    Mahaweli River

    This is the longest river in Sri Lanka and is 335 km long and originates in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, specifically from the Horton Plains near Kirigalpoththa, and flows through diverse landscapes including mountains, valleys, and low-lying plains before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

    Pussellawa

    Pussellawa is halfway between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

    Pussellawa is home to several religious sites, including the Holy Trinity Church, Sri Kathirvelayutha Swami Kovil Murugan Temple, and Holy Trinity. These sites are significant to the local population, particularly the Tamil community, who have a rich cultural heritage and have settled in the tea-growing areas of Sri Lanka's central highlands. The Holy Trinity Church, built in 1859 by Europeans who were tea planters, The Sri Kathirvelayutha Swami Kovil Murugan Temple, originally built in the 1880s, reflects the Tamil influence in the region. The Holy Trinity, established in 1976, serves over 100 children from various religious faiths in Sri Lanka. These religious sites not only provide a place of worship but also contribute to the cultural and historical fabric of Pussellawa.Baca selengkapnya

    Tea Plantation

    Labookellie Estate, founded in 1870 and is the oldest tea plantation in Nuwara Eliya. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most historic and influential tea plantations, known for pioneering high grown tea cultivation and producing premium Ceylon Tea. Its early development, including some of the country’s oldest tea bushes, helped shape Sri Lanka’s tea industry.

    After nationalization and later privatization, the estate entered a modern era adopted advanced technology, sustainable farming and strong community programs for its workforce.

    Today, Labookellie is both a cultural landmark and a tourism hub through its Tea Centre, while continuing to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s tea exports and global Ceylon Tea identity.

    Tea Process

    Tea Plucking: Freshly plucked leaves are used for black tea production, as they are healthier and fresher.
    Withering: The leaves are spread across trays and cooled to remove moisture.
    Rolling: The leaves are twisted and rolled to release natural juices and flavor.
    Firing: The rolled leaves are exposed to cool mountain air to oxidize and develop flavor.

    Nuwara Eliya

    Nuwara Eliya is a city in the hill country of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. Its name means "city on the plain" or "city of light". The city has very picturesque landscape and temperate climate. It is at an altitude of 1,868 m and is considered to be the most important location for tea production in Sri Lanka. The city is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is known for its temperate, cool climate – the coolest area in Sri Lanka.

    The city was founded by Samuel Baker, the explorer of Lake Albert and the upper Nile in 1846. Nuwara Eliya's climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, called Little England, was a hill country retreat where the British colonialists could immerse themselves in their pastimes such as fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf and cricket.

    We were planning on walking around Gregory Park, however due to the rain, we drove along the edge. It looked like a beautiful park and a shame we could not do this activity. Gregory Park was named after Sir William Gregory in 1873 the park is used for water sports and recreational activities.    Baca selengkapnya

    High Tea at the Grand

    Today was about being in an English Village but in Sri Lanka. So to enhance our experience, a High Tea was a must.

    The High Tea is probably the best we have ever had. Service was impeccable, the food was delicious. The waiter even understood one of John's dad jokes. Even had a violinist playing background music.Baca selengkapnya

    Nine Arch Bridge

    The bridge is a famous colonial era railway viaduct known for its architecture in a jungle setting. The bridge was designed to accommodate a nine degree curve and steep gradient. It was built by local labor under British supervision. The bridge was completed in 1919.

    Nine Arch Bridge

    The Nine Arch Bridge a century old viaduct built between 1919–1921 using only brick, stone, and cement due to the steel shortages from World War I. Its nine arches stretch across the lush valley. The bridge’s construction relied on local engineer D. J. Wimalasurendra’s design, Kandyan stonemasons, and even elephants for transport, resulting in a structure that has endured harsh mountain weather for over 100 years.

    Local folklore enriches its story, from monks meditating at the site to villagers working by lamplight. Its Sinhalese name, Ahas Namaye Palama (“Nine Skies Bridge”), reflects how each arch frames the sky.    Baca selengkapnya
