    Was it real or was it an ILUUUUSIONNN!

    So these are the take always my children have from seeing the world famous changing of the guard at the Presidential Palace and the science and engineering rich museum of real world magic… 🙄🤣

    We have left the patient for a few hours to fend for herself (food and water were provided in easy to reach positions) and headed back out into Athens to catch a few things we missed the first time around.

    Time to head home though and make sure Kylz is ok…hang in there wifey, we’ll be home soon ❤️

    Broken leg diaries

    Mum hadn’t left the apartment in 4 days. She’d been sitting on the lounge watching Greek Chaser, Wheel of fortune (“Give me an alpha please Larry”) and occasionally made it out to the balcony for cheese and olives and a game of backgammon.

    The night before we were due to leave for Egypt we decided to have a practice run at walking with crutches to the restaurant literally below our apartment. It didn’t bode well. There were tears, wobbles.

    The next day we warily travelled to the airport at Athens. A super friendly airport staff member put mum in a wheelchair and we got VIP treatment through the airport and customs. (With stops to drop off the drone and get US Dollars and Egyptian pounds because Egypt has two currencies). Mum got put in a lift truck up to the plane to avoid all the stairs and India was pretty chuffed to go along for the ride as the designated assistant. We got extra seats on the plane (sorted by Dale). We got a slightly dodgier lift down from the plane on Cairo and zipped through all the many security checks by our Egyptian airport helper.     Cairo is crazy. The city is dirty with half built infrastructure everywhere. As we were driving to our hotel we saw many many buildings that looked half demolished. The guide told us that these apartment blocks were half ripped down by the government to make room for bigger highways and bridges. There were literally bathroom and bedroom walls complete with tile and paintwork on the outside of these buildings. The lucky residents who didn’t get their apartments ripped off were still living in the buildings!

    We passed over the Nile and saw glimpses of the pyramids right next to the heart of Cairo as we traveled to our hotel.

    At the hotel we met the group that we would be spending next 9 days with.

    Hobbling like an Egyptian

    The kids were unimpressed about a 5.45 am wake up but we were so glad we did it and beat the other tour buses and heat to the pyramids.

    It was awe-inspiring to see the great pyramids of Giza. They were the tallest structures in the world for 3000 years and the stones were formed to fit together precisely. The theory is the were built by building a road to each level all the way from the river Nile. The foundations of the pyramid are hard rock. The centre is a box made of hard granite. Millions of blocks for the outside were floated down the Nile with the tides on individual rafts. The pyramid was then covered in fine limestone

    Team Curran managed to push mum in a wheelchair chair over the Sahara Desert sand, help her jump over fences, stones and crevices; and held her phone and crutches to touch a pyramid!

    We saw three pyramids at Giza, the sphinx, the original step pyramid at Sakkara and some amazing carvings and paintings at the tomb of Teti (pronounced titty - got some giggles).

    That evening we jumped on another plane to the city of Aswan and stayed in a hotel overlooking the Sahara desert.    Read more

    Cyprus, Aphrodite’s Rock

    We’ve arrived in Cyprus, picked up our Motorhome from our new mate Nikos and have started our road trip around this island. It’s crazy that island in the Mediterranean is closer to Turkey, Syria and Egypt than Wollongong is from Sydney.

    We stayed a couple of nights at Rikko’s beach car park in Paphos to get sorted with some life admin- laundry, groceries school work, road trip itinerary etc.

    While in Paphos we visited the birthplace of Kylie’s favourite goddess Aphrodite. Legend has it that the Greek God Kronos cut off the nuts of his nasty Dad Ouranous and threw them into the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Cyprus and soon after Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam where Ouranous’ balls landed.

    Anyway the goddess of love is Kylie’s favourite after seeing the mesmerising Botticelli painting in the Uffici gallery in Florence last year and the perfectly imperfect Venus de Milo sculpture in the louvre.    Read more

    The tombs of the Kings

    We visited some of most impressive ancient ruins in Cyprus, the tombs of the Kings which were designed in Alexandrian and Doric style. Unfortunately, having just spent a week in Egypt, the Cyprus tombs were a bit lame. Sorry Cyprus.Read more

    Today we visited the last divided city in the world Nicosia (Lefkosia). A Venetian wall separates the Cypriot side of the city from the Turkish occupied side. We had to show our passports to leave the Cypriot side, walk around 20m in the UN no-man’s land and then use our passports to enter the Turkish side. The Turkish side was full of knock off Louis Vuitton and Prada. We had a quick look at some Turkish architecture but when in Turkey, the most important thing to do is try the Pide!!Read more

