Today we are on our way to Italy. All are excited to let this adventure begin. Some started with wine but I only got to observe some humble pie. Ronaldo forgot his passport and had to return to Barrie. Mr. Organized got caught in a tizzy and left the one important thing to pack. All went well and we still sat around for hours. Spent $17 on a tuna sandwich that was below average.Baca selengkapnya

Rome

Arrived in Rome after an overnight, great flight at 1145. Slept a little and felt like I was on Rome time. We took a private van to our apartment in a busy area of historic old Rome. Fabio, our driver, was very informative about the monuments and historical sites as we passed by them. They drive crazy here as if there are no rules or laws on the road. You need to pay attention when driving or walking. The afternoon was spent walking around and picking up a couple of bottles of wine. We had a nice chianti, which was very dry but smooth. Picture included of wine(14.5€). We went out to a nice restaurant for dinner. We were seated in the basement. The rock walls gave it a cozy Italian feel. I ate an el dente pasta dish with crispy pork cheek, periconio cheese, and tomato sauce. It was simple and tasty. The bruschetta was excellent. Crusty bread with garlic-infused olive oil, topped with cherry tomatoes, olives, and fresh basil. Wine was again a Chianti that was pretty much the same as previously. Ron picked up the bill. We all returned to the apartment and hit the sack by 830 p.m. We were all pretty exhausted. Great first day.Baca selengkapnya

Rome day1

Arrived at Rome Airport at 1145. We had an awesome flight that was quite smooth. I did sleep a little, which has been beneficial for getting on Rome time. We had a private driver from the airport to our apartment. Fabio was very informative when we drove by a monument or historical site. They drive crazy here and our life was definitely in his hands. Our accommodations are very nice for an overnight. High ceilings, an old elevator to the 2nd floor. Miriam, Jane, and myself went for a walk in the neighborhood. We came back and took pictures of the sites and home. We arrived back to drink some wine. We had Poggio delle Sassaie Chianti(19.5€). It was smooth but dry. We headed out for some dinner around 630pm. An early night as we are tired and have a journey tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

Cinque Terra day3

To continue, we took a fast train to La Spezia, which was quite a beautiful ride in the countryside. We would see little towns, and the next thing we were, by the ocean enjoying its beauty. We saw the Carrara quartz mine on the hills of Carrara. You could see the pattern of quartz chipped out of the mountainside. At first, it looked like snow, but it is just too damn hot for that today. A regional train took us on a short trip to Corniglia. We missed the original train due to a delay, but we had no issues. Ron tried a few times to see if Linda would get off the train to get him a coffee before it left for the next station. She did not bite for that, and we are learning that the sibling rivalry is only going to get worse as the weeks go on. The fun began as we stood in the hot sun baking, waiting for the town shuttle to pick us up and bring us to the center of town in Corniglia. When we finally got on, we were packed like a can of sardines. I sure said my prayers as we are pretty high up and the roads are slim.
Our accommodations are beautiful. All the single ladies have a full apartment with beautiful views of the ocean and town. The married ones have bedrooms pretty much, but a lovely garden terrace. Our first priority was going for gelato at Alberto's. 5€ for a large cup with two flavors. My choice was caramel and pistachio. There are so many flavors so many days to try it all. No one was disappointed. We enjoyed some local wine before going for dinner. Ron's wish is to have his Eat, Pray, Love story on this holiday. I quote him as saying, " I hope I find love on this holiday." He started by getting a single candle, but it is going to take much more than that, or he will just get burned. Our next blip was a mix-up with our reservation at the restaurant across from our door. Our mistake took us to a restaurant across town for dinner on short notice. CC for short came recommended by our Airbnb host. They took our reservation last minute, and the meal was a totally spontaneous fish dinner, head and all. It was an expensive piece of fish at almost 250€. It was served with potatoes, green salad with olive oil, and balsamic vinegar and bread for soaking. Again, it is very simple and enjoyable. We enjoyed a dry local white wine with dinner. Dessert was offered and taken. Tiramisu, lemoncake, chocolate cake, along with our first complimentary lemoncello in Italy. It is a panty remover compared to what we have experienced at home. The wait staff at the restaurant were awesome and did well with their recommendations. The town of Corniglia is quiet at night, and we were the loudest echoing off the walls of the town. We all went to bed after as we have a full day ahead for hiking, swimming, drinking, and eating tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

