  • Karnak Temples

    May 24, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Another early start to beat the heat (41 forecast) and the crowds. We explored the vast houses of the gods, Karnak temples, built over a period of some 200 years over 3500 years ago!! Even more amazing than the huge columns, statues, and temples is the reconstruction that is continuing today. Back at the cruise ship for lunch and a refreshing swim in the sundeck pool.Read more

    May 27, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

We continued on from the Valley of the Kings to the Valley of the Queens with its most striking tomb, that of Queen Nefertari. This tomb is noted as one on the finest in Egypt. Nefertari was the favourite wife of Rameses ll. We visited other tombs belonging to sons of Rameses lll and Queen Titi, all with beautifully preserved reliefs and paintings. On the way back to Luxor we stopped by an alabaster workshop where we were treated to a demonstration by the craftsmen accompanied by them singing!Read more

  • Return to Cairo

    May 27, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

On the final day of the Egyptian leg of our trip, we visited the Khan Al Khalili, a medieval market built in the 14th century where you can buy just about anything. After a lunch of savoury and sweet fettir (stuffed pizza) at a local café, we poked around the market -- here, bargaining is a must! Mudi, our guide, brought us to the oldest coffee shop in the market, called El Fisharwy, started in the 1700s where we had tea Egyptian style, with mint!

Before returning to our hotel, we were able to visit Al Azahar, one of Cairo's earliest mosques founded in 970.
Students of the school/university in the mosque were practicing for a competition that would see them reciting the memorized Koran, the holy book for Muslims.

  • South to Wadi Rum

    May 29, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After a long drive south, we arrived in Wadi Rum, a Protected Area, a valley known for its rock formations, sand dunes, and natural arches. This area is also famous for its link to Lawrence of Arabia and as the location for the movies The Martian, Dune, Star Wars, and Aladdin. While the local Bedouin live in villages today, they operate the various camps that enable visitors to experience the magic of the desert while bringing income to the area. There was a heavy rain and flash flooding in the area yesterday so access to Wadi Rum had been closed. On the way to the camp, we visited rock formations and walked barefoot in sand dunes. After watching the sun set on the valley, we were treated to a beautiful meal cooked by our Bedouin hosts. The stars overhead were brilliant!Read more

  • Floating in the Red Sea, Aqaba

    May 30, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

From Wadi Rum, we drove to Aqaba on the Red Sea. This small city is part of 20 kms of shoreline Saudi Arabia gave to Jordan. You could see Isreal across the sea and, at one point in our trip, Egypt. There, we boarded the Blue Wave for an amazing snorkeling experience. The water was calm and warm, and the reef was full of colourful fish. It was like swimming in an aquarium!Read more

  • Petra ll

    June 1, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today, we were all looking forward to our visit to the main Petra site with its elaborate architecture carved out of the cliffs. Built by the Nabateans around 300 BC, about 30,000 people lived there in its heyday. Then the Bedouin lived there until it was re-discovered in 1812. We walked through the Siq, a narrow passage through high cliffs, which opened up at the Treasury, one of the most famous facades at Petra. With so much to visit, we headed first to the Monastery, a Nabatean tomb that is much bigger than the Treasury, reached by climbing the ancient path of nearly 1000 steps (in 34 degree heat!). Alternative means of transport (animals) were available, but we used our feet. Vicki measured: we had walked 14.2 kms for the day!!Read more

  • The Last Hurrah at a Dead Sea Spa

    June 3, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

The last stop on our tour was a visit at a Dead Sea spa. The Dead Sea is at the lowest point on earth (425 meters below sea level) and has such high salinity that only a few microscopic organisms can live in. We floated and then slathered ourselves with mud that had all sorts of healing properties! It was a rejuvenating conclusion to the Jordan leg of our trip.Read more
