  • Day 6: Scavenger Hunt

    30 Haziran 2016, İtalya ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

It was tougher than we expected. More asking strangers for information and help than figuring out puzzles. Oh joy. Not just talking to strangers but also asking them for help. Two of my favorite things. But we did get to wander around exploring a very picturesque spot.

Next it is on to glass blowing and mosaics!

  • Day 6: Art on Murano

    30 Haziran 2016, İtalya ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

We then went to a glass factory on the famous island of Murano where we first had to make a glass mosaic. We were just reproducing a child's mosaic with glass bits glued on wood, but it was fun and we got to cut glass rods into little bits.

Next we went into the room with the glass forge and had to try to blow as large (in diameter) oblong of glass as we could without popping it like a bubble. Here is a video of Russell's effort:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsphcGggD6g&amp…

Finally, we had to try shaping molten glass into something (anything we wanted). It's really hard to shape the glass before it cooled. I ended up with something that might have been a flower (if you squint a lot) and R did just about as well on his interpretation of a hand.

  • Laundry in Venice

    30 Haziran 2016, İtalya ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

After we got back from the art challenge we went off to do laundry and then had a very nice dinner with some teams we hadn't spent much time with. We managed to polish off 4 bottles of wine amongst 6 people, one of whom was a total lightweight (well she is only 16 years old!).

So we were feeling no pain when we headed back for an early night, for once. We did forego our chance for a romantic gondola ride, because sleep was more appealing.

  • Exploring Bologna

    1 Temmuz 2016, İtalya ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

We got up early to take the 10:25 train to Bologna. Venice is lovely but why not eat lunch in the food capital of Italy?

When we arrived in Bologna, there was a collection of Mickey Mouse statues waiting to greet us.

Since our challenge didn't start until evening, we found a great place to rent bikes and got a chance to explore the town a bit. We climbed to the top of this 400 ft medieval tower with great views of the town.

Since it was Canada Day, we all sang the Canadian National Anthem. Well, the Canadians in our group sang, the rest of us just hummed along. There are now videos of this performance winging around the world due to all the other tourists who recorded us!

  • Day 8: Gelato making

    2 Temmuz 2016, İtalya ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

This was a challenge everyone enjoyed. After a very late night (it was after midnight before we all made it back after the cooking challenge) we had an early morning departure, but our destination made it worth it: The Gelato University- a whole facility devoted to teaching people how to make gelato.

First we learned about some of the science behind making gelato and then, working as teams, we had to try our hand at making two flavors. Ours turned out very well, and it was a lot of fun tasting everyone else's efforts as well.

  • More Exploring Bologna

    2 Temmuz 2016, İtalya ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

After gelato, we headed back to Bologna for a little more wandering around and lunch.

Bologna used to be threaded with canals. Most of them have been covered over, but there are still a few you can find. One view is only possible through a window that is inserted in a wall. When you are on the street, you have no idea there is a canal under it, but look through the window and you have an enchanting view of the water coming your way.

You can even find a spot with a view of that window from the other side.

We had just enough time for one last Bologna lunch.

  • Driving into Austria

    2 Temmuz 2016, İtalya ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

Then it was time to board a bus for a 5 hour ride into the Austrian alps. We got there really late and once again I was too tired to eat dinner. Fortunately our hotel was right at the location of the Alpine luge coaster so no need to worry about holding others up if we were a bit late in the morning.

The hotel was a really quaint traditional Alpine lodge.

  • Day 9: Alpine luge roller coaster

    3 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

It was an exciting and action packed day. The luge coaster is a track where you can ride a little luge sled down this mountain through some sharp curves and steep drops. You have a brake, so you can control your rate of descent, but you can work up some pretty good speed if you want or you can go really slowly, if you are nervous. Unfortunately slow people can cause a bit of a traffic jam on the track.

We had a few mini disasters this day. The drivers were supposed to keep 25 meters separation, but most people ignored that, which led to a few relatively minor collisions. Then one of our group lost his wallet when going down one time. Despite several people looking for it on their slow runs, he didn't recover it. Then there was a major collision that sent two of our people to the hospital to be checked out.

While the injured were being attended, R and I had to head back up the mountain on the ski lift to retrieve our backpacks that we had stored up there while doing the luge. And also retrieve the backpack of one of the injured.

We decided to keep a keen eye out for the wallet, but had little expectation of success. Amazingly, I spotted it when were not too far from the top of the course and it was in a spot that was actually kind of accessible. So once we landed, Russell hiked down to retrieve it while I sent the backpacks down by themselves on the ski lift, and we both got one last luge run in and we were heroes!

  • Innsbruck

    3 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

While our injured companions were being checked out at the hospital, the rest of us took a bus to Innsbruck and checked into the hotel and then went for a late lunch.

When we returned to the hotel, our walking wounded pals were there and ready to go get their pain prescriptions filled. I took a photo of them at the 24 hr pharmacy.Okumaya devam et

  • Day 9: Tirolean music and dance

    3 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

For our next challenge we went to a place that puts on a Tirolean (or Tyrolean) music and dance show for bus loads of foreign tourists each night. But we showed up hours before the show and had to try playing Tirolean musical instruments (singing saw, Tirolean horn - the really long one, and cow bells) and we also had to try yodeling and learn a "simple" foot slapping dance.

After we tried all the instruments and the yodeling and performed our dance for the judges, we got to eat a traditional dinner of weiner schnitzel and watch how good a job the professionals could do.

Here is the video of our dance performance. Despite what it looks like, I was NOT having a mini-stroke at the finale!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c7QxtmXXJ4&amp…

The dancing reminded me a lot of the Morris dancers we saw in England: kind of silly looking to the untrained eye, even though it takes a huge amount of skill and coordination. One of my favorite dances they did was the millers dance, which was a couples dance where the men and women formed interlocking spinning circles that were reminiscent of milling wheels.