Corniglia, Vernazza,Monterosso

Well, today was a challenging day, so to speak, as we all tried to figure out the 7 of us. It started as a beautiful day, and don't get me wrong, it stayed that way for the whole day, but we had our ups and downs literally. Today was the day we hiked to Vernazza. A leisure hike, simple, they said, but OMG, whoever wrote that, lied in the literature. The trail was rock and stairs pretty much the whole 3.2 km. It was challenging, but we all did it. Painful for some, due to aging and injury. It was very scenic along the way. We all took in the breathtaking views of the mountains, Ligurian sea, and towns. We stuck it out to the end as a group, and then it fell apart. Jane, Bernie, and Nicole all thought that Ron, Miriam, Linda, and I were behind on the trail when we were waiting for them on the main street of Vernazza. Jane communicated and found us, but we had to find Nicole and Bernie. The search began, and we realized we had a breakdown in communication. We looked around Vernazza up and down the main road. We walked by a gelato place and stopped. I chose Cinnamon Gelato today, and I totally forgot who Bernie and Nicole were. After a failed attempt, we started off to Monterosso. We figured they would find us on the beach. We searched the streets of Monterosso with no luck. Searching the beach for 2 people is like searching for a needle in a haystack. We all then decided it was enough, we started our well-deserved swim in the sea. It's very refreshing. Low and behold, who do I see but Bernie and Nicole having a leisure stroll on the beach. We were reunited like two members had been kidnapped from our party, and we were whole once again. After a refreshing bath in the sea, we decided to get some food. It was happy hour. I had a pesto Foccacia and a thirst-quenching Aperol spritz. We strolled through Monterosso before heading back to Corniglia. Dinner tonight was a self-made charcuterie of coppa (100gms), prosciutto (200gms), and salami (100gms), olives, brie, periconio cheese. The wine was red and local and enjoyed by all. We had some great laughs before settling in for the night. The funny thing about today was that the turtle(Linda) won the race as the first person to to finish the trail with Ron. Slow and steady!!Baca selengkapnya

Barberesco

Tonight I am tired and it will be short. It was a travel day today and it was a rainy day. We left the seaside for some agriturismo in the Piedmont area of Italy. Ron's favorite wine in all of Italy. We had three trains to catch today. For some reason, Linda still needs 2 hours and 5 expresso to wake up for the day and we have deprived her of that. So much so that she thought it would be a great idea to hop off the train in Vernazza, one stop past our starting point to catch the next one. Thanks to Jane she pulled her back in before the train took off again. Ron didn't even ask her to get him a coffee this time!! We laughed so hard on that one. I guess a leash is needed for Linda. Bernie and Miriam were feeling a little woozy on the fast train. We thought it would be a good idea to test a TikTok theory I saw. They thought it would be a good idea to sniff alcohol to see if the nauseous feeling would go away. We only had a hand sanitizer wipe of 70 % to sniff. Verdict- FAIL! The picture says it all. We all arrived at Agriturismo Rivella Silva thanks to our private driver Giorgio. The first stop in Asti before continuing was a gelato stop. We had to feed Nicole something or she was just going to fade away. Hey, I started the day with Cherry Crunch gelato, it's like yogurt with fruit and that's my story I am sticking to it. After arriving at our accommodations, which is beautiful even in the rain. We took pictures of the grape fields and basked in its beauty. We had a winery tour and tasting session. Enrico, the son of the winery owner shared his wealth of knowledge with us about the region, family involvement, the winery old and new, grapes, wine-making, and taste-testing. Boy did we enjoy a nice Barbaresco, thanks to Ron? He is in heaven today, a kid in a candy shop! Thanks, Ron for letting us share your dream portion of the trip. Talk about dreams, Nicole is dreaming of food. Of course, while the rest of us live like we are intermittent fasting, she can't afford to lose weight like the rest of us. We have to feed this girl! We walked into Barbaresco to Koki Wine Bar for a light dinner. Can you imagine we went to a wine bar and didn't order any wine? To be honest we all had enough this evening and want to have an early night. We have a big day tomorrow having a homecooked meal and a tour of the area.Baca selengkapnya

Barolo

Today we had a private driver, Giorgio, take us to Barolo for wine tasting. Our day started with a wonderful breakfast at our Agriturismo. We enjoyed fresh bread, including the best Foccacia I have ever tasted. We were well treated to fruit, yogurt, juice, and omelets, all locally sourced. We left early and walked around La Morra to enjoy the spectacular views of the grapevines on the hills in a 360 view. You could never capture the beauty in a photo that you see with your own eyes. We visited 2 castles, one of which had an interactive museum about the history of wine-making throughout time starting with honey(Mead). The other castle belonged to the first Prime Minister of Italy. It was okay but it was not the highlight of the day. Just before that castle, we had the most disappointing meal of our life. Only joking it was the opposite. We went to La Cantinetta in Barolo. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch that included a raw sausage/cream cheese appetizer, veal with tuna cream sauce. The next course was our pasta dish which was light and tasty but the next dish was my favorite mushroom risotto, ending with a light-tasting delicious panna cotta with raspberries. Mama Mia. Our waiter was the owner and took great care of us with his generosity and humor. The meal itself was an experience of all our senses. We just didn't want it to end but our bellies were full. The next wine tour brought us to Marchesi di Barolo winery. Compared to yesterday's wine tour this was more corporate than local. The wooded barrels were twice the size and produced 1 million liters per year. At this point, we were all fading. We returned to Rivella Silva with some wine and groceries to enjoy by the pool. The weather was not the greatest today but the rain held off. We had no blips in our day today and it was enjoyed by all thanks to Giorgio riding us around. Tomorrow we head to Milan for the night.Baca selengkapnya

