  • Icefields Parkway & Columbia Icefield

    10 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ -3 °C

We left Peyto Lake and headed towards Columbia Icefield. We had no reception going forwards so I used AllTrails gps to know where we were and how far away the next walk was. We were thinking about walking to Parker Ridge which was about an hour away.

Along the way to the Columbia Icefield we stopped to take photos of the views surrounding us which were filled with snow capped mountains. We stopped at Mystic River which was a beautiful blue colour and the water looked so fresh. We then stopped at Waterfowl Lake which is fed by glaciers and Mystic River, and it was a beautiful Emerald colour. We crossed over the Saskatchewan River where there was a valley surrounded by mountains. We pulled over at another viewpoint that looked across the valley and we could see the Saskatchewan River. It was getting close to lunch and we were both hungry.

We arrived at the Columbia Icefield Centre and we thought we should walk to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier. We had lunch in the car as we looked over at the glacier before walking towards it. The glacier was all roped off as only if you paid to go on the Columbia Icefield Adventure Bus were you allowed on the glacier. We had decided not to do this as the reviews said you were driven onto the glacier and spent about 5 minutes on it before leaving.

As we walked to the toe there were signs showing where the glacier was in different years as it receded. The glacier now recedes about 5m every year, so it made us wonder if it would even be there in 100 years. We also read about the impacts of the glaciers shrinking as it meant water availability will reduce, and some species of animals that rely on the ice will become threatened.

We walked through the visitor centre and grabbed a coffee from Starbucks before deciding to drive back to the accommodation. It was already after 2pm and we had a 2 hour drive. As we left the Icefields Centre we drove past some goats all standing in the middle of the road! They were licking something on the road, presumably a drink someone had tossed out the window.

On the way back to the accommodation we made many stops on the side of the road to take photos. The views were amazing as we drove past many mountain ranges. We arrived back at the accommodation close to 6pm and headed straight to the spa. When we were at the spa we were asked if we would be seeing the Northern Lights. We weren’t aware they would be around so thought we would take a look later that night. We had pizza for dinner and then I read my book in the evening.

  • Banff Northern Lighta

    10 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

At around 9pm Scott was getting ready for bed when I remembered about the Northern Lights. I told Scott to go outside and have a look. He came inside and said he couldn’t see anything. I checked the Aurora App I have and it said there was a 95% chance of seeing the lights. I was quite excited and quickly put on some warm clothes and we raced to the car.

I quickly googled the best place to see the Northern Lights in Banff and headed towards Lake Minnewanka. As we drove we could see a green glow in the sky, but as there were so many cars leaving the lake I thought we had missed the lights.

As we pulled into the parking lot and found a park, there was a police car escorting cars across the bridge as there were people everywhere. We walked until we found a spot near the jetty where there were no lights. Scott had left the accommodation in his thongs! So I didn’t plan on spending to long in case his feet froze.

We took photos and could see the glow of the lights in the lake. We could see green and red colours in the sky, and the lights were dancing above us. We thought it was pretty special we were able to the northern lights. After over an hour of watching them and taking photos we thought we should head back to the accommodation as we had an early start driving to Lake Moraine in the morning.

As we were leaving the lights had started to fade but they were still dancing. When we arrived back at the accommodation we could now see the lights at the accommodation, and we thought we definitely went out at the right time. We fell asleep close to 11:30pm and had the alarms set for 5:30am.

  • Sentinel Pass & Eiffel Lake

    11 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

We started at 8:30am and headed towards Sentinel Pass. The start of the trail walked through a forest and contained a lot of switchbacks as we zigzagged our way to the top. As we exited the forest we put on our cleats as it was quite icy on the track. We walked towards Larch Valley and we could see the Larch trees that were a beautiful golden colour.

We found a spot for breakfast off the track and quickly ate as it was still freezing. We walked past two lakes and could see the next switchbacks up ahead that we had to walk up in the snow. We continued onwards and started the climb to the top of sentinel pass. We definitely were very happy we had our ice cleats as due to how cold it was it was very icy in sections. We made it to the top and the views were beautiful looking at the mountains surrounding us.

