    Kimba

    Apr 8–9 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Drove through Ceduna, stopping for a grocery shop after the quarantine. We headed out to Baldies Seafoods to grab some huge fresh oysters, a must when in this part of the world. Stopped for lunch in Poochera. I marvelled at the shanty house made out of flattened kerosene tins in 1920. It must have been like an oven in summer. Stopped for the night in Kimba, along with lots of others, at the free RV stop around the Rec Ground. The facilities are first class.Read more

  • Port Germein

    April 9 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Stopped in for lunch. We were last here in 1990 and the town was nearly dead. It's quite prosperous now. We bought Bahn mi at a great Vietnamese roadside stall/cafe and ate down near the jetty. The jetty claims to be the longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere but Busselton has a longer one.Read more

  • Yacka

    Apr 9–10 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Overnight stay in a community RV park. $20 powered with hot showers is a bargain. Some delightful old stone buildings around town and a printed guide to a historical walk is available in the main street.Read more

  • Mannum

    April 10 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Drove south today through Clare, Auburn, Nooriopta, Angaston. Lunch in Mannum. The paddle steamers evoke visions of past glories for one of the busiest of Murray River ports.

  • Coonalpyn

    Apr 10–11 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Overnight behind the Coonalpyn Hotel. They have room for around eight vans in return for eating or drinking in the pub. Nice and secure. We had a meal and drink with Wayne and Lou, a couple from Geelong on their way to support Hawthorn as part of SA's Gather Round of AFL. They were leaving their van at the pub and staying another night on the way back. Good pub, good prices, good food.l, good company.Read more

  • Penola

    Apr 11–13 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

We spent a couple of nights in lovely Penola, heart of the Coonawarra wine district. The weather kept up the overcast and rainy conditions but we got out and enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting at Wynn's Coonawarra and a trip back to Naracoorte for the cavesRead more

  • Naracoorte

    April 12 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We took a day trip from Penola back to Naracoorte, starting with the end extensive cave system. The came entrances are often just a small hole in the ground and over the last 500,000 years or so many animals have been trapped within. The caves have provided paleontologists with a complete timeline of Australia's mega fauna. We saw skeletons of giant kangaroos, marsupial lions, thylacines, Tasmanian devils and much more. As always, the cave formations were beautiful.
We did a quick tour of Naracoorte, a pretty town with a great range of shops and facilities. A feature was the swimming lake, a large artificial lake built in the 1950s as a swimming area, complete with white sand beach.

  • Hamilton

    April 13 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We left Penola and crossed the border into Victoria. This was marked by an immediate deterioration of the road surface. We bumped and jolted our way through Casterton and Coleraine, stopping in Hamilton to tour the Sir Reg Ansett Museum. Hamilton was the base for Reg's first air service using a 6 passenger Fokker in the 1930s. The history of Ansett Air was on display and we were quite enthralled, the displays evoking many memories.Read more

  • Geelong

    Apr 14–18 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We spent four nights at the Geelong Caravan Park on the banks of the Baron River and just down the road from the Cat's stadium. The traffic in Geelong is very heavy but everyone seems to drive sensibly. With the city being mostly rectangular grid streets, traffic lights are frequent and progress steady. One night, the nearby oil refinery had a serious fire and we were on a " watch and act". However, we slept through the whole thing.Read more

  • Queenscliff-Sorrento-Mt Eliza

    April 16 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

We drove to Queenscliff to catch the car ferry to Sorrento and drive to see friends in Mt Eliza. In hindsight, it was a similar cost to driving, given the tolls, but a train might have been better. The ferry is very efficient and comfortable but at $200 the round trip a tad expensive. We loved catching up with Az, Mike and Everley again.Read more