Milan

Day 6 was a travel day from Barbaresco to Milan. It was an early start. Part of a hilarious moment when Bernie announced that Nicole's beaver was hanging out. We all laughed as he adjusted it. Okay so apparently Nicole's beaver is the back covering of her knapsack. She was glad that he cleared that up. When we arrived in Milan we had to figure out the Metro. We were spinning but the thoughts of the TTC helped a lot and the map. It is a pretty good system. Our destination was the party spot of Navigli. It is a canal area of bars and restaurants. We stopped and enjoyed food and drink. We were awaiting terrible weather but it overpassed us for an hour. Newcastle football team( British) made it to the finals and were chanting and stomping "We are going to Milano" over and over. Quite exciting. Next was Duomo and the Galleria shopping center of high-name brands. The rain came down the lights came on and we headed back to our Airbnb. A light snack, a nightcap of wine, and we all died in bed.
Today we did the "Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci. It is spectacular and the preservation of it is interesting. The history and hidden messages in the painting are fascinating. We continued the tour through Milan visiting churches, castles, parks, the Duomo, and Galleria, and ending at the statue of Leonardo da Vinci. Lunch was by the Galleria, Ristoranta da Gennaro. All of us enjoyed our meal. Caprese like
Pizza was my lunch today and was very good. Some enjoyed Ceasar's salads, and gnocchi. No complaints from anyone. We stored our luggage today by the train station and finding it was a struggle. We walked a little farther than expected with our luggage on. So today we earned our gelato. We left Milan in the late afternoon for Verona via fast train. Our accommodations are fabulous. It is an apartment on the second floor (more stairs). Very modern and she left us a bottle of wine and water. My favorite place so far. Not far either to the train station or the Pl za Bra. Went for an evening walk like the Italians do and of course got our gelato. It was the end of a wonderful day and our looking forward to tomorrow's Verona adventures.Baca selengkapnya

Verona

Well, we arrived in Verona in the early evening and had to do a 20-minute walk from the train station to our Airbnb. It is quite exhausting lugging our backpacks everywhere. I am feeling a lot stronger as the days go on, but this Jillian Micheal's weight-loss program sucks a big one!! So, being the sabbatoger that I am, gelato was dinner tonight. From all the walking we did today in the heat and catching a train, no one felt like eating. We went for our dinner a short distance away in Plaza Bra. Returned and went to bed. Our accommodations are beautiful here in Verona. Very modern and contemporary in an old building. If too many electrical items are on, we blow the circuit breaker. Verona is the city of love ❤️ due to the fictional story of Romeo & Juliette. A city that is skipped by many tourists because it is underrated. I loved Verona and its leisure lifestyle. People take walks at night, sit in a trattoria, and just people watch. Everywhere you turn, there are neat things to see. From the hilltop, you can see the old city encapsulated by the clay running water of the river and more industrial on the outside. It is beautiful and I felt very comfortable walking around. On day 2 of Verona, we did a food, and wine tasting/history tour. Our guide, Alicia, was very informative and funny with her tidbits of history and folklore. We enjoyed pastries and sweet and savory snacks. A nice pasta lunch with a local Valpolicella. A wine and cheese shop with a tasting of Valpolicella, and Amarone. Finally a gelato stop. We met wonderful people on the tour.Baca selengkapnya

Venice

Today, we arrived early in Venice via fast train. Figuring out the Vaporetto system is a task in itself. This is where you decide if you go up the canal or down the canal. Getting to our Airbnb was a little challenging, but we ended up by chance in front of Poggi restaurant. The Airbnb is huge and a mixture of old and contemporary, along with its canal. Day 1 in Venice was a day of getting lost in the many mazes of the city. We met a flirtatious bar server who picked on Miss I Don't Know (Jane). The discovery of a new refreshing drink Hugo was great. A visit to Aqua Liberia was a crowded one but perfect for a great group picture. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner by the canal outside that evening. Day 2, we ventured out to Burano taking photos of the colorful homes. It is popular for lace but none of us are interested in buying it. It was also lightly raining but only in short bursts. Sometimes, the unplanned plans are the best plans. Murano was next, and we were fortunate to have a private tour of how Murano glass products are made. The heat in those rooms is hell in itself now, I would hate to see what July would be like. A few trinkets were bought. It was an exhausting day walking around visiting the hospital front in Venice. Coincidently, the Island of San Michele (the cemetery) is directly across from the hospital. Exhausted, we had pizza, and all went to bed. Day 3 was Tour Day, an understatement of events today. First, we visited St. Mark's Square, where Bernie fulfilled his dream of dancing in the square. No cares in the world. We toured the Doge, prison, crossing the Bridge of Sighs, and St. Mark's Basilica. Excessive art on the ceilings and walls and a sore neck looking at it. Our tour guide was very informative but dry. We ended our tour on the Terrace of St. Mark's overlooking Venice. The real adventure started looking for Lorenzo Quinn's Building Bridge sculpture. It was on the far end of the island. Unfortunately, we have not eaten at this point, and finding it was not an easy task. I noticed that Italians say everything is 10 minutes away when it could be 30. This trip was not good due to not having bathroom access or being hungry. After finding blocks in our walk, we finally got on the Vaporetto and toured the outside of the island. We finally saw it from the water. Beautiful!! The benefit of this trip was that we were able to see the outside of Venice via boat. Our Vaporetto pass was money well spent. We traveled the canal and outside. This was my all-time favorite thing that we did in Venice.Baca selengkapnya