    In a small village, just near the border of Turkish- occupied Cyprus we came across a little piece of Wollongong, the WARRAWONG Cake shop. It is apparently the best wedding cake shop in Cyprus and is owned by Evy’s auntie. Now we know where Lee gets her baking skills. We had a delicious afternoon tea Dale’s particular favourite was the Kok. We were lucky enough to be gifted some Cypriot wedding bomboniere, Loukoumia. I’m sure we’ll have enough to bring home to Samuel close for Evy to try.Read more

    We arrived for our month in the Greek islands amidst a scramble for Tay Tay tickets. Only 1.7% of Australia gets a spot at a Tay Tay concert but 10 times that number wanted a ticket resulting in teenagers in tears across Australia and one teenager staying up all night in Greece and in tears by morning.

    Our first days on the island Paros have been finding spent at the poolside, reading books, and cocktails at our new local and eagerly awaiting our big kid on her 39 hour journey from Sydney.    Read more

    The band is back together

    After a 40 hour journey from Sydney, we were so excited to have Keyala back with our traveling fam. It wasn’t without a little heart attack when Dale was waiting at the port and watched the ferry she was supposed to be on, depart without her seeing his ‘Keyala Curran’ sign made by Ari and him collecting her for her transfers via AT.V Turns out they walked past each other. Keyala went to charge her phone at the port cafe while Dale got the ferry staff to make an. announcement for her on the boat. They eventually found each other while Kylie and the girls were stressing at the hotel.

    Anyway. She’s back. We’ve eaten, swam and laughed together. And the girls have written a song… set to back street boys….

    Exploring Paros on an ATV

    We’ve spent the last few days exploring across the island of Paros. We hired an ATV, initially to pick up Keyala when she arrived - what a surprise, and we’ve been using it to work our way around the beaches at the north of the island. Dale got lots of practice in doing multiple ferrying trips on the two person bike 🏍️
    Kylie reached the point with her ankle where she can progress to a single stick and then no crutches at all.    Read more

    Sunset cocktails

    After a slow day at the beach we ventured into the dressed up part of Naousa and had some cocktails at the Come Back bar. We did some people watching, watched a first date unfold between a rich Australian and a very keen American woman 🤑🤑 resulting in her losing her bra during a break in conversation.

    We moved to another bar around the corner and managed to bargain down the cocktails from €14 to €10! 💪

    Greek feasting with Angelique

    Kalimera. We only travel in style now so today we were picked up by a flash Mercedes van to go to Parikia for a Greek cooking class at the Onira hotel.

    We made our Greek feast in an outdoor kitchen at the hotel with the benefit of being able to jump in the pool when the kitchen got too hot. Keyala and Ariah made tomato fritters, India made spanakopita, Dale made pork Tigania and Kylie made her favourite Orange pie (portokalopita). Everything tasted better than the restaurants and we’re thinking a Greek themed Christmas is on the cards.

    Our chef teacher was Angelique, a Dutch lady who has lived between Holland and Paros since 1999.

    We feasted on our creations with Greek beer and wine for lunch and also had enough to stash in our Tupperware for dinner.    Read more

    Island days on Paros

    A relatively quite couple of days lately, but still packed full of fun.

    After the cooking on Friday we relaxed with a game night in the hotel and then spent most of the next day doing not a lot really. Poor ol’ KJ has been a bit sick so there was a couple of doctors trips chucked in but that’s about it.

    That was until we went out that night for dinner and decided to head over to the celebration for the local church’s naming day.
    The party was really cool - it looked like most of the local families had turned up ready to party - young and old - well onto the early hours of the next morning.
    We paid our €10 pp entry and enjoyed the ouzo shot, free tray of meze, and home made (all included!) wine as we watched the seemingly never ending whirl of people spinning around in an ever growing line to the traditional Greek band.
    One guy, who had to be in his 80’s at least, out danced everyone in the floor and I don’t think we saw him take a break the entire time!!
    We called it a night at about 12:30am but the locals were at it full swing with no signs of stopping (even the food was still being cooked).

    The next night we explored the port area of Naoussa a bit more as we hunted for sunset cocktails…still a favourite pastime of ours 🍸🍹🥃
    We got some beautiful views and pics in the old sea fort as the sun came down before heading off for another yummy dinner! Hopefully we’ll still remember how to cook when we get home 😝    Read more
