Shark Valley - Everglades National Park

    27 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

My first stop on the way to the Everglades. Shark Valley has a 15 mile loop trail that you can bike or take a tram - I choose to bike it. There is also 2 small trails not far from the start so I decided to hit those first on foot and come back for my bike. Had my camera and saw about 3 gators on the short 1 mile walk - one a baby one swimming around. After the hike came and got my bike and biked out 7.5 miles to thee observations tower which gave incredible views of the area at the top. The highlight was a small .5 out and back trail before the observation tower. I starting walking down a narrow dirt path with water on one side came around a turn and ran right into a crocodile. Did not even realize it at first, thought it was a gator, took pics and headed down trail, told someone about it up ahead and they said they saw it and that it was a croc. When i came back took a better look and it was as you can tell by the skinny nose. Was a great start with tons of wildlife to seeEn savoir plus

  • Flamingo Campground

    27 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

The campground is at the far southern part of the Everglades and you have to drive all the way to homestead to get to the road to take you there. Was a long day of driving and then exploring at Shark Valley so just headed to campground to setup camp before Dark. Got their around 5:00 so had about 3 hours. Set up camp and then went exploring around the campground on the bike. Brought plenty of Mosquito repellent and strong stuff but the mosquitoes, no seeums and flies were bad around the campground, always buzzing around you. If you were on the road or outside the campground wasn't to bad. After exploring and planning out tomorrow went back and made dinner, read a book for a bit until sun set then into the tent to avoid bugs and read some more until i fell asleep.En savoir plus

  • Hells Bay Canoe Trail

    28 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Definitely wanted to kayak when i was down here so saw this trail when researching and people said it was pretty well marked through mangroves. Was just off the side of the main road. Was surprised to see another jeep on the side of the entrance when i got there which meant someone else was out there. Ended up seeing a couple in two kayaks about 2 miles in. Was a little nerve wracking at first as it is very narrow kayak through mangroves and grass. Wasn't sure what i would do if i came right up to a gator on the side. They don't really bother me as they are pretty docile but it is mating season and if you came upon a nest with a mother guarding then its a different story. Did see a couple small ones in more open water areas but was pretty good distance from them. Ended up going out about 3.5 miles before turning around. It was a nice peaceful, easy paddle though and really enjoyed it. Would have liked to see a little more wildlife. There was a area by the campground that they said had manatees sometimes and crocs but i hadn't planned for tat one or researched the path so didn't want to do that one.En savoir plus

  • Anhinga Trail

    28 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

After finishing kayaking, loaded up and headed to do some more hiking. This trail and Gumbo Limbo trail are in the Royal Palm section of the park. Is a short trails but beautiful views along a boardwalk along the everglades. Saw tons of birds and a couple more gators. The Anihinga trail is out in the open so was getting pretty hot, the other smaller trail is shaded so was a little coolerEn savoir plus

  • Robert is Here

    28 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Had gone by this place on the way in yesterday and was packed and looked pretty cool. Was basically a roadside fruit stand but they had smoothies and shakes and a small petting/feeding zoo out back with various animals. Was pretty neat little place. Ended up getting the Pineapple/Mango/Strawberry smoothie and was delicious!En savoir plus

  • Schnebly Redland's Winery & Brewery

    28 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Ended my day with some drinks before heading back to campground for the night. Saw the sign for this yesterday also as driving in. Was a nice place, had a winery building on one side, a beautiful outdoor patio, then a restaurant with outdoor seating that had live music - which was also adjacent to the patio. Then on the other side was another building that had the Miami brewery. That is where i went and had a coconut porter and a mango habanero beer, both were great!En savoir plus