Bologna

Arrival in Bologna was early and not too far from Venice. The weather has been fantastic, not too hot, and a breeze that is just comfortable. We had a cheap taxi ride to our accommodations with a helpful driver. We are staying in an old area and close to the oldest university in the world(1088). It is a nice walk down a cobblestone street shared by both cars and people with the utmost respect for each other. When your room is not ready on arrival, you go for a drink, or an Aperol spritz or cappuccino no matter what time of the day it is. After dropping our bags off, we headed off on an adventure to look for food and drink, Bologna is a gastronomic dream. The city Square of Plaza Maggoria was crowded with people enjoying the Francescano festival. It overflowed to the streets in the area. It was difficult to find a place to eat outside on the street for 7 people. One restaurant sat us in a room, our expectations high for our first meal in Bologna. The meal of pasta bolognese, which it is famous for was good but the service was terrible. We had to set the table ourselves. No utensils before the food arrived, or glasses for wine. It just did not leave a great first impression. Since our accommodations did not have a kitchen or living room, we brought back snack foods and wine for the evening. We also found the gelateria recommended to us below the two towers in Bologna. We have yet to miss a day of gelato.Baca selengkapnya

Bologna day 15

Day two in Bologna was a tour day of the Anatomical Theatre(yr 1637) It was a room dedicated to teaching doctors anatomy by doing secretive autopsies. The church disapproved of these actions. It is a marble slab surrounded by those who share their knowledge of anatomy. We also discovered Janes favorite saying. After that, we walked the streets for lunch. Miriam was looking for a charcuterie plate of Mortadella. It was found at a deli in which we all pigged out on sandwiches of fresh bread with deli meat of Mortadella, salami, and cheeses with Valpolicella Classico. We all died and went to heaven enjoying that lunch. After we continued our walks through the fresh fruit and vegetables market. Stopping for a drink before going on a tour proved to be a treat in itself. All we wanted was an expresso martini. Boy, did I piss the waitresses off? Who knew that the only drinks you could order in Italy had to be pictured on a menu? Expresso was delivered and when we said no she got all upset. I knew something was wrong when she just didn't get what we wanted in the first place. She just had to point out in the menu the list of drinks only allowed with a " why you do that. " Me bad..... I downed a beer and quickly left. The others sure didn't let me down on that one. We all decided to do a hop-on hop-off tour of Bologna but proved to be a sleep fest for all of us. The beer had nothing to do with it. It was nice to see other parts of the town but it was snooze time for all of us. We have a busy day going to Florence tomorrow to start our 7 days in Tuscany.Baca selengkapnya

Tuscany day 16

A short train trip from Bologna started with a blip as the cab company only sent one cab instead of two. Ron, Miriam, and I were left behind. We all rejoined each other about 30 minutes later at the train station. We arrived in Florence by train and stored our bags for a few hours. We went to see David at the Academia Galleria. It was busy, but we were all able to take in the strong beauty he is. I was always fascinated by the fact that when David was created human anatomy was not well known and yet it is captured so well, especially the veins which are bigger than some of David's other parts if you know what I mean. We also observed some other creations in the museum including a beauty called Grateful, which pretty much sums up my whole trip with what it has given me so far. I am sure that we had gelato before heading out of town. It does not go well if it is missed. Well, the trip from Florence Airport Car Rental to our accommodations outside of Siena was truly the most frustrating adventure of our trip so far. Driving is scary in Italy, and our Google Maps didn't want to cooperate. We all saw a whole other side of some people in the group that my mother wouldn't believe. You know who you are! We passed our villa on the highway, and we thought that was it, but we ended up in a town separated by two cars and lost. Of course, that villa on the hill was ours. Once we found our villa, we stopped to enjoy the fresh air and the breathtaking view of Siena. All of us are quite excited about our accommodations. We all watched the sunset, and our frustrating day was over, or so we thought. Ron, Linda, and I decided to go get a few groceries while the others awaited in the Cassetta Bar. We did not get far before Google Maps' directions disappeared. In total frustration, wine was more important than grocery shopping. Back to the bar we went to, and all our worries disappeared. Having dinner outside in the beautiful evenings is becoming a favorite for everyone. We just relax and enjoy all that is given to us at that moment. Dinner was the bar special. An exceptional ravioli with ragu and very cheap good wine. The waitress was very accommodating in assisting the non-Italian-speaking woman at the bar to speak with us. She was happy for the customers as it was not busy. All of our frustrations were gone for the day. The next morning was a day to gather groceries, and Bernie, Nicole, and Jane went into Siena. I just laid around monitoring the laundry and writing. No one wanted to do much, but relax and rejuvenate and enjoy our location on the hill. Our evening deserves its entry.Baca selengkapnya