As we rested and had a snack we watched a golden squirrel running around us. I was quite surprised that the squirrel would be this active in the cold weather. After a short break we continued back towards Larch Valley before turning off the track towards Eiffel Lake. The track towards Eiffel Lake walked in the valley of the 10 peaks. It was a relatively flat walk and we didn’t require our ice cleats.

We walked to the end of the trail with a wonderful view of the valley, and glaciers at the top of the peaks. We had our lunch, before continuing back along the trail towards Lake Moraine. As we walked towards Lake Moraine we got a glimpse of the lake and it was a beautiful Emerald colour.

We returned to Lake Moraine and caught the shuttle back to our car. It was close to 5pm so we got in the car and headed back to Banff. As we were getting close to Banff we made sure we stopped at a lookout that had views of Sulfur Mountain, and Vermilion Lakes which we had driven past everyday!

We got back to the accommodation and headed to the hot tub to relax. We then ordered a takeaway pizza before relaxing and having an early night.

  • Lake Moraine Sunrise

    11 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

The alarm went off at 5:20am and we had both had a good sleep although it was definitely too short. We quickly packed our bags and double checked we had our food bag. We were planning on a 20km hike so we definitely did not want to forget anything again! I checked the weather and it was meant to be -6oC in the morning rising to a top of 3oC. I had my thermals on and my thermal jumped bad my fleece jumped underneath my jacket to ensure I was warm enough.

We drove to the Lake Louise Shuttle carpark where we had booked the shuttle for 7am checkin. When we arrived we could still see the Northern Lights faintly dancing in the sky. We thought it was quite amazing that we could still see them! We checked in and hopped on the shuttle. The weather looked like it would be a clear day, so we were hoping the sunrise would be perfect.

It took 30 minutes to arrive at the lake and it was about 20 minutes until sunrise. We quickly walked to the viewpoint on the rockpile and there were people everywhere!
The sky was beautiful will colours of pink and orange above the snow capped mountains. We waited until we could see the sun light up the tops of the mountains. We took lots of photos and then at about 8:30am headed over to the trailhead to start our hike.

  • Banff to Vancouver

    12 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ -2 °C

We woke up at 6:30am and relaxed in bed and had our breakfast. We then packed our bags before checking out of the accommodation at 8am. We had a free tank of fuel included with our rental car so we filled up the tank with 2L which we thought was just enough to get us to Calgary Airport based on what the car said. We then went into Banff and grabbed a coffee before heading towards Calgary.

Our flight was at 12pm and we were due to arrive at the rental drop off at 10am. We were both a bit concerned we hadn’t left ourselves that much time in case of delays. As we drove closer to Calgary the car said we had about a 15km buffer in term of fuel, but suddenly at 50km left to empty the car’s fuel dial went to empty and the car said LOW FUEL. I was panicking as we still had 20km to get to the airport. We were also concerned we didn’t have time to fill up either. We continued on to the airport and thankfully made it to the rental car return!

We dropped off the car and headed into the airport where we checkin with WestJet. We walked around the airport and I bought a book as I had finished my book I brought with me. We then headed to our gate and boarded not long after. Scott had a window seat and we spent most of the flight looking out the window at the Rocky Mountains beneath us.

We arrived in Vancouver at 12:30pm due to the 1 hour time difference, and caught an Uber to our hotel to checkin.

  • Granville Island Market

    12 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After we checked into our hotel we decided we would go to Granville Island Market. It was about a 25 minute walk to the ferry which was located near Sunset Beach Park. It was $7 return so we paid for our tickets and a little boat took us over. We could have walked but we thought it would be fun to catch the ferry over.

We arrived at Granville Island and found the information area, and the lady explained that there were food markets, shops and an art and artisan area. We walked around the food markets and tried some chair tea and I also bought one as it was so delicious. Scott bought some chai tea to take home as well. We also bought a match scone to try which was gluten free. We then walked around the art galleries and through the various shops. We found a lady who sold Maple Syrup so we bought some Dark Maple Syrup for gifts and to take home with us. The owner explained that the dark maple syrup is made towards the end of the season and is not found outside of Canada.

