    From Rain to Rock!

    8 Jun, Australia ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Greeted by a drizzly, cold 🥶 and wet 🌧️ morning in Melbourne, waiting for the Skybus to the airport. A tad excited because a $65 bid for a business class upgrade with Virgin was granted so I’m off to luxuriate in the airport lounge before the flight ✈️

Not the glittery star 🌟 I thought it might be but perfect to recline & relax pre-boarding. The cute mini muffins reminiscent of the destination…

Onboard, felt privileged to have one of only 8 Business Class seats: wide and comfortable. Sparkling 🍾 served and my jacket hung behind my chair. Settled in for the 2.5 hours through to one of my bucket 🪣 list destinations: Uluru & the Red Centre of our Great Southern Land! 🏜️

Awe inspiring view coming into Uluru seeing the Rock for the first time! We saw the Olgas from the plane as well. It is hard to believe we are actually here. The red earth is so ‘electric’ and magnificent.

The Resort is fairly basic and uninspiring but will do the job. I unpacked & jumped straight in the pool. It was ice 🧊 cold 🥶
My vision of whiling away the hours one afternoon in it will definitely not be happening.

I stumbled upon the Lookout point for witnessing Ayres Rock at sunset 🌅 It was absolutely breathtaking to watch the colours change before our eyes! Photos cannot truly capture the beauty of this moment. It also went from 20° down to 10° in a matter of minutes.

Rounding off our day, we went to the Ilkari buffet Restaurant at the main Sails Resort and devoured delicious morsels, including succulent seafood, tender kangaroo 🦘 yummy lamb 🐑 chops & sweet desserts 🍨 until we were in our food coma; rolling back to our rooms at The Lost Camel 🐪 Hotel.

  • Kings Canyon on the King’s Birthday

    9 Jun, Australia ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

My Buffet Belly made for a restless nights sleep so 6am alarm ⏰ to head over for the Uluru sunrise 🌅 by 7.28am was a rude awakening, but, worth it in the end. With the ABBA Voyage Sunrise and sky scape with turquoise & pink hues we watched with admiration & joy.

I was surprised during the 3 hour road trip to see that there was much more vegetation covering the red dirt than I anticipated. We stopped off at the famous quirky landmark dunny in Curtain Springs which was also nearby the ‘imposter’ Ayres Rock known as Mt. Conner, often mistaken for its’ more famous ‘sister’ so humorously called ‘Fooluru’ 😉

We tackled the two hour walk up to the South Rim at Kings Canyon, remembering the three famous Drag Queens who coined the phrase “…just what this country needs; cock in frock on rock…” Marvelling in awe of the rich red, rugged & rocky landscape contrasted with 360 million year old limestone cliffs and wildflowers that seem to surround & hug each corner and crevice & survive so amazingly in the harsh climatic conditions.

But it would be the last stop of the day that really made us go WOW! We arrived at the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) just before sunset to witness the most breathtaking and jaw-dropping natural experience of this magnificent set of nature’s monoliths.

  • Sensational Segway Sunrise 🌅

    10 Jun, Australia ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

Sprang outta bed at 5am: 3 degrees 🥶
Weaving along pitch black roads as the sun began to rise… painting the horizon with a burnt orange light promising a magical sunrise over Uluru.

Gliding around the base of Uluru on a Segway was pure joy — like floating along a silent conveyor belt, effortlessly rolling through red dust and ancient stories. The tour made it easy to soak in the scale and spirit of the rock without the strain of walking, letting the breeze brush past as we cruised quietly from site to site. We paused at the visible “scar” where people once climbed the rock — now a fading reminder of a practice that’s no longer allowed out of deep respect for Anangu law. Along the way, we passed many sacred areas where photos were not permitted, honouring the wishes of the Traditional Owners and reminding us that some stories are not ours to share, only to witness.

Such a fun and beautiful way to spend a memorable moment in time! If only I could be on holiday every day!

  • Field of Light Dinner ✨

    10 Jun, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Our final evening in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre was nothing short of magical. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we were welcomed with sparkling wine and delicate canapés, the desert breeze warm and then chilly around us. The setting: tables beneath a canopy of stars, felt like something from a dream. With each course of our three-course dinner, the flavours deepened our appreciation of the land: locally inspired dishes paired beautifully with Australian wines. Laughter and easy conversation flowed, with Jason, Chrys and Susan soaking in every moment of this special night.

After dinner, under the glow of a full moon, we wandered through the mesmerising Field of Light. Thousands of tiny lights pulsed softly across the desert floor, like stars that had fallen to earth. The stillness of the landscape, the gentle rhythm of light, and the quiet companionship made it a truly unforgettable experience. It was the perfect end to our journey—a celebration of friendship, nature, and the timeless beauty of the Red Centre.