Florence

Today was our trip to Florence to do the Santa Maria del Fiore Duomo, Baptistery, Uffizi Museum, and Leather School. Since driving to Florence is taking your life in your hands we all came to the conclusion train is our best option. Again Florence is hot with a nice breeze but congested with people everywhere. We enjoyed breakfast at Sophie Loren cafe before going to the dome. I was hesitant to climb and did not make my decision until I was forced to at the bottom of the stairs. All of us climbed except Miriam and Linda. They are medieval stairs with narrow halls and corkscrew staircases. All 463 stairs are one way with only a few peeks out the windows for a breeze and catch your breath. They have balconies on the way up and down that surround the inside of the dome to admire the paintings on the ceilings. It amazes me how the men could paint these ceilings upside down at such a height that you would hate to forget a brush. I was feeling a little off just from the height and thank god it was a secure stone balcony. I had two rewards once I completed those stairs. One was the beautiful view of Florence and the cool, refreshing breeze. The other was the accomplishment of climbing those stairs not being short of breath or having sore legs. My endurance has improved on this trip and I feel great. Just need to keep it up when home. The Baptistery is made of marble on the outside with a door of pure gold. The inside was under construction. Not so exciting. Next was the Uffizi with all its art from the Renaissance and going forward. Seeing advancement in painting techniques over the years. I didn't find the Rick Steeves app helpful in the Museum because the paintings moved from the rooms of the recording, making it difficult to follow. It was nice to see Botticelli's Birth of Venus. On completion of that Museum, we met up, and the guys went to the Museum of Galileo, the girls searching for the Leather School. Both enjoyed the separation. Before leaving we had to have gelato and visit the Ponta Vecchio Bridge. This is the jewelry mecca of Florence. It's a version of Venice's Rialto Bridge. Our stroll back to the train station was a crowded one but we heard a busker singing opera in the street. I could have sat down with a glass of wine and listened to him all night. Talk about wine, we have had our eyes on the lookout for a wine window. It would have been a disappointment if we had not found one. We did but it was closed, thank goodness someone pointed out the one down the street. We just had to stop as it was an Italy bucket list item. We enjoyed a Valpolicella on the side of the road trying to avoid getting hit by a car or bike. Once finished we rushed to the train station missing the train by minutes. We sat outside in the cool air watching people struggle with their luggage up and down the stairs. What was to be an hour-and-a-half train trip turned into a 3-hour tour. Once on the train, we ended up with an emergency delay due to the previous train. All of us were falling asleep on the train hoping to crash soon at home. Unfortunately for Bernie's car that was not the case. They had a close encounter with a head-on bus, and getting out of the train station. Bernie was fried on arrival at home. We all had the intention of going to bed due to the exhaustion but no we downed a bottle of limoncello for hs sedation. Goodnight!!!Baca selengkapnya

Today I had the honor of driving with Bernie and Nicole in the standard car. It was highly recommended by Miriam and Jane. They would always come back from the drive in hysterics. Bernie and Nicole had more of a nervous what the fuck just happened laugh, wishing they could just have a nice leisurely drive in the country, enjoying the view. Our trip started after a slow start this morning deciding to go to Montalcino. Directions were placed in Waze and off we went, enjoying a beautiful Tuscan drive. The hills were rolling and freshly plowed. Cypress trees line driveways and property lines. It is a gorgeous day and everything seems to be neatly in place. The Italians take so much pride in keeping their property clean and tidy. Their roads are well-maintained and so many roundabouts that I will be a pro at them when home. Waze gave us the best route but only to here. We ended up riding this one-vehicle gravel road with no way but to go forward and a view so glorious we almost shit our pants. It was a nerve-racking experience but I kept my lips sealed and full trust in Bernie's re-virginated standard driving skills. Montalcino is beautiful high on the hills. All the homes are made of stones from medieval times. Lots of stairs to climb and a view for miles. Lunch was in a restaurant with a view of what romance and dreams are made of. We had a tasty Tuscan vegetable soup, Caprese salad, and of course the wine of the region Brunello. I so enjoyed the soup that I looked it up on Google for a recipe. We entered a few stores and walked around to strengthen our endurance for exercise. Getting out of town was a challenge in itself. Everywhere you turned there was a vehicle or people in the most inconvenient areas. Of course, Waze brought us back to the dirt road that we did not want so we turned around. We all agreed to follow the bus out of town and it got us home safe and sound. No road seemed like the same coming back. I guess that was God's way of saying "You wanted to see Tuscany, you're going to see Tuscany." It's wine time!!! Tonight we sat outside under the Tuscan full moon drinking today's wine and leftovers from our home-cooked meal from two nights ago. It is breezy this evening and I only wish we had an outdoor fire to go with it.Baca selengkapnya