We continued to walk around the island, before returning on the ferry at 6pm. We walked back to the accommodation and to a Candy Store hoping to find some cheap maple lollies. Unfortunately they were sold out so we headed to a gift store to buy some. Wendy had requested I bring some back for the office so I made sure I bought some!

We had looked at the different restaurants around us and decided to go to Spicy 6 an Indian Restaurant with positive reviews. We ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh and a Paneer dish with rice and Gluten Free Roti bread. The food was delicious and we were so full. We took home the leftovers to have for lunch the next day. We then headed back to the accommodation and relaxed before falling asleep.

  • Grouse Mountain & Stanley Park

    13 Oktober 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We slept in this morning and woke up at 8:30am. We had decided to go to Grouse Mountain and we would hike up as it was about 3km to the top of the mountain. We walked to the Safeway and bought some yoghurt smoothies for breakfast and a few snacks to get us through the day. We then caught an Uber to Grouse Mountain which was about 20 minutes away. The Uber driver said he was also walking up Grouse Mountain, I thought that was a pretty good deal for him getting paid to drive somewhere!

We arrived at Grouse Mountain and paid for our tickets to go down the Gondola which was $20 each as opposed to $80 both ways. The person said all the activities at the top of the mountain were free which we wanted to walk to. We found the start of the BCMC trail and started walking. As we were walking I noticed signs saying 1/50, then 2/50…, I realised this was to mark how far up the mountain had climbed. The climb was very steep and included lots of stairs. We were quite exhausted going up the mountain and stopped for a snack and a rest before continuing. As we were walking through a forest as well there were no views, just the steep sides of the mountain below us.

We continued on our way and finally made it to the top. It took us 1 hour and 57 minutes to make it to the top. The information board did say it usually takes 2 – 2.5 hours, so we were happy to have made it to the top under the 2 hour mark. There were a number of people that clearly do this climb for fitness and even a timer at the top to measure your time. We sat in the café and ordered a drink each while we ate our lunch. The views over Vancouver were beautiful, and a sign said on a clear day you can see as far as 80km.

After lunch we walked towards where the Grizzly Bears are kept. Grouse Mountain has two Grizzly Bears named Grinder and Coola.

Grinder was discovered in 2001 near Invermere, wandering alone and in poor condition. Weighing only 4.5 kg at the time, he was dehydrated and weak. Despite his smaller size, Grinder has established himself as the dominant bear in their habitat.

Coola, also found in 2001, was orphaned after his mother was killed by a vehicle near Bella Coola. He had two siblings, one which died and another which ran away and was never found again.

Both bears were brought to Grouse Mountain because there were no existing rehabilitation programs for grizzly cubs in British Columbia at that time. They now inhabit a spacious 5.5-acre natural habitat where they can engage in behaviours typical of wild bears while being protected from threats.

We stood and took photos of both the bears and watched as they were fed their lunch. We also walked past their “Den” which was an enclosure built for them when they enter hibernation. After visiting the bears, we headed back to the Gondola and waited until it was time for us to head down. There are only two Gondola’s that operate, and they can fit 100 people inside them. We crammed into the Gondola and took it back down to the carpark.

We then caught an Uber to Stanley Park where Scott had seen that we could walk along the Seawall back to the accommodation which was about 6km. The walking path was busy with people walking and cycling. As we walked towards the city, we could see the mountains in the distance and Grouse Mountain, surrounded by a port with cargo ships. We walked past the Brockton Point Lighthouse and the Nine O’clock Gun which is a historical cannon that fires every night at 9pm. We continued along the track before walking through Coal Harbour and heading back to the accommodation. We bought a few snacks to make a cheese board and some Aperol Spritz to have back at the accommodation for dinner. We tidied up the hotel room and packed up our things as we were both departing in the morning.
