    Cowra

    6–7 sep. 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Quick stopover in Cowra. A few drinks at the Cowra Serviced club a dinner at masala Library by Sid (Indian), great feed. Back to the van park, there must be a historic vehicle gathering as there are a plethora of old fords here. The photo is of a Ford Fairlane 500.Läs mer

  • Camp Blackman Day 2

    8 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Started the day with breakfast alongside some curious kangaroos near the van. Took a walk on one of the local trails—lots of hills, and my legs are sure to feel it tomorrow. The rest of the day was spent relaxing at the campsite, unwinding. Wrapped up the evening with a few beers around the campfire. Tomorrow, it’s off to Lightning Ridge.Läs mer

  • Lightning Ridge

    9–12 sep. 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

As usual, we used Waze for navigation around town and on the highways to Sydney, but it doesn’t handle backroads or dirt roads well. Leaving Camp Blackman, Waze suggested a 409 km route to Lightning Ridge, while Google Maps offered a 269 km option. We chose the shorter one, though it included about 30km of dirt road. It wasn’t bad, but recent rain had left two deep ruts, likely from a truck.

We decided to fly the drone and try the “follow me” feature. That’s when things went wrong. I hadn’t checked the default distance settings, and while Karen drove, I got distracted. When I looked back, the drone was hovering 400 meters behind us, out of range, with the controller warning that it had reached its max distance (1500m). To make matters worse, the battery was nearly dead. I couldn’t remember how to adjust the settings, and I didn’t want the drone either flying too far back or crashing. So, I jogged down the road, managed to land it with just 4% battery left. Lesson learned. Offending footage on youtube link below

Out here, the paddocks are massive, and the machinery matches. We passed an 8-wheel tractor and later a herd of cows being looked after by a modern-day Jackaroo—cowboy hat on, phone in hand, sitting on his horse.

I expected Lightning Ridge to be similar to Coober Pedy, but so far, it’s much nicer. We had dinner at the Bowls Club and are looking forward to exploring more tomorrow.

  • Glengarry Hilton Hotel

    10 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I’ve had to split today’s blogs since FindPenguins limits each diary entry to 20 photos.

Lightning Ridge has an interesting way of guiding tourists – the “Car Door Explorer Tours.” Each tour is marked by a different colored car door at key locations. Today, we did the orange tour, which took us through Grawin and Glengarry, the original opal fields of the area. It was exactly what I imagined Lightning Ridge would be like: shanty towns, ramshackle huts, and cars driving around with no registration or windows. It was a real eye-opener.

  • Around Lightning Ridge

    11 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We continued the Coloured Car Door Tours with the Blue Car Door route, which led us to the Opal Mine Adventure Walk. It was interesting to see how the mining process works. Most of the other stops on the tour were just okay—a bottle house, Amigo’s Castle, and a few other spots. Looked like we were going to get hit by a storm, with the skies turning pitch black, but it passed around us. Tomorrow, we’re heading to a farm stay just north of Dubbo.Läs mer

  • Hows the Serenity Farm Campsite

    12 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Heading South-East: Slow Trekking Back Home

On our way back, we found a farm campground called How’s the Serenity, just 20 minutes out of Dubbo. It’s a fantastic spot for a night’s rest. Not much to do except sit back and relax, which is exactly what we needed.
Note the rustic dunnies with frytol tins

We had a bit of a scare on the road—almost hit a kangaroo that jumped in front of us (check out the video). You hear about it happening, but it still catches you off guard, especially in the middle of the day. Karen’s comment summed it up well.

The weather was rough when we got here—strong winds and some rain. It’s calmed down now, but it’s pretty cold. We’ve got a fire going, though, so everything’s good.