Siena

The rest of us get to see Siena today in its glory instead of staring at it from a distance. The drive is not as bad as Bernie, Nicole, and Jane have been there already. It is a warm beautiful day and the tourists are out in full force. We walk towards the center of town the ll Campo. It's a curved center like a shallow bowl, this is where they have their by-yearly famous horse races. Now it is surrounded by shops and restaurants. Of course, we arrived in front of our favorite shop the Gelateria. It's gelato time! After we go in search of the torture museum. For a small fee, we see all the ways people were tortured. Humans can be quite barbaric and cruel. Now psychopaths have a bible on how to torture and kill with the history collected. People would be tortured for some of the simplest things, I would be dead now, and thank god we have evolved over the centuries for freedom of speech. After we walked to discover little things about Siena, like how difficult it is to get around with a vehicle (not us) and a festival going on that evening. Talking about vehicles, we found our Vespra to take our photo with. We were a total embarrassment for Ron but it was all done with a lot of laughs. We had drinks to discuss dinner plans. All of a sudden you could hear a marching band and a parade of people in the streets ending in ll Campo. We went to a place for Steak Florentine that was at the bottom of Siena I swear. A quaint spot, not busy at all due to the locals being at the festival. It happened to be a victory party for the owner of the last winning horse race. They sure go all out! The steak dinner was awesome and not for those who don't want their steak dead. It is done rare and comes as 1-2 kg of T-bone meat. We left feeling good and not overly stuffed which was good for the walk uphill. It was an enjoyable day.Baca selengkapnya

Balloon Ride

This morning, I did a bucket list item that I have wanted to do since the late 80s with the International Balloon Festival in Barrie. I was always fascinated by all the balloons that floated through the city or past the windows at work looking so majestically. Bernie, Miriam, and I left the villa at 5:20 a.m. on an open highway for our liftoff destination somewhere close to Florence. The weather was awesome, cool but clear. We are the first to arrive, and the field is dark. We see a truck pass by with a basket, and we follow it. We watch them set up, which takes quite a while. It's an intriguing process. Surprisingly, as excited as I am, I am calm. The moment of my trip, which I was so excited about, was finally going to lift off. There are about seventeen people in the basket with the pilot, Ollie, in the center with the propane tanks. I have a spot overlooking the basket. We have a lift-off after a few housekeeping rules of safety. The rope is released, and slowly, with the wind, we rise. I have realized my fear of heights has gone out of the basket. Ollie slowly brings us up to different heights, not to freak anybody out, but at this point, the only place you have to go is sitting on the floor of the basket cause the alternative is worse, you would think. The view of the mountains, valleys, and Florence in the distance is spectacular. The valleys have fog patches that make a photographer dream. The air is not cold, and the winds are light. Everyone enjoyed the hour-long ride. We landed safely with only one bump, ten feet from the start of lines of grape vines. We have a celebratory breakfast of prosecco, juice, and croissants. We had an awesome time the three of us, and glad we fought our fears.Baca selengkapnya

San Gimignano

Nicole, Bernie, Ron, and I did an uneventful trip to San Gimignano this morning. Another medieval town is known for its many towers. We found parking fairly easily. Walking up to the town center, the roads are steep and full of shopping stores for tourists. We had coffee and a light breakfast of croissants. We watched while people lined up down half the center for the world-champion gelato from so many years ago, thinking they still were. We decided to go to the world's best ice cream store, which had a shorter line and did not disappoint. OMG, it was so good and creamy. We paid to go into the town museum. It has renesaunts artwork from the year 1200-1400. We did climb the tallest tower, the one with 168 stairs. The stairs are the ones that give me knock-knock-knees. See-through, which made me look forward and hold the side of the walls as if they would save me. All I could think of was what if an earthquake hit right now, where would I go? The view again is rewarding on top of the bell tower. We arrived home hungry and thirsty only to find Miriam, Linda, and Jane in the throws of afternoon drinking and pool time. It did not take long to get caught up. The best part was that Jane was finally relaxed and showed her hilarious " feeling good" side. She insisted that today was truth day and boy was I told! Linda told me that Miriam was more compassionate than I was. Imagine that! I did not take it personally because I knew my sista had a compassionate side. We cleaned up and went for dinner at a place not too far from the house. The place was gorgeous and the night was perfect for an outdoor dinner. Again, beef Florentine was on the menu, and we all pigged out on the delicious food. Jane continued to be in rare form for our enjoyment asking if her dessert was a " normal size" (another one of Jane saying, like what's normal size) causing Nicole to laugh, going to the brink of peeing her pants. Then she broke her wine glass with me offering her the glue to fix it, in which she struggled. She did go to apologize and did not have to do this evening's dishes. We, girls, tied one on today and had the best laughs ever, leaving a row of wine bottles in our path. Goodnight everyone!!Baca selengkapnya

