun Fact: The Great Northern Railway Company was the first people to build tracks that go underground, so the trains could drive directly into their warehouse.

  • Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness

    9 ottobre 2023, Scozia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Day 1 of Scotland Tour

Went for a sunrise walk of Edinburgh before getting on my bus for the first day of my Scottish tour. Visited the Highlands Folk Museum (with examples of the buildings the people of the Highlands lived in through the centuries), the battleground of Culloden Moor, and the Cairns ancient burial sites. Finished the day at Loch Ness, where we are staying right on the shores

Fun fact of the day: Loch Ness has enough volume that if you had a time machine and took every person that ever lived, you would have enough room in Loch Ness to store them all.

  • Isle of Skye to Oban

    12 ottobre 2023, Scozia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Day 4 of Scotland Tour

Left Skye in the morning, and after a few stops to look at the natural Scenery, we had a tour of a Whisky Distillery, where we got to see around their factory and then have a tasting of their whiskies (I had never had Whisky before and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it). We then went to the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter bridge) to admire the view of the bridge and the neighbouring Loch. Last stop of the day was Glen Coe which was insanely beautiful. When we settled into our accommodation in Oban, my friends and I went to a Scottish Folk dancing night at the local bar which was so much fun (though did make me feel rather uncoordinated unless I had my friend Elley - who is a ballet dancer - leading me. I had to lead with most people though, sucks to be tall I guess).

Fun Fact of the Day: The Highlands cow was originally kept for milk, but its not very good at making milk so now it's uses are tourism and beef (in that order).

Fun Fact of the Day: I will update with pictures from this week soon I promise 😉

Exploring the Lake Geneva Shoreline with Richie

Took the train around to Montreaux (same montreaux as "smoke on the water"). Took a cable train up to Roche's de Naye, at 2000m elevation could see everything, including Switzerland's 3 biggest mountains (though they looked tiny from a distance). Had a walk along the water edge in Montreaux and visited the Freddie Mercury statue and Queen Museum.

Fun fact of the day: in the Alps there are heaps of empty shacks for hikers to stay in if they are stuck in the wilderness overnight.

    Road Trip With Mum

Left Richie and Barb in the morning and drove down to Nice throughout the day. Saw lots of cool castles and ruins near the road on the way. Stopped at thr Tete de Chien, which had great views over Monaco and an old fort at the top of the headland that we stopped at just before sunset. Had to survive Nice peak hour traffic (which was absolutely insane) but we made it and had a lovely drink and dinner at our hotel.

Fun fact of the day: Salmon Tartar tastes just like Sushi

    Day 5 on the Seine

Was feeling a bit under the weather so didn't get up to much today. Visited Malmaison however, the home of the Bonapartes in the time Napoleon seized power. It was interesting to see the difference in the styles of the rooms he designed (which all looked like military tents) and the rooms designed by his wife Jospehine (which looked like miniature Versailles rooms).

Fun fact of the day: the little boy in the painting of Napoleon's coronation didn't actually attend the event. He was Napoleons step-grandson, asked to be included in the painting by Napoleon as a way to indicate who should inherit the throne should something happen to him.

Left the boat and spent the morning travelling to Brussels. After I'd checked in, had a wander towards the old town and took the hop-on-hop-off toot bus around the major monuments to get myself acquainted with the city and learn some more about its history. Day to Explore Brussels

A lot of where I planned to go today was closed (today i learnt that november 1 is all saints day), so did the other loop of my tootbus and had a walk around. Had a hot chocolate at the Cafe and workshop of a Belgian chocolatier, before walking the "comic book trail" to see many of the murals of famous characters painted around the city. For other Belgian food, I was able to try Waffles for breakfast, but was unable to find any Brussels Sprouts for lunner (so had a train station salad instead 😞)

Fun fact of the day: Brussels is known as the comic capital of the world, being home to many famous comics like Tintin, the Smurfs and Asterix.

  • Amsterdam

    A windy day in Amsterdam

For my first day in Amsterdam there was a sever weather warning for wind and rain, but that didn't stop me from exploring the city! One of the buildings of my hostel is the old schoolhouse, which I am lucky to be staying in. I started the morning on a walking tour (luckily I have a good rain jacket), which was great to learn more about the city, including the sculptures on the front of buildings to indicate to medieval illiterate residents what kind of shop was inside and the sinking/leaning houses cause by the movement of the swamp . After being a bit outdone by the weather, I went to the Van Gogh museum, in which I spent 3 hours! My favourites were definitely the sunflowers (I even got a sunflowers inspired cookie from the cafe), though I did think the pokemon recreations of Van Gogh paintings (inspired by Van Gogh's love for Japanese art) was really fun too.

Fun fact of the day: the phrase 'filthy rich' comes from Amsterdam, where because it is below sea level there are no graveyards, so the residents historically got buried on mass outside the city. The extreemely rich however could pay for their bodies to be kept under the tiles of the churches, where when they began to decay, churchgoers could begin to smell them.

    Last Day Running Around Munich

In the morning went on electric scooters to and around the Olympic Park. It was very pretty, a lot of fun, and reminded me a bit of home (especially the Olympiaturm, which looked funnily like telstra tower). Had a look at some displays beginning to be put up for Christmas in town, and in the evening took myself back to the English Garden for a walk.

Fun fact of the day: most of the streets in Munich have a dedicated bike lane, which is a separated section of the footpath.
