    Shrewsbury prison

    July 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

On our way to Snowdonia we stopped in Shrewsbury and decided to visit the prison. As well as seeing Sean Bean's cell from Time we did an escape room where we were handcuffed and hooded in a room without any light!Read more

  • Snowdon

    July 26, 2022 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Well, yesterday was the first day of my 6 week sabbatical and today the girls and I climbed Snowdon! We didn't intend to go to the summit when we set out (we thought we would go part way up for some lunch) but Caitlin's determination got us all there!
As she pointed out, it doesn't quite sound the same to say you've climbed halfway up Snowdon.
Some absolutely breathtaking scenery and some fun scrambling on Pyg Track.
As we got nearer the top we were told on a number of occasions (each about 20 minutes apart!) "just 30 minutes to go". But that helped spur us on and in the end the summit came sooner than expected.
A couple of hairy moments coming down - we had all run out of energy (and biscuits) (and slightly low on water, eek) and weren't sure how we were going to make it down. Perhaps Bethan's realism (taking into account the downward journey too in what she thought could be acheived) should have tempered Caitlin's enthusiasm which completely died down once the thrill of reaching the top subsided! And then I took a tumble grazing my knee and hands. But fortunately there was space on the train down from Clogwyn (3/4 of the way up) - hurrah!
Particular praise to Bethan who did this after having just got back from a weekend expedition involving 9 hours of walking.
Some great memories and an overwhlming sense of acheivement. We will all sleep very well tonight.

  • World's fastest zipline!

    July 27, 2022 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today the girls and I braved the world's fastest and Europe's longest zipline! Strapped horizontally into a harness, speeding headfirst over a cobalt blue lake, it was the closest I have come to proper 'flying'. Of course, being the world's fastest zipline also meant it was over extremely quickly! Fortunately we have some (unflattering) video evidence!Read more

  • Llanfairpwllgwyngyll...

    July 28, 2022 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Not much to say about this place except we called in on the way past and can now say we have been here! There is a car park and these signs to take photos of!

  • Waiting for the flight

    August 3, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

At Heathrow - through check in and security with three hours to spare (and before David got home from dropping me off)! Must be the Jamieson influence on me fighting my natural inclination to maximise time in bed and make it with minutes to spare... how long will this last I wonder?! For now, time to linger over a large cooked breakfast 🍳🥓🥞🍞🫖 and ponder whether I remembered to pack everything!Read more

  • Perfectionists' Cafe?

    August 3, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I found it amusing that somewhere calling itself The Perfectionists's Cafe had an apostrophe error in its menu! It reminded me of my fantastic birthday card from Antonia Gawn 😀

  • Arrived in Lima!

    August 3, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Well, 6300 miles later and 24 hours since I arrived at Heathrow, I'm here safely! Trip went well - was glad to meet a girl (Arbi?) who was also travelling to Peru who helped out when we both realised we were about to go through security for our second flight with water bottles still full from the first!
Here is a photo of the lights of Lima as we landed and my very comfy (compact) hotel room. It seems to be located on top of an extremely loud nightclub, but I have ear plugs and am very tired. Also, it's 1.15 in the morning - how much longer can it go on?! They've just started playing Sledgehammer which seems to be a crowd pleaser! UPDATE: The ear plugs did their work and I slept a very peaceful 7.5 hours 🙂 Maybe I'll join in for a bit tonight! But not too late as I have an early start tomorrow.

  • Circuito Mágico del Agua

    August 4, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

I took a trip to the 'Magic Water Circuit' with Bethany, a friend I made on the walking tour. Some beautiful lit fountains including a Disneyland-esque show projected onto the mist of the fountains.
The two of us together gave the courage to take the bus there at night - we're in a very safe district but mastering Peruvian public transport seemed easier with two!

  • More ziplining!

    August 5, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today I left Lima and started the travels on the coach, heading to Paracas. On the way we stopped for breakfast at a fairly random place, saw a horse dancing and played some 'guinea pig tombola' (see the video). I won a round and as a 'reward' was given a go on their rusty zipline! I wish I could say it was similar to my zipline experience last week!Read more

  • Lovely little Peruvian restaurant

    August 5, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Whilst I was in Paracas I headed out for an evening meal to a place recommended on Tripadvisor. Most of the restaurants were on the touristy seafront; this one was a few blocks back. As I started walking there the streetlights disappeared, the roads became uneven and there were people and dogs sitting outside their houses. But everyone seemed very friendly.

As I arrived at the place indicated by Google Maps I wasn't even sure it was a restaurant. There was a chap there painting and as I arrived he ushered me in, put down his paints and put on a chef's hat. He was the most friendly guy, spoke Spanish, English, French and Italian, and the food was amazing!

  • Paracas boat tour

    August 6, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Paracas is known as the 'Poor Man's Galapagos'. On our (pretty chilly!) boat tour we saw penguins, pelicans, dolphins and even a sea lion 🦭. I am using the royal 'we' however, as I managed to miss the penguins. In my defence, Vicky and Rob had binoculars and a powerful camera and seemed to be the only ones who saw them!Read more

  • Sandboarding and dancing in Huacachina

    August 6, 2022 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

One of my best days so far! We stayed in Huacachina, an oasis in the desert. A swim in the pool, followed by riding insane buggies over the sand dunes (vaguely petrifying but so much fun!). Then, to continue the petrifying theme, sand boarding headfirst down huge sand dunes - fantastic! Then we sat and watched the sun go down over the dunes, before dancing the night away 💃Read more
