RI to Chesapeake

Left Montauk, heading to Pt Judith. Beautiful sailing day, winds light to begin but they picked up nicely. At 4 pm we heard a report from the Coast Guard of two kayakers in the water. The coordinates were only about a mile away. We responded to the Coast Guard we were close and headed in that direction. Andy kept a sharp lookout and saw a red kayak off the bow so we approached, reporting the visual to the Coast Guard. One kayaker was fine and had been on his cell with the Coast Guard. The other kayak was swamped with another fellow in it. A small power boat overheard us on the radio and had headed in our direction. The Coast Guard announced they were also approaching. As it was easier for the powerboat to get the kayaker onboard they helped out until the CG boat was on scene. Both fellows boarded the CG boat safely with their kayaks as we held position. We actually got a commendation from the Coast Guard thanking us for our help! We don't normally hear that on the radio so we were pleasantly surprised.

Continued on our way into the Harbor of Refuge and up to Salt Pond where we picked up a friend's mooring. After dinner we enjoyed 360 degrees of fireworks. 39 milesLæs mere
