Packed and almost ready to go!

    December 10, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Packing for 5 nights in Tokyo this time is pretty easy:
    One large suitcase (70% full)
One carry on (with puffy jacket and space for shopping)
One duffel bag (empty for shopping)

It helps when you’re travelling with a friend with similar interests (shopping, eating and pampering)

We have a well thought out itinerary with plenty of time to shop, eat and be pampered. No kids or husbands to slow us down (though they will be greatly missed!) 😍 The fridge and pantry are properly stocked, with enough activities to keep the family occupied for the week ahead.

Time to wind down as I have an early 7am flight to Sydney tomorrow.

  • Canberra to Tokyo

    December 11, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

A super early start to the day with some lots of hugs and long goodbyes to the family. I made my way to Canberra airport for a 7am flight to Sydney, meet my travel and shopping buddy (Ange) for our direct flight to Tokyo with ANA. It was a smooth flight and didn’t feel like a really long one thanks to some good conversations, short naps and good plane food. We arrived safely at Haneda airport around 8pm.
Having already completed our immigration form online beforehand was handy since we could just show our QR code and use the self service machines to progress our way towards the exit. We had already arranged for a private transfer last month, and our driver was waiting for us soon after we stepped outside (handy since we definitely felt the chills).
We arrived at the Hilton Shinjuku about 45 minutes later and checked into our room; a relatively spacious premium twin with executive lounge access which we will make use of in the coming days.
    Good night!🌙

  • Shopping Day 1

    December 12, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We started the morning with buffet breakfast downstairs at Marble Lounge before making our way to the Hello Kitty exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum.
The weather was nice and pretty warm for Winter. It was nice to see the tail end of autumn leaves as we walk towards the museum.
The exhibition featured the largest showcase of HK merchandise, collaborative works with creative artists and other various sections to explore the uniqueness of HK since its debut 50 years ago. The visit brought back lots of childhood memories browsing through Sanrio stationery and stickers in Chinatown (Sydney). We finished our visit here with some shopping at the museum before lining up at the Sanrio bus outside for some morning tea. I got a kerokero kerropi crepe (matcha and red bean), while Ange got a matcha donut.
Next stop was Kappabashi Street; a shopping street between Ueno and Asakusa lined up with over 150 kitchenware shops. We only managed to visit a handful of stores, but invested in some special items made in Japan.
We randomly found a nice place for lunch; Asaksa Misojyu Soup and Rice. They do a simple Japanese meal that is healthy, tasty and reasonably priced.
We shopped at a Sanrio store before taking the train to Hiroo for our Japanese headspa. This was a first experience for both of us, and the 2 hour treatment did not disappoint (I dozed off). We received a scalp consultation, a 90min clean and massage, neck and shoulder massage and arm massage (this was an added extra). The salon is only small with two treatment rooms, so we had the whole place to ourselves.
We made our way back to Ginza afterwards and had time to browse Onitsuka Tiger before our 7.30pm dinner reservation. I had enough time to try on (and purchase) my first pair of shoes with this brand. Even better- they’re Nippon made, in my favourite colour and I received a good tourist discount 😍

We had a 15 omasake course dinner at Yakitori Hirano. The restaurant is quite small and intimate where we can all openly watch our meals being prepared and grilled. The dishes may appear small but we were so full by the 12th dish and could barely finish the rest. We did manage to find space for dessert though (egg pudding) 😋

We took the train back to Nishi Shinjuku and arrived back at the hotel around 10.30pm. It’s been a long but fun day with lots packed into 13 hours! I am so thankful Ange is great (& willing) to be the one looking at Google maps for directions and guiding me. I’m so used to Joel doing that, and am pretty hopeless with directions. I’m too busy taking photos and updating Find Penguins 😆

  • Shopping Day 2

    December 13, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

We shopped til we dropped today- well at least I did, Ange is a few years younger than me and clearly has the energy to push on longer than me 😅
We were up bright and early today, for our day of shopping at the outlets. To get here we had to line up for the dedicated bus which leaves from Shinjuku station. We took the free hotel shuttle and arrived at Shinjuku station nice and early as you can’t pre book tickets so it’s first in line (which we pretty much were). The trip took just under an hour and we arrived at Mitsui Shopping Park soon after 10am. We already had a plan in place, which included looking at all the high end stores towards the back of the outlet park, and worked our way to the front which is closer to the bus stop.
We did quite well here over the next 6 hours with some purchases for the family, and lunch at Hakodate Kantaro was a nice surprise.
We took the 4.20pm bus back to Shinjuku, but didn’t arrive back until just after 6.30pm due to bad traffic. Thankfully this still gave us enough time at the lounge for drinks and canapés (fried chicken, dumplings and salad pretty much became our dinner)
This gave us enough energy to head back out to Shinjuku and visit SHIRO at Lumine to look at some skincare products. Some purchases were made and we then wandered over to the tax refund counter to claim our tax back.
Last stop for shopping tonight was at Don Quijote in Shinjuku, where we spent almost an hour wandering through multiple floors of snack food and random skincare products, and waited for about 30min in line to pay/claim our tax back. It was 11pm by the time we walked back to the hotel - needless to say, we were exhausted after being out for so many hours. I was ready to drop into bed!

  • Shopping Day 3

    December 14, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

The shops here don’t open until 11am, so we took it nice and easy in the morning especially the craziness of Don Quijote last night!
After breakfast we took the free hotel shuttle to Shinjuku station for some planned shopping around Omotesando. We did make a quick stopover at Ange’s highly recommended French style bakery, Boul’Ange in Shinjuku Southern Terrace, a short walk Shinjuku station. Ange was desperate for one of their pastries she had last year, and I wasn’t going to get anything but… the croissant cornets looked beautiful with some amazing flavours (what else is new here?) so I grabbed a strawberry cornet. Let’s just say I could have easily eaten 3 of these 😅
We spent most of our time at the Cosme flagship store (Harajuku), browsing through the lasted Japanese beauty trends, based on the Cosme beauty awards.
We stumbled across a cute little onigiri place (port tomago onigiri) for a late lunch. Each piece is freshly made with spam and other ingredients selected from the menu.
We made our way back to Shinjuku station afterwards as we were keen to check out the shin are range at SHIRO. I first came across this Japanese brand last year in Osaka, and after testing out 3 products I couldn’t wait to come back and try more.

We caught up with some old friends for dinner at Yaikiniku Maruushi for a grilled meat cuisine. It was nice to dine somewhere less busy and hectic than Shinjuku. Our friends are locals so we let them order- eveyrthing was so delicious and reasonably priced for the quality.
After dinner we walked to Roppongi Hills to check out the Keyakizaka illumination. It was a cold night but great way to check out the local area while chatting with friends (and walk their Japanese spitz) enjoying the stunning decorations along the way. Our favourite part was seeing the sparkling lights frame Tokyo Tower.