The audience consisted of us (the only ones actually eating dinner) and hundreds of tourists, from all over the world, who had been transported to Innsbruck and then disgorged from buses.

  • Day: 10: Via Ferrata

    4 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

After a train ride to Salzburg, we boarded a bus to take us to lake Gosau, where we were to climb a via ferrarta which is a cable and other helpful climbing points that have been attached to the side of a mountain. You clip yourself on to cable and work your way along. You can't fall and die, but you can get yourself into some difficult (and painful) situations.

The via ferrarta we were climbing was relatively new, installed about 20 years ago purely for recreation, but this method has been used for over a century to move supplies and troops (especially in wartime) through the alps.

As you can see in the photo we took from the lake, there were two parts to the run. You first did the lower portion from left to right and then went up the ladder on the right to do the upper part. It was possible to call it quits after the initial (shorter) section, but once you clipped into the longer, higher section you had to continue to the end. I quit after the first part, because I wasn't having fun and it was pretty hard for me.

    Russell did the whole thing!

  • Boating on Lake Gosau

    4 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

After everyone finished the climb, and had a refreshing beverage, we joined another team in taking a boat out on the lake. The boat looked like something out of the thirties. We felt like movie stars.

While we were on the lake, we recorded our two marketing videos for the Via Ferrata. Mine was supposed to be encouraging people to go on it while Russell's was discouraging:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4fJWGf9CPU&amp…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsbQcfBpmos&amp…

Then it was time to board a taxi van and head off to our hotel for the night in the quaint village of Hallstatt.

For once we had a very early night and got a full night's sleep. Although I did discover that using my arm looped around the cable on the via ferrarta as a method of resting may have not been that smart. I ended up with a lovely bruise that was only going to get worse.

  • Day 11: Austrian Ice Caves

    5 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Our first challenge today was to go through these caves in Austria with amazing ice formations. Once inside the caves, there were about 700 steps (up and then 700 down) and about a mile and half of walking to do the tour. However, getting to the caves themselves was an even more strenuous walk (and a short, but steep, cable car ride), but the views into the valley below were absolutely gorgeous.

The ice formations themselves were quite impressive and the tour had a really funky vibe. They handed out these carbide lanterns with an open flame that looked like they were from a hundred years ago and when the guide wanted to illuminate something even more, he would light a piece of phosphorous. Very old school and gave you a bit of an understanding of what the original explorers saw when they entered the caves back around 1910.

  • Eidelweiss tour

    5 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

To get us from the ice caves to the next challenge, Steve arranged for a local tour guide group to provide us some transport in their vans. This organization evidently specializes in taking people on Sound of Music tours, since it was filmed in this region. Which meant the driver was constitutionally incapable of NOT telling us each and every bit of trivia about the filming of the movie as we passed every spot that had been used, or referenced, or appeared in the background, etc. It was kind of amusing actually.

The other funny thing, is he points out this castle that was used in filming Where Eagles Dare, which is one of my favorite WWII movies (see it if you get the chance) and so I started asking him all about that and what parts of the castle were used for filming and he quickly responded, "I've never actually seen the movie. I have no real idea." Well, at least he was honest about it!

  • Day 11: Trick water fountains

    5 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Our final challenge was to go on a tour on the gardens of Schloss Hellbrunn and count all the water jets we could find. The guy who built this castle had a twisted sense of humor and he installed all these hidden fountains that he could trigger and surprisingly wet his guests. Now the guides take the tourists through in groups and do the same.

Unfortunately, R and I just missed a few large fountains so our final count was way off. Oh well, that means we are out of the running for first place.

  • Goodbye dinner (and surprise shower)

    5 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

We all (well, except for the 4 people who had already left) ended up gathering in the hotel restaurant and sitting outside to enjoy one last meal together. Suddenly it started raining. We were all content to wait it out, thinking it was just a cloudburst, and we were under the shelter of trees, but the waiters, who know the local weather patterns, practically threw us out of our seats and ushered us inside, just as the entire heavens opened up. It was quite the deluge.

Just before dinner, we recorded our last Competitours video that explained what we thought one of the ice formations we saw in the cave really looked like (as opposed to what the guide told us it was named). Here is our last video effort:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1j5kspDgN0&amp…

After dinner, we gathered in the lobby to watch a video one of the group had cut together from all the photos and video she had taken on the trip. It was fricking amazing and I still don't understand how she could do it all so quickly, even though she pulled an all-nighter the night before:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCq7WNe1OyM

Then Steve announced the winners and we were shocked to discover we ended up in third place. Cash prize, woohoo!

  • Leaving Salzburg

    6 Temmuz 2016, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We were on our way to the Salzburg airport when we discovered that our departure time had been moved up an hour. Fortunately the flight was then late and the airport was easy. Forty minutes from hotel to gate, so we made it in plenty of time.

This is the first airport where my wrist set off the metal detectors and then they proceeded to do a *very* thorough (but quick) check of my person.

  • One last day in Zurich

    7 Temmuz 2016, İsviçre ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We returned to Zurich for one day because this is our departure city. We checked into the same hotel, got the same room, and went to eat in the place we had eaten twice before.

We kind of feel like we know this town now, even though we have sampled just a very small part of it.

Russell went into work, while I putzed around and packed up.

At one point I decided to wander around and take photos of where we found my purse that first night, starting with the trash can that was close to the location that both Russell and I decided to rummage around in the dark to see if it had been thrown there. I even reenacted where I eventually found it.