Nippazzano Winery

Today, we left our wonderful villa in Tuscany. We had a great, final day yesterday and will miss our lovely view more than we know. The only thing I won't miss is the bug bites that I was the only one to receive or the buzzing in my ear in the dark. We took the winding back roads of Chianti to go to Greeves, then to Nippazzano. Up and down, sharp turns, making me feel like I never wanted this wonderland ride again. That nauseous feeling did not sit well. We arrived at Nippazzano by 1:30 p.m. but couldn't check in till 3. Off we all went in search of food. To be honest, I am not feeling hungry, but we don't know when we will receive our next meal. We stopped at il Quartino, a burger gourmet. Lunch was only good because we hadn't had a burger or fries in a month. Bernie had ribs that just didn't have flavor, but they were meaty. The white wine we had was refreshing, only because it was cold. We are currently waiting for our tour of Nippazzano Winery. We started our tour, and Ron was like a kid in a candy store. He was at his favorite everyday wine, winery. The tour was the same as the others, but this time, we saw them harvesting and starting the process. The tasting was on a whole other level, and remember how we didn't know when our next meal was coming. It has come too soon. We had three different wines, two reds and a white to taste from their different wineries. The snack plate was a mixture of meat and cheeses, petite canapés, bread, and olive oils. Our accommodations are a renovated olive oil mill. Rustic yet having modern touches. I have my own room with a canopy bed,my own bathroom, a view for miles, and the little touches that my life can't afford. I am soaking these moments in and lavishing them as long as I can. The evening was spent soaking in the pool, drinking Nippazzano wine, lemoncello spritzs, and capturing our last Tuscan sunset over the mountain terrain. It was on fire, unlike us. Sleep was awesome and deep. I awoke from the knock at the door before the alarm. Have to admit I want to stay in bed. After getting dressed, I walked into the main living area to two women, cooking us breakfast. I take it in as this is my normal, what was promised to me so many times. Instead, I earned this as part of my hard work to travel here. I really don't want this to end. We all enjoyed our breakfast to its fullest. I say Nippazzano winery has spoiled us and treated us like kings and queens, money well spent. Now we have an adventure to get to Sorrento.Baca selengkapnya

Pompeii

We had a short visit to Sorrento and we all wished we had one more night to look around but that was not possible. Today we took the so-called express train to Pompeii and got royally ripped off on the tickets. The price was 105 euros and the return was less than 20 euros on a slow train. We did a bit of walking today. We had a quick lunch not far from the ruins. Our tour of Pompeii was excellent. Our tour guide Italo was hilarious and just added that as part of the tour. He gave some very interesting information about the ruins and its excavation. I only wished we could stay longer. I missed seeing the people they found in their death form but I would probably get more out of a documentary. It is funny how I stood by a church and overlooked Pompeii's ruins. You're looking at a big city that is below that level and also how far the sea has retreated from its port. A good 15-minute walk away. The area and land formation have changed in so many ways. I guess too that I will never complain about a hard bed again considering the people slept on rocks, and bricks, and had stone pillows. This was seen throughout the bordellos of the times. They also had fresco paintings on the walls to communicate sexual activities and who you wanted to have sex with, male, female, or young boy. Penis phallic symbols are all over the place. Pompeii is just a very interesting place. It was considerably hot today but thank god for a nice breeze every once in a while. Once the tour ended we proceeded to our next adventure, getting to the island of Capri and Anacapri. We picked up our bags at the storage locker and walked to the port. We caught the ferry for 1630 or so and it was not filled with many people going over. We arrived at Capri which was a hustle and bustle of tourists.Baca selengkapnya

Sorrento

We are not going to see as much of Sorrento as we hoped. Today has been a long travel day of car, shuttle, tram, train, legs, and back on a train. The guys were so happy to dump the cars in Florence, especially Bernie, with a standard. Hills and roundabouts are a pain, and turns are a challenge. We had gelato at the train station before leaving Florence. The ride to Naples was smooth and comfortable, affording me the time to catch up on blogging our trip. It is a mountainous terrain, and the towns look all the same. The train traveled at speeds of 299km/ hr, and we had numerous tunnels along the way. Our first impression of Naples by the train station is dirty with litter, homelessness, and impatient drivers. We dropped bags off at a storage facility until we get back to Naples in four days. We are on our final leg of transportation to Sorrento, and the Campania Express is packed and noisy, needing an oil job. Reminds me of nails on a chalkboard, sending shivers through my body, and hurting my ears. The great thing about it is that it is air condition. We finally arrived around 6:45 p.m. A cab got us to our Airbnb, which our lady was waiting at the gates. Orientation was given, and we departed to look for food. Sorrento has a calypso feel, what I imagine Miami would be like. Its plaster buildings lit up in pastel colors surrounded by flourishing plants and palm trees. The streets are bustling with people out for dinner or shopping. We could not get into the restaurant that was recommended, but one was just down the street. It was expensive but we expect that in this area. The food I had was good, fish ravioli with seafood, and I loved the grilled vegetables of zucchini and eggplant. Who knew eggplant would become a favorite. An after dinner stroll was needed. The alleys have little shops of the three Ls- leather, linen, and lemons. It is muggy tonight, and on return, we enjoyed a glass of wine on the Terrace before bed. We did have a little bit of a scare when we noticed a glow on top of the mountain. We thought Vesuvius was glowing, but it wasn't even Vesuvius. Another mountain range had an orange glow coming from its peak, only to be made aware that it was the moon. Beautiful, just beautiful! Good night, Sorrento!Baca selengkapnya

Capri

All I can say is our accommodations are great in Anacapri but getting to it is an OMG I am going to die situation. After arriving by ferry you have two choices to make it to Anacapri. One is to walk it or you can take a bus. We chose the latter because we had no idea how long it would take. The bus is just a little bigger than a pickup van. We are so jammed-packed in the bus that it is no wonder why people die in bus accidents or tip them over and crush people. It's all about the money, no care about safety. We proceed up the hill in a winding fashion holding on for our dear life. With every twist and turn or the slam of the breaks I wack Jane with my stiff knapsack, pissing her off as she is already under stress from the ride. Nicole can only look one way and that is the water below the edge of the cliff. We stop for another bus to pass through with motorbikes sneaking in first. The bus scrapes by nicking the review mirror on our bus. We are a bunch of wack jobs getting off. Our accommodations are fabulous and give a tropical feel to our vacation. We go to a restaurant recommended by our host, she states they have very good lemon risotto. Of course, that is what I ordered, and was disappointed. It had very little shrimp in it and I did not taste lemon, but more like Kraft Dinner. We settled fairly early as everyone was tired. The next day was beautiful. Breakfast was self-serve and a big spread. After we headed to the chair lift not far from our place. That was the best 14 euros spent. It was a smooth ride up and the views were okay but coming down was spectacular. We spent about an hour and a half up at the top of the island. We were above the clouds, clouds moved in making the view not clear. Boats were specks in the water. The lift down was a total view of Anacapri and Capri. After Miriam and I walked and shopped. We walked around with Aperol spritz passing the police with no issues at all. I found a vending machine that sold many items including a vibrator. They sell everything here! We stopped for lunch with a bottle of wine and had a flirtatious waiter with a great sense of humor. The two of us stumbled back with me almost peeing my pants at the gate over something so trivial. The rest of the gang went and toured Capri meeting us back at the room for some afternoon wine that was locked in one of the bedrooms. Jane arranged dinner reservations at a swanky hotel. She was stressed about the cost but we have been well below our eating expenses. Drinks at sunset on the terrace and a wonderful gourmet meal with great bread, fish, and petitè for desserts. Our waiter again, was awesome and helpful and funny with some arrogants. We walked back through some dark walkway back to our space. Me I tooted back, trying to be quiet but failing miserably. It was like 25 days of buildup helping me along. Of course, I laughed, and Miriam too. We ended the evening with red wine and 60% chocolate. Yummy!!_Baca selengkapnya

Napoli

Today, we leave beautiful Anacapri/Capri island for Naples. I enjoyed the accommodations that we had. They provided us with some luxuries in our room, a comfy bed, and a wonderful breakfast on both days. They are also very helpful with direction. The taxi ride down the mountain was less stressful than the ride up. We still come in close contact with vehicles and the idiots that walk or run down the same side as the vehicles coming down, not knowing what would hit them. We are going back via a hydrofoil boat across the steel blue sea. The sea is calm for a ride, and it's open for a cool wind on a hot day. We arrive at Port and need to find a taxi to our accommodations. The driver narrates the drive with interesting facts about the area and drops us off two blocks from our accommodations. He proceeds to rip us off requesting 10 euros each for a two-mile, five-minute drive. The streets are busy with people all over, mixed with vehicles. We finally find our place in a shady area but the apartment is ok. Out we ventured for a drink and we had our first margarita pizza. We just stumbled on the underground city of Leonardo Maggioria and toured it on our own. It is a major attraction in Naples. We walk a short distance for gelato and the servers are rude. We all walk in search of something to do and we all have an uncomfortable feeling about Naples. We all just can't wait to get out of town. Finding wine is like finding a needle in a haystack. We find one bottle of DOCG Chianti for 11 euros and decide we will get one but beer is going to be the drink of the night. We received a recommendation from our waiter last evening, who is from here, for the best pizza in town. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele was the place, but on arrival, they were at number 29 and we were at 90. We went across the street and had a great pizza. The pizza is the size of a medium at home but the crust is thin with puffy edges and the toppings are simple and light. Since the walk to the pizzeria was like a scene out of The Italian Job, I wanted to videotape to show the kids how wild it was and how close they came to collecting an insurance claim. In my first scene, I forgot to push the record button. It's crazy. The kids ride their motorbikes back and forth down the street. It is so dangerous. We all agree Naples is not a tourist place where we are staying. I do feel at times not safe, it's dirty with litter and graffiti and we can't wait to get out of dodge cause this place is bat shit crazy!Baca selengkapnya

Roman Holiday- 1

We left our accommodations before 0730 a.m. this morning. The scene was different from last night, but the litter was worse. No pride was seen in this city, but they do have passion for their hometowns. We left Napoli train station at 1050 a.m. I am dying today with fatigue and thirst. I could barely stay awake, and I am afraid I am coming down with something. The day is beautiful and hot. Apparently, at home, the weather is cold and rainy. We arrived at our accommodations by metro, which is just around the corner from the Spanish Steps. The first stop beside our door was gelato. Refreshing on a warm day. We settle in our rooms, and I nap for a solid hour and a half. Dead I was. I showered, which made me feel somewhat better. We had dinner from across the street. Spaghetti with marinara sauce take-out for 4.50 euros. We also had tiramisui from Pompeii. The best in Rome. I am not big on it, but it was good and not soggy. Tonight, we ventured out on a golf cart tour. Our guide was, from Sweden, and not bad to look at. He took us to places that are not popular tourist attractions, like the little version of the Colosseum, Maximus Circus. Driving can still be wild but more respectful than in Naples. We ended the night with a walk to the Spanish Steps for exercise. I am waiting to call the kids as soon as they get to Andrea's as it is Thanksgiving at home. We had a great day to start.Baca selengkapnya
